Anchor same old same old
- David (6th Aug 2020 - 18:33:17)

When will the Anchor employ staff who are professional

I witnessed what can only be described as a frantic, flapping out of his depth manager trying to deal with a customer query and listened to a extremely immature bar girl and waitress cussing and swearing about the customers.

Clearly with the ongoing restrictions there is a little pressure on pub staff though things really aren't that difficult.
The staff seem to be struggling and more confused then the customers with regards to the rules.

Have the staff at the Anchor ever heard of the expression "The customer is always right"

As a former employee who is now bar manager at a different establishment. I can say management is a complete shambles . Staff are under paid but still have no experience with Bar work. Amount of alcoholic parents who leave there kids in the garden while they get drunk is also a disgrace. Not going to mention names but how the royal anchor allow these Bad parents to get drunk while looking after there kids is disgusting.

- S (10th Aug 2020 - 14:00:40)

Why bother going there in first place ?
I've lived in Liphook for 9 years and have been there twice.

Terrible pub, terrible staff and terrible patrons

Shameful!!

- Joe (10th Aug 2020 - 14:59:53)

People use the pub because of the cheap food and drink then expect a Raymond Blanc experience from a hungry horse chain pub. As the previous poster said, parents expect pub staff to police their unruly children who run around in there. Stay at home if you cannot afford a babysitter or cannot control your badly behaved children.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- James (10th Aug 2020 - 20:24:03)

It's not the children who are badly behaved. It's the parents.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- er (10th Aug 2020 - 22:17:31)

More of the same old griping about the Anchor well when I go in seems popular enough, serving it's customers who maybe don't all want to be with you perfect moaners down at The Links or Deers Hut etc, plenty of staff bringing out the beer and burgers to the great family garden, why don't you go to the Ritz for your childless dinner, there are enough places in this area to go and spend £100 for a deluxe bistro boeuf pie and latte, this is our place mate!

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Jack (11th Aug 2020 - 07:33:41)

The food at the deers hut is slightly better than average, but certainly not great, and is hugely expensive. They also have very uninspired veggie options. The food at the links is certainly very average. When we moved here 5 years ago it was excellent but has progressively got worse ever since. Can’t comment on the anchor but since it’s a hungry horse I don’t go in after numerous bad experiences over the years with the chain. I’ve heard good things about the thai menu at the green dragon so will try there. Anyone tried the sports bar at old thorns?

- Penny Williamson (11th Aug 2020 - 08:54:48)

We had a meal at The Deers Hut last night. Food and service excellent.

- Gr (11th Aug 2020 - 13:22:06)

kings carvery at old thorns is very good often 2 for 1 vouchers online

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Susie (11th Aug 2020 - 14:03:59)

Deers hut menu hugely overpriced,IMHO.

Been a couple of times when family visit, messed about with our booking and waited an hour for starters, meagre portions too.
Lots of messy uncleared tables and flies !
Staff appeared not to notice, with a ‘thank you for bringing it to my attention‘

Sent the food back, paid for drinks no apology, or compensation offered, so we voted with our feet !

Never to darken their doors again.

- Lord liphook (11th Aug 2020 - 14:08:40)

With the government discounts they must be paying you to eat at the hungry horse.
Got to love the fake reviews on trip advisor

Re: Anchor same old same old
- P Roberts (11th Aug 2020 - 14:40:41)

We had an excellent meal at the Deers Hut last week and the staff were efficient and friendly. Basically you get what you pay for.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- passfield resident (11th Aug 2020 - 15:14:49)

Do the Deers Hut still add an oversized service charge?

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Penny Williamson (11th Aug 2020 - 16:14:05)

Susie I don't know when you last went to the Deers Hut. As I said we went last night. The service was excellent and very prompt, staff were polite and efficient. No dirty plates or any sort of mess - I certainly didn't notice any flies. Food was very good and not over priced and @Passfield Resident the service charge was not exhorbitant.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Tim (11th Aug 2020 - 17:06:55)

Not over priced?! 17 quid plus 10 percent service charge for fish and chips? The beer choice is mediocre as well.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Susie (11th Aug 2020 - 17:35:08)

Penny,

any service charge for poor service is exorbitant, this is not London !!

Each to their own opinion, judge by your own experience, my opinion was based on my experiences.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Liphook oldie (11th Aug 2020 - 18:17:43)

Regardless of where you go there should never be a service charge. It’s down to the customer if they have had good service at a Reasonable Price then they can pay what they think is reasonable. Going back to places to eat the Green Dragon under new Management is great very very good food and lots of it . Good beer all at a good price and no service charge.Best place in Liphook to visit.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Mitch Allan (11th Aug 2020 - 19:25:54)

The earlier contributor who has visited twice in 9 years. Is that a position where you can make an objective judgement.
The Anchor is what it is. If you’re happy with it. Go there. If you’re not . Don’t go there.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- J (11th Aug 2020 - 19:26:28)

I am very much against a separate service charge and I'm also against tipping.

The cost of employing waiting staff should be taken into account when setting the prices for the items on the menu. The price you see should be the price you pay, imo.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Diner (11th Aug 2020 - 19:30:50)

Deers Hut Prices ~ £ 17.00 for Fish and Chips + 10% Service Charge !! Outrageous !!

Claridges Mayfair ~ £ 24.50 ~ all the business including quail egg

No service charge

Better of at Morrison's ~ Best fish and chips ever

Re: Anchor same old same old
- David (11th Aug 2020 - 22:12:25)

With those prices they should change the name to "The Pretentious Hut"

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Ian (12th Aug 2020 - 05:35:51)

The Deers Hut is great, expensive yes but good value for quality good and service and prices keep the riffraff away.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Yellow Bannanna Adrian (12th Aug 2020 - 08:01:59)

Well i went there when they re-opened had to book of course and had a good meal at a good price. As for service seemed a bit strange for 3 staff members to clear away the plates of just 2 people but if that the rules so be it.
Never had a bad meal there.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Diner (12th Aug 2020 - 08:13:17)

Ian ~ Riff Raff , what a great expression you must subscribe to the late great Alan Coren's theory that ' The purpose of Sainsbury's is to keep the Riff Raff out of Waitrose'

lol

Re: Anchor same old same old
- passfield resident (12th Aug 2020 - 09:03:28)

Ian-I was at a local pub which also is expensive the other day. It keeps out the riff raff but was full of loud , braying yuppies talking rubbish. I'd prefer the riff raff, I think.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- J (12th Aug 2020 - 10:46:57)

To clarify, I actually rather like The Deer's Hut and have had some lovely meals there. I'm just not keen on service charges per se, hence my earlier comment.

However, on reflection, in these difficult times when food service businesses are incurring greater expenses in order to be "Covid compliant" and can accommodate fewer customers than before, I will not begrudge paying my share of those extra costs in the form of a supplementary service charge.

Yuppies talking rubbish - reverse snobbery at it’s finest ha ha

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Joe (12th Aug 2020 - 11:34:31)

We are away from the original point of how bad the Anchor is. I am interested to try the Green dragon under new management and hope there are no drunken louts unruly children or service charge.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Susie (12th Aug 2020 - 13:31:42)

Joe

remember thats a tall order, this is Liphook after all........
do you want all those undesirables you mention confined to the Anchor? surely not, don't believe they have space to accommodate them all.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Liphook Oldie (12th Aug 2020 - 16:12:06)

As said have been to the Dragon three times since they opened no problems at all. Have you seen the size of the landlord tall I mean in the trade for a long time with a Pub like the Dragon in Wokingham nows what he’s doing . Give it a try I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Anchor same old same old
- RightSaidFred (12th Aug 2020 - 20:59:17)

The Deer’s Hut and The Green Dragon (under new management) are welcoming, friendly pubs with great staff and good food. As for The Anchor, you get what you pay for. I haven’t been to The Old Thorns to eat or drink for a long time so will give them a go., Does anyone have any other local recommendations?

Re: Anchor same old same old
- Thomas (13th Aug 2020 - 16:32:27)

Regarding the service charge at the The Deers Hut

My understanding is 1 pound from the service charge per a table goes to the staff. The rest if any goes to the pub
