Royal Anchor - AF (6th Mar 2025 - 16:57:37) Is the Royal Anchor closing for a renovation and conversion to a Hotel and although still owned by Greene King will NOT be a hungry horse.

Trump W.Anchor Towers With an enormous golden phallus outside what will be a 200 storey 5 star hotel resort with Hungry horse providing the cuisine.

Re: Royal Anchor - Local (7th Mar 2025 - 10:29:07) All joking aside it’s such a shame it’s got to this stage. It used to be a great place to go to for a cheap and cheerful meal and chat to all the other locals can remember you had to wait your turn to order food and beer it was that busy. We need a place between all the others we have great pubs locally good food and drinks but we need something in between. Hopefully green king can come good and get it running again.

Re: Royal Anchor - Sam (9th Mar 2025 - 18:46:45) I also heard it will be a sports bar, however it could also be completely closed down and demolished for flats etc as the cost of repairing the fly trap dirty sticky floors combined with removal of the 5000 microwave ovens could well be too high.

Re: Royal Anchor - AR (9th Mar 2025 - 19:36:15) Sam That is probably one of the most saddest posts I have seen. That building has stood for hundreds of years. It has fed and made people happy for as long as I can remember, and countless others in the past. It has given employment to many people, and I briefly had a second job there in the early 80's working behind the bar. My family enjoyed many a meal here years ago when they were growing up, and I have continued over the years to go there. The Bohunt children are taught the history, and we should be proud of it. It saddens me to see this and why have the council not stepped in to do something ? Get a decent firm to run it. If this building goes, the Liphook we knew goes too.

We have not been given any definite details and we have no official dates of when the refurb will happen. However, what we do know is that it will be more of a Sports bar focused pub and no longer a hungry horse but still greene king owned.

Re: Royal Anchor - Joe (30th Apr 2025 - 12:26:04) I think it is one long bar usually focusing on selling lagers and not serving anything but light snacks, burgers sandwiches etc and huge sports screens everywhere and pool tables - not food orientated.

Always packed and should book my point is something like that would go a bomb in liphook a carvery would suit that location. The Toby carvery’s all over the country are very good we don’t have any around here an opening I would say . Think green king needs to do some homework.

Re: Royal Anchor - M (1st May 2025 - 08:14:34) I stayed overnight at a Greene King Pub/Inn in Cheadle recently and it was clean, good value for money and reasonable quality food. It shows Greene King can do it but for some reason they're not too interested in doing it in Liphook. The Royal Anchor is a Grade 2 building so imagine that causes issues for them with regards what they can do and how much it costs to improve the building. Such a shame that Greene King have let the building deteriorate to such an extent that they can no longer use the upper floors as a hotel. I can see a "Sports Bar" being much different to what they have now. Will it mean they will no longer be serving food?

Re: Royal Anchor - M (1st May 2025 - 11:16:46) @Rg Farmhouse inns is owned by Greene King. I too have stayed in one of their hotels once while away on business, and it was good. Very similar formula to a JD Wetherspoon hotel. A pity that they don't appear to want to invest in the Anchor but that's the pub game they rarely want to put anything in, Greene King in particular are known for letting buildings fall into disrepair and just about ripping out any profit. Doesn't reflect well on the village if they believe a " sports bar" will do well!

Re: Royal Anchor - paul earwicker (1st May 2025 - 13:20:33) Hi, Any "theme" or general refurbishment, would be an improvement to our central pub in our village. On my visits it has been quiet, little or no atmosphere. People, and families, wanting a cheap dining out experience, (nothing wrong with that). It comes at a cost, what can be served economically, to their business model. The drinks served at the bar are good, and reasonably priced, compared to other pubs in to area. The staff are helpful and polite I wish The Royal Anchor every success now, and for future generations.

Re: Royal Anchor - Russ (1st May 2025 - 14:32:20) As for carvery we sometimes go to a Fishbourne pub, fantastic carvery no queueing, you have a bleeper when it’s your turn. And the food is great. The Woolpack Inn That’s what would be good in the Anchor plenty of room for everything bar for sports enthusiasts away from the food area. Green King could make it so appealing the place to go. Walking distance for many.
