McDonalds on A3
- M (19th Jan 2022 - 18:51:50)

Looks like Liphook Services Northbound will be getting a McDonalds restaurant according to the latest EHDC planning portal.
A bit more litter to add to the existing on the A3 and Liphook roads?

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Liphookfattyman (19th Jan 2022 - 20:05:41)

Sounds awesome

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (20th Jan 2022 - 10:52:31)

This has made me so sad. The litter on the roads is already dreadful and this will undoubtedly make it worse. :-(

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Paul Robinson (20th Jan 2022 - 11:08:11)

Since much of the McDonald's litter scattered alongside the roads in Liphook must have originated from the Petersfield branch.

It therefor stands to reason that the A3 Services site will result in litter along the roadside in the run up to Grayshott and the tunnel. This will of course depend on how long it takes to wolf down the burgers prior to ejecting the wrapping from the car windows.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- er (20th Jan 2022 - 11:37:20)

Can you link to the application? I think it's the way forward for Liphook Metro Central, a multiplex cinema perhaps too, there's lots of empty green stuff round here, especially by the A3, I've always thought it's a proper place for a one of those really nice retail trading estates with discount clothing stores, restaurant chains, bowling alley, perhaps some flats and a cheap hotel, would put us on the urban map nicely and avoid our better class of chavs having to travel to that rough town of Bordon for a night out, we've got a train station too, their eco town doesn't ha, don't think much of theirs!!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Pete (20th Jan 2022 - 11:43:41)

Ooooh hope this goes ahead, it might speed up the evolutionary natural selection process and reduce the population a bit. 🍔🍟.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (20th Jan 2022 - 14:02:31)

er - I can't understand why you seem to want Liphook to develop into a thriving metropolis? I moved here specifically because I want to live in a quiet , rural village with no takeaways/ bowling alleys etc (and I'm in my 30s so I'm not a retiree). If I wanted more to do, I would have stayed in Guildford or gone to London!

More facilities = more traffic, more litter, more congestion! If that's what you're after, why live here?

Re: McDonalds on A3
- RC (20th Jan 2022 - 21:43:10)

Is this planning application a done deal? Most people will not be aware of just how much roadside trash comes from McD’s.
As a litter picker my guess is about 10-15%. I know most people are not irresponsible litter chuckers but we don’t need more trash. The Highways Agency are meant to be in charge of roadside litter clearance but in 18 years of living here I’ve not seen them once. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Anyone got any suggestions that we could put to McD’s to find a way to start to reduce this environmental nightmare eg no more polystyrene boxes or making the company responsible for all roadside litter within 500 yards of their outlet??
Enjoy your burgers by all means but TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- AF (21st Jan 2022 - 02:07:03)

I'm all for it and am sure i will be making use of this new outlet, alot closer than Petersfield.

As for the litter, there are some idiots about who just chuck things out of the window but it's hardly McD's fault.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (21st Jan 2022 - 08:39:29)

AF - I'm not saying it's McDonalds fault. But irrelevant - the litter will get worse. Completely and utterly depressing.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Paul (21st Jan 2022 - 22:42:32)

Hi,
Mcdonalds new McPlant vegan burger is really tasty.
Sesame Bun, Plant Based Burger, Lettuce (iceberg), Tomato Slice, Tomato Ketchup, Vegan Sandwich Sauce, Vegan Cheese alternative, Dill Pickle Slices, Onions, and Mustard. Whats not to like...

Re: McDonalds on A3
- g (21st Jan 2022 - 23:56:59)

Methinks I can do without the Emulsifiers (mono- Diacetyl Tartaric acid, Esters of Mono-diacetyl of Fatty acids) Calcium propionate, ascorbic acid, Methyl cellulose, Potassium Chloride, Sunflower lecithin, Maltodextrin, glucose fructose syrup, Xantham Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sorbic acid, Carrageenan and Calcium Chloride, to mention just a few ingredients...:-)

original poster:

mcdonalds means:

jobs
another place to eat in liphook

whilst i accept that it could mean litter on the A3. i don't see how that ilitter s going to get from the A3 to the square etc.

it's very positive

i think it's fablulous news

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline Hutt (22nd Jan 2022 - 09:50:28)

Gareth - it will, trust me. People will eat whilst driving and throw the packaging out the window driving through our lovely village.

Also, I would rather eat dry Ryvita than the absolute garbage that McDonald’s sells.

Making me sad that clearly so many people clearly prize a cheap greasy fast food meal over the litter epidemic blighting our country.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- M (22nd Jan 2022 - 10:01:42)

@ Gareth
How does the existing McDonalds/Costa/KFC etc litter get onto Liphook roads and pavements now, when the closest McD's is in Petersfield?
We all know it's the selfish, inconsiderate people (predominately younger but not exclusively) who throw it out of their cars or drop it as they walk.
I'm very happy to take a bet that in a years time there will be much more McD's litter on Liphook streets (especially the London Road Layby) than there is now.
A sign of progress some would say? Is it progress everyone wants? a snapshot of this thread appears to say no but there will be no stopping it unfortunately.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- gareth j rees (22nd Jan 2022 - 12:49:03)

you're both wrong

there will be no litter impact to the village after having a mcdonalds on the A3

and you don't have to eat big macs at mcdonalds there are loads of healthy options

my kids eat nothing and are terrible eater

but they love a mcdonalds

just the usual luddite, elderly moaning on here

if you did a poll in liphook the vast majority would be supportive of mcdonalds coming to liphook

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline Hutt (22nd Jan 2022 - 15:32:39)

We’ll see Gareth. I remain firmly convinced otherwise

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline Hutt (22nd Jan 2022 - 15:34:49)

Also. I’m in my 30s. Hardly elderly!!!!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Joe (22nd Jan 2022 - 15:47:07)

Apart from the side salad carrot sticks or pineapple wedge there is nothing healthy on the Mac Donald’s menu. The veggie and vegan options are deep fried and then put into a wrap or burger bun. Fried anything is not healthy.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Iwik61 (22nd Jan 2022 - 16:04:47)

Easiest way to deal with this is a barcode on all wrappers ,tells what time the product was sold time and date.Barcode is then scanned to get address of buyer.

Bit big brother but only easy way litter could be dealt with.
Won't happen coz of all the Karen's and data protection I feel.
Nice thought though.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- gareth j rees (22nd Jan 2022 - 16:10:27)

still not sure why mcdonalds provokes such visceral reactions

especially from caroline

as clearly she lives in tatooine

Re: McDonalds on A3
- I (22nd Jan 2022 - 18:12:15)

Just ignore Gareth, has a history of resenting the older generations. Still McD’s will be able to keep him well supplied with those chips for his shoulder

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Jen (22nd Jan 2022 - 18:30:16)

Arrgh! Is there no escape from the dreaded golden arches?

I'm not keen on McDonald's, so only tend to eat there when travelling or out somewhere where it's the only option. However I know that lots of people, mainly youngsters, who love it and would be thrilled to have one nearby.

I don't think it does much harm for people to eat junk food, providing it's only occasionally (perhaps once every couple of months). But I agree, the potential for increase in the volume of litter in the village and alongside the A3 is a cause for concern.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- er (22nd Jan 2022 - 19:27:50)

Caroline, totally get your point, but fact is we have grown from the Liphook I first knew when I first came here, where everybody knew everybody, not just the other members in their Aromatherapy Vegan Buddhist Dance Group, but on the street too, the supermarket was actually in the Square, the petrol station attendant filled your tank up with a smile, on the station platform everybody huddled around in one big group, saying 'ooh how's your grandmother, I haven't seen her for days!' and offering you home made scones!

We are growing fast and it's unsaid, underhanded, but we are marked for massive growth. I don't want the kids growing up in the same bland suburbia I did, with no facilities, Liphook is rapidly becoming Feltham or Staines!

McDonalds isn't good for you on a regular basis, but nor is suburbia. Let's think big now, we have nothing to lose!

RC, McDonalds don't use polystyrene anymore, it's all cardboard, including the straws and burgers:)

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Paul (22nd Jan 2022 - 19:48:11)

Hi,
Don't see what all this fuss is about over litter from a new McDonald's.
The location is geographically Liphook and postcode, but at the A3 Northbound. It is not in our village, and most people using the facility will be heading up the by-pass not even knowing or seeing our living area.
Highways Engand are responsible for litter collection on the A road.
Also as required by local council, McDonald's staff will take action for rubbish in their own area.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Jen (23rd Jan 2022 - 13:22:03)

@Paul - I disagree. I think most people using the new McDonald's won't be people who are en route to somewhere else, they will be local people! They'll be driving down Longmoor Road to the Griggs Green junction onto the A3, popping into the McDonald's Drive-thru, then driving up the A3 and turning off at the Liphook exit.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- D (23rd Jan 2022 - 14:08:55)

I agree with er, we must get away from this ideology of Liphook being a quaint little village where we all know each other, that disappeared decades ago. Village life is long gone though there are quite a few Village People around here now. Oops!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- er (23rd Jan 2022 - 14:32:53)

Good points, the Petersfield one is a mere 10 minutes drive away, so why do we need another drive through on the Liphook bypass?

Clearly it's not for Liphook folk in particular or it would be somewhere useful like the Millennium Green, you can't really walk or cycle to it on the A3. So it's for travellers who probably miss the Petersfield one as it's not visible or signposted from the A3, this will be very prominent plus accessible easily from either side via a quick turnaround on the two junctions, saves building two!

Apparently no restaurant, so not for socialising, profit wasters who sit about chatting, I reckon it's going to be a delivery hub, in and out, lots of moped riders/Fiesta drivers zooming to Bordon, Hindhead, Haslemere, Grayshott etc, most a bit too far for the current site in Petersfield which is very busy nowadays anyway and a little too cramped to have 20 delivery drivers hanging around parked up. The popularity of the Grayshott one proved the demand for burgers and McNuggets is huge round here, this one now opens up the delivery zone to the good folk of Haslemere and environs who would never ever stoop to allow it in their posh town! Expect mopeds day and night up the Haslemere road!

As a plus the people in Bordon will now be spoilt with a choice of two, expect Weight Watchers to expand rapidly, revenues will be inflated all around, invest quick:)

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (23rd Jan 2022 - 17:11:31)

Hi,
I think this a wider issue about litter and rubbish blighting our countryside for decades, not just about a new food outlet opening.
It needs education for young children to older.
Littering is bad for their environment, and socially unacceptable for their future, and life.
In other European countries they our proud of their nation, like Austria, and they never see litter on the streets or anywhere.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Scott (23rd Jan 2022 - 17:30:18)

D......I think perhaps you should put into context or further explain your final part of your profound paragraph
about exactly why in a tongue in cheek way you needed to add Oops!!! I think we know why, but so its completely understood, succinct and perfectly clear to everyone what you are talking about on a chat headed Mcdonalds on A3.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (23rd Jan 2022 - 20:38:56)

Hi,
People in glass houses should not throw stones?
We all live under different size roofs in same area!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Scott (24th Jan 2022 - 07:27:45)

Completely agree Paul.

As for the litter. Mcd's haven't worked out how to keep the areas around the other 1300 stores in the UK clean so this one probably wouldn't be any different.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Debbie (24th Jan 2022 - 11:29:53)

er there is seating according to this article.

"Seating inside McDonald's would be for 97 people and there would be 35 car park spaces. A play frame for young children is also part of the plans for the site."

Thanks for that Debbie, even better news.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- RC (24th Jan 2022 - 13:33:22)

I’ve just checked and I see that it is Highways England and not the Highways Agency who are responsible for most of the A3.
They say that they are complying with their litter clearance obligations.
If you disagree with their assessment drop them (or Grant Schapps) a line.
A large percentage of the roadside trash has blown out of the open backs of builders’ lorries and pickups. As with skip transporters how about making it compulsory to cover their loads when travelling.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (24th Jan 2022 - 14:46:05)

Hi,
Maybe a good location for parents to have their children's birthday parties.
Ronald McDonald will be happy!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (25th Jan 2022 - 10:11:44)

Regarding Paul's point on Highways England being responsible for cleaning the A roads. That's true. However due to lack of budget and resource they themselves admit they can only do so twice a year. And they clear tonnes and tonnes of it.

If anyone has driven up or down the A3 recently I'd recommend looking closely. You can't drive for more than 2 metres without seeing litter.
As you drive northbound, the layby just before Barons car showroom on the other side of the carriageway, is absolutely disgusting.

So yes, Highways England may be responsible but it helps very little if the roads aren't actually being cleaned.

And yes, of course - education and penalties in tandem should be focussed on to prevent this happening in the first place.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (2nd Feb 2022 - 13:14:57)

For the sceptics, I've just picked up lots of McDonalds detritus along both the Haslemere Road and down Malthouse Meadows. And this is without a nearby McDonalds. So 'look forward' to plenty more if the new one gets the go ahead.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- ian (2nd Feb 2022 - 14:07:29)

Thank you Caroline, very public spirited of you, perhaps you could do the same for all the dog poo around the village. BTW, exactly how many McD items did you actually pick up? 1 bin bag, a carrier bag, a handfull? Sorry my scepticism has not been eased by your post

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (2nd Feb 2022 - 15:00:04)

Hi Ian - yes it is public spirited of me. I go litter picking at least twice a week in Liphook in my lunch hours or after work, often with my partner, and normally pick up at least a bin liner's worth of rubbish - not all McDonalds obviously. I'm confused by your response - are you annoyed with me for voluntarily clearing Liphook of litter?!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (2nd Feb 2022 - 15:03:11)

Oh and I've been known to pick up dog poo bags too (despite not being a dog owner) although not quite sure again Ian why you seem to think this is my job?!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- ian (2nd Feb 2022 - 15:53:12)

Hi Caroline, no annoyance at all, just disbelief! I walk in the same areas you kindly litter pick everyday and whilst there is a lot of dog poo currently and the usual general rubbish I cannot recall ever seeing noticeably large amounts of McDonald litter. BTW I don't eat McD's so no axe to grind

Re: McDonalds on A3

It’s been approved. :)

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Caroline (28th Mar 2022 - 16:40:19)

It has. Real shame. Just wait for the litter to arrive in our beautiful village....

Re: McDonalds on A3
- ian (28th Mar 2022 - 18:03:04)

Excellent news!

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (28th Mar 2022 - 18:55:58)

Hi,
Has not Liphook already suffering from litter like most other villages? People should take care, and be proud of their surroundings.

It should be taught at school as an important part of British life.

Other countries like Austria, are very clean for all that live there.

It is all good for our health and the environment.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- local resident (28th Mar 2022 - 19:16:21)

Is it possible to get to the northbound service station on foot/bike (not via the A3)

The OS map suggests a track running from the headley road?

I want to walk/cycle to Macdonalds on a Sunday morning to get my double sausage and egg McMuffin. Yes - I am that person.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (28th Mar 2022 - 22:25:39)

Hi,
Maybe a less dangerous route of travel along the busy A3 by-pass would be best.
Could there be a more local cafe, serving morning snacks to satisfy one's appetite?

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Liphookean (29th Mar 2022 - 15:52:35)

Sad part with the litter is that it is technically solvable relatively easily.
In the first instance we make it McD's problem by applying punitive charges for their litter found, say ÂŁ1 an item. In the medium term, have a barcode on the burger box. Scan it on sale and link it to the payment card or registration of drive through cars. If box is found littered then a charge is applied or summons issued.
If we are serious about changing our environment then we seriously need to make changes.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (29th Mar 2022 - 19:00:38)

Hi,
Great ideas Liphookean.
Litter should be in the mindset as a pest of one's life, and not an option to discard.
It is down to individual's behaviour in life, but to show the benefits of a clean and pleasant place to enjoy friends and family.

It is for now and your generations to come, cherish it.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- Jen (29th Mar 2022 - 21:09:43)

Alternatively, Liphookean, how about a deposit of ÂŁ5 per box/bag being charged on purchase and repayable on return? Every McDonald's could have a package return bin outside. You place the packages one at a time into a small bin at the top that scans the barcodes, then when you've deposited all your empty containers, you tap the "finish" button and scan your debit card for the refund.
If some people still cannot be bothered, then charities or individuals could collect them for the deposit returns.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- paul (29th Mar 2022 - 22:25:59)

Hi,
We are all adults who are mainly educated to make a simple task. It is a benefit to others to bin their rubbish in a suitable place.
.
I used to live a place abroad (Dubai) where traffic police rewarded drivers (around ÂŁ100 cash equivalent) on the spot for their driving habits.
It was used for good road behaviour, like indicating right at a crossroads for example.

The EHDC Council could hand out randomly hand out ÂŁ10 notes to the community passing-by for good litter disposal.
Word we will soon get round to win some reward, and behavioural change could start for our future.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- lac (31st Mar 2022 - 10:03:08)

There are a number of obvious facts from all this correspondence. Takeaway food outlets are always a litter problem. A tiny proportion of the population will always chuck stuff away - Griggs Green A3 turn off regularly has Macdonalds rubbish from Petersfield thrown out of car windows. The walk past Old Thorns always has a discarded coffee container from the coffee shop in the facility. Neither is Macdonalds or Old Thorns fault. Solution are obvious for car born pollution - prosecute car owners for rubbish chucking. Change the law to prosecute the owner (not the driver) so you don't need to identify who chucks the rubbish and set up number plate litter cameras with ÂŁ100 fines. AI systems are available which can check 1000s of pictures easily with human intervention only necessary once identified. Reward systems don't work as it rewards the probably already decent people. Law breakers only do it if they think they can get away with it. Random cameras would solve the problem. Will it be done? Alas no, as its easier to threaten ÂŁ1m fines, than actually catch people. Add in the obvious lack of will to do anything by councils/highway authorities and you have the current situation. I said thank you yesterday to the nice chap in hi visibility gear picking up litter round Griggs Green A3 turn off roads yesterday. Several bags full and all of it chucked out of cars by the brain dead. He shouldn't have to do this. Come on Hampshire/Highways do something about it! As for Liphook Madonalds, any take away food outlet will increase litter. As its on the Northbound side, watch out those living on roads around the Liphook turn off. Macdonads rubbish is heading your way.

Re: McDonalds on A3
- AF (31st Mar 2022 - 13:36:48)

I'm all for the Macdonalds.

As to the litter problem this is an ideal job for the criminals doing community service, perhaps with pink hi vis vests, with criminal printed on the back. Perhaps the police could round up the cannibis users in the park that people keep complaining about.
