Did you inform the police? They were perhaps stealing wood.
However, we had this happen on the nature reserve in Bordon and it turned out that they had sawn through the memorial bench.

Not that I am doubting you but is that near the railway line? The track maintenance people always do maintenance of that kind in the middle of the night.

From Facebook

It was tree felling along the A3 (right outside where we live 🫠) 2-3 chainsaws and a wood chipper that started at midnight near the bridge towards Bordon and they made their way along over the next 3.5 hours. Absolutely shattered today!
Filed two noise complaints as we received zero warning it was going to happen.

Dave are you new to the village?

We do not speak about the goings on down in the woods at night, you must forget all about it, it would only have been the sound of the wind or perhaps the lorries speeding by on the village bypass you heard, or maybe some of the villagers gathered to chop wood..but you must forget all about it!

Nicely spotted Ed, Thanks. I heard it too and investigated. Must've been the same thing.
Nice to get the answer.
