Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Concerned Resident (4th Oct 2020 - 10:08:05)

Does anyone know who owns the poor horse which is tied up on a field at Bohunt Manor, just behind the trees on the Portsmouth Road ?

The poor animal is tied up on a short chain and has been just standing in the pouring rain for days.

It concerns me that this animal is suffering and should have proper shelter.

The owner should be reported to the RSPCA

Concerned Resident, if you’re that concerned report it to the RSPCA yourself.

They have left a water bucket with a contact number on it for anyone concerned. Apparently belongs to a man from a landscaping company based near greensands/devils lane who has lost his field so tethered it there.

If the horse is tethered it won't be able to move around to keep warm. At the very least it should have a thick, waterproof rug, and someone should be coming to feed and check it daily

This must be Mr Goddard's horse. He has a landscaping company called Goddards Landscaping I think. Maybe someone could contact him.

Is this another Lucky (or Unlucky as I’ve always thought of him) . Apparently he’s been taken under someone’s wing, Poor thing. Born in the field about 20 years ago and never been out
As for this unlucky boy, the same thing again. I’m going to investigate and ring the number that is ?? scribed on a bucket there. Why do people think that ‘owning a horse’ is some kind of status symbol. I’ve had horses for many many years and would be ashamed not to given my all to them. They are veeeery time consuming and veeery expensive to keep!!

Helllo,
Thank you to all that are concerned about the horse, but those who clearly don’t monitor the horse daily wouldn’t know that this horse is attended to twice a day.
Permission has been granted from the land owner for this grazing.
I do appreciate the concerns from all, but I can assure you all that he is well looked after and Anyone is welcome to check him over or have him checked over.
My number is on the water tub for any concerns.
Len.

Hi Len

When you say he's well tended to can you reassure everyone that includes he gets exercise/freedom, shelter from the rain, blankets etc? Is he going to be permanently there?

Thanks

- Len (5th Oct 2020 - 11:43:39)

Hi Jane
Rest assured he is well looked after ie, bucket fed twice a day and watered.
As for exercise, the pony is on a long tether so therefore gets all the exercise he needs, at this moment in time.
The pony is an outdoor pony and always has been so will be hardened to the elements but rest assured he will be rugged the moment I feel he is in need of one.

time schedules are a private arrangement.

For any more concerns please give me a call from the details I have left on the water tub and thank you for all your concerns.

Len

It has been bucketing down today and the poor pony is still tied up on a short tether out in the open in the pouring rain. No shelter and no companion horse, just a couple of metres of chain imprisoning the pony. This cannot be right. Only today the government finally announced legislation to ban the cruel live export of animals yet, on our doorstep here in Liphook, this happens. The gentleman who put the horse there, Mr Len Goddard, runs a local business, GODDARD LANDSCAPES and he should provide a proper shelter for this horse, especially as the winter is only just beginning. (Could any of this be connected to the horse box abandoned at Malthouse Meadows, reported on this forum 16th Nov?)

What do new forest ponies do when raining?

Linda.

Your complaining about a horse that's live outside all its life and being tied up, but at the same time moaning it's on its own. Sounds like you would be happier if it was 2 horses there instead of 1. As for keep saying about the man's company sounds like you have issues with him if it is him and trying to damage his reputation and company .
What about all the horses just the other side of liphook heading towards fernhurst .
Theres 30 plus out there every day in muddy fields and all weathers.

New Forest ponies are not tied up they can shelter under trees. They are all owned by someone other and the owners do not leave them out in the really bad weather.

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Linda (3rd Dec 2020 - 20:41:51)

this is a solitary pony, tied up around its neck with a couple of metres of metal chain and left in the middle of an open field. New Forest ponies roam freely in family groups and can select shelter when the weather turns. Horses and ponies are social animals, naturally living in family groups and should not be isolated on their own. This is cruelty

- passfield resident (4th Dec 2020 - 03:14:45)

Is the horse tied up because the field isn't properly fenced? Horses do like to be able to move around when it is cold to help them keep warm

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Joe (4th Dec 2020 - 14:36:14)

The owner of the horse appears to defend himself on here. I would ask him why does he keep this horse? Does he ride it? Is it a family pet ? Why is it tied up? Just sell it to someone who will treat it better than you.

I could not help myself, I bought a bag of hay for her from Hiscocks.

Does anyone also know that if you go to the end of bohunt manor that there is another horse which has been there for a very long time. It has no coat to keep it warm and dry, and i dont think it has been cared for as it is very skinny and looks awful. Does this horse also belong to the same gentlman?

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Anon (7th Dec 2020 - 20:37:12)

It’s a different owner and if you’ve snooped around properly you’ll see it has a field shelter

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor

It's the horse at Foley manor I worry about. It's out in all weathers with no protection.

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Joe (8th Dec 2020 - 13:47:51)

So, anon it is tied up within the shelter then? Why keep a horse tied up? Is it not fenced in your land properly?

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- angela warren (8th Dec 2020 - 14:49:49)

hi anon i have worked down there over a year now and see the horse every week and yes there is a shelter but it is not going to keep the horse warm though the rain and cold months ahead of us. It should have something to put over the poor thing. I know it has the freedom of the field and is not tethered but we wouldnt go out in his weather without a coat.

Perhaps the person who posted the original post should ring World Horse Welfare 0300 333 6000 between 8.00 and 5.30 Monday to Friday - they should be able to help..

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Jef (8th Dec 2020 - 15:49:49)

So people are so concerned about the horse that they dont realise that its a completely different horse there now to when this thread was started , imo they are not worried about the horses welfare they are more worried about the person that owns the horse ,

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Anon (8th Dec 2020 - 16:46:55)

It’s not my horse and it’s not tied up. Horses get retired from work just as we do, quite right too. Agree the conditions are appalling

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Joe (8th Dec 2020 - 19:02:11)

I do not know the owner, think the above poster is trying to deflect from the real issues which is animal cruelty perpetrated by whoever owns the animal _-' thats irelevant.

Re: Horse tied up in the rain at Bohunt Manor
- Anon-1 (9th Dec 2020 - 14:53:32)

Both fields that the horses are in are full of ragwort now died back this is still poisonous to horses as it loses its bitter taste. it is still toxic if eaten in small amounts as it remains in the liver until a fatal amount is consumed., the active compound in ragwort is Pyrrolizidine alkaloids which cause irreversible damage to the liver.
