Vaccine and Masks
- AF (4th Dec 2020 - 23:15:22)

As the sensible ones among us take the vaccine can we dispense with the horrible masks.

If you've had the vaccine you can't catch or spread the virus so surely these people can get rid of them.

Now for those who say you can't tell if people are vaccinated i've heard you can have an app on your phone to prove you had the vaccine.

And as for that professor who said we will have to keep the measures after the vaccine, well he can stick his ideas where the sun doesn't shine.

Roll on 2021 it can't be worse than 2020.

AF - Hardly sensible, maybe you meant senseless!

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- Penny Williamson (5th Dec 2020 - 13:49:40)

AF I was very unhappy about mask-wearing. However I have noticed when I am in a shop or public place I have not heard anyone coughing or sniffing since the wearing of masks was made mandatory. This time last year it seemed nearly every other person was blowing their nose and coughing seemingly not caring if they did this near people or food. Wearing masks not only helps stop the spreading of the Covid virus but other germs and viruses as well. I am thinking now that mask wearing is no bad thing. With regard to taking the vaccine I personally will comply as I know that vaccines have done an enormous amount of good in the world but I would not be happy if the taking of any vaccine was made compulsory. I know we do have laws in this country which in some people's minds encroach on their liberty such as the wearing of seat belts but with regard to vaccines we are talking about people being forced to accept a substance to be injected into their body. In my opinion this would be a step down a slippery road to a police state and I do not think it will ever happen in this country. There may well be some businesses that will insist on people being vaccinated such as airlines, but that is a personal choice of the business. With regard to D's comment in the Thread Covid Vaccine - A Debate - referring to vulnerable people not being able to have the vaccine, I understand that scientists are already working on a vaccine which would be suitable for those people which is good news.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- Scott (5th Dec 2020 - 14:35:31)

The vaccine is not a green light immediately after having it to no longer require masks and other reasonable distancing measures.

The time it will take to vaccinate enough of any population to sufficiently and consistently keep the 'r' number low will be many months from now. Its not going to be 'vaccinate Monday, everyones safe on Tuesday.'

The Professor I think you mention had a very well rounded point that the different approaches coming from 3 or 4 varied manufacturers will all be needed going forward as they have developed different ways in neutralising the virus and the way it attaches itself to cells. Its also been pointed out by many in the science/medicinal world that they cannot prove categorically yet that having any of the vaccines will mean you can no longer carry or pass on the virus and that they are going to continually monitor all of the people from the initial trials to clarify this point.

I'm not scared or bowing to media scare mongering as many call it but I will certainly remain cautious until I am comfortable with the evidence put out publicly.

Its been a horribly restrictive year but within the rules you can only go as far as you feel 'sensibly' comfortable with.

Merry Christmas

And 🤞 for a Happy New Year.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- John (5th Dec 2020 - 20:50:21)

AF,

If the vaccines works* the uk won't have enough of it till to vaccinate enough of the population to control this until summer 2021! Which means we are still in serious trouble till at least then. Don't be all surprised if another national lockdown occurs in February March April.

*Pzifer director sold his shares after they announced there vaccine was 95% effective, thus he cashed out for millions! Maybe he knew something we don't and the share price wont ever be that good thus cashed out? Wouldn't surprise me at all if half these big pharma companies are telling unaccountable porkies as they are more concerned about their shareholders than actual health. My bet is at Least 1 or 2 of these vaccines will be total flops and do nothing.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- Julie (6th Dec 2020 - 05:06:38)

AF. You can still catch and pass on the virus when you've had the vaccine, it just shouldn't make you as poorly as without it because you already have some defence against it.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- JT (6th Dec 2020 - 12:14:58)

@John, yes the CEO of Pfizer did sell his shares after the vaccine was announced but there's actually a much better reason than "he knows something we don't".

The way the financial markets work (in theory) is around everyone having equal knowledge of an company, based on typically what a company releases as public information.

CEOs however, as heads of these companies have inside knowledge meaning they know more than the average investor (insider knowledge, typically referred to as insider trading)

Because CEOs have this knowledge, rather than not own shares in their company, they work with a third party which manages their portfolio of stocks. They along with this firm set a set of policies up on when and at what price to buy and sell stocks in their companies. This schedule is typically set a year or more in advance.

The sale of the Pfizer CEOs stocks happened because, due to the news of the vaccine, the stocks hit an upper threshold set, that resulted in a sale.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- john (6th Dec 2020 - 15:00:39)

JT,

What we do know it the share were sold, we both agree on that. What we dont and can not prove it was done automatically as you are suggesting. So me saying "maybe he knows something we dont" is just as valid as you saying it all happened automatically.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- JT (6th Dec 2020 - 16:53:09)

@john

I am not speculating, I am basing this on fact here

www.cnn.com/2020/11/11/investing/pfizer...

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/pfizer...

And remarkably, I would say the most detailed statement here, if you read past the sensationlist bullet points

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8938065/CEO-sells-stock...

Also Reuters if you prefer a more dry representation

reuters.com/article/us-pfizer...

The bottom line is that this is not some grand conspiracy, the law requires him to put in place these programs of share selloffs. It's not really surprising if you as the CEO go "well my shares are worth say, 20 bucks, let's sell them if that hit 50 bucks" then your company two months later makes a remarkable breakthrough and the share price skyrockets.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- AF (7th Dec 2020 - 01:48:16)

Just to clarify as some may not have understood what i was saying.

Whilst you are waiting to get the vaccine which for some of us may be the second half of next year, or not having it at all you will regrettably have to carry on with the masks, social distancing mass unemployment and everything else.

However if you have had the vaccine you are safe and protected so can go without the special measures and can return to being a normal human being.

I'm sorry i don't believe you can still catch, carry and spread the virus after you've had the vaccine, which i know for most vaccine will be 2 doses 3 weeks apart.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- Penny Williamson (7th Dec 2020 - 14:14:27)

AF It is still possible to get Covid-19 despite having had the vaccination, because the Covid-19 vaccination like all vaccines does not give 100% immunity. However if you are unfortunate enough to catch it after receiving the vaccine it is very likely to be less severe so people who have been vaccinated should still:
• practice social distancing
• wear a face mask
• wash your hands carefully and frequently

After having the vaccine the body takes a few weeks to build up protection. The vaccine cannot give you COVID-19 infection, and a full course will reduce your chance of becoming seriously ill, but it is not certain whether it will stop you from catching and passing on the virus.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- john (7th Dec 2020 - 23:07:27)

@JT

Fair point :)

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- AF (8th Dec 2020 - 10:20:09)

Penny

Are you suggesting we wear masks and all the other measures FOREVER.

I won't be.

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- NP (8th Dec 2020 - 15:10:45)

Funnily enough I was listening to radio 1 newsbeat at lunchtime and one of the questions was ' can you still pass on Covid after you've had the vaccine'?
The answer from Dr Sarah Jarvis (GP and Clinical Director) -
They are not sure if you can still pass it on. Even if you have had both doses and waited a couple of weeks for your immune system, they are still not sure. They know it will reduce your risk, but you still need to do distancing, hand washing and face covering etc..

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- MR (8th Dec 2020 - 15:23:07)

AF - Penny was just passing on what the government website is saying...

The following is copied from their website...

"After having both doses of the vaccine most people will be protected against coronavirus.

It takes a few weeks after getting the 2nd dose for it to work.

There is a small chance you might still get coronavirus even if you have the vaccine.

This means it is important to:

continue to follow social distancing guidance
if you can, wear something that covers your nose and mouth in places where it's hard to stay away from other people"

So it's going to be a while yet before we're out and about and mixing with each other properly!!

Re: Vaccine and Masks
- Penny Williamson (8th Dec 2020 - 16:24:27)

Well AF now you have the answer from NP as well as myself. No hopefully we will not have to social distance and wear masks for ever after all nothing lasts for ever does it? However for the foreseeable future we will be required to comply with the current guidelines.
