Suspicious people out walking
- Jack (4th Aug 2020 - 09:18:11)

Feel this should be mentioned as I am aware that dogs are a prime target for thieves.

I was out walking my dogs this morning when I came across three walkers (2 men and a woman) who I think were speaking in polish/Romanian, none of them had a dog with them, yet they had dog whistles and a leash. Which seemed odd to me, as they clearly did not have a dog anywhere in sight nor were they looking for their lost dog as there was no calling or use of that whistle.

I did watch them to make sure. So make of it what you will, but I can’t help but wonder what they were up to - please be careful fellow dog walkers and look after your furry friends. Best, Jack

Copied from a post on an Alresford group
STOLEN DOGS

There are now 8 dogs missing, suspected stolen within a 10 mile radius of Alresford. All have disappeared within the last 9 days!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR DOGS OFF LEAD UNLESS IN A SECURE AREA.

The scumbags stealing them are taking them from well known dog walking areas. Please be vigilant and if you see anything suspicious in these areas report to police, but most importantly put it on your Facebook groups so it circulates quickly.
Your dog is family, please take care !

Jack, where was this? Very worrying

It was at the field/lake areas behind the silent garden estate towards the foley estate.

I did watch for a while from a distance and at one point the woman disappeared for a while, whilst the men hung around on the path. Could have been innocent, but with no where to go other than private land/property it seemed very odd. Very concerning.

Keep your dogs on their leads, doggy people, then all will be well.

Alternatively, if they really must be let loose off the lead, walk them in an enclosed, specifically designated dog-walking area.

Just a thought that maybe they would use the excuse of looking for a dog to go onto peoples property if they were challenged.

I’ve seen these people several times walking that path, they do have a dog but it runs off for ages, they never seem concerned.

Agree doggie lovers please keep your wolves on leads, they may be sweet as pie and just want to be friendly, no missy, put that lady down, but for the rest of us it's a lottery with painful prizes and it's illegal in most places.

Thanks all.

Oh and take all those little plastic bags home with you, not piled up by the gate.

er, you're not making any friends here! Still, had to be said!

Given what Anon said most of this post is null and void and the original posters suspicions are also null and void.

Questions should be asked as to why the original poster portrayed those people as suspicious.

Am not suggesting dogs aren’t being stolen, but it does appear in this case some backtracking is needed

Re: Suspicious people out walking
- Alan (5th Aug 2020 - 08:11:58)

In reply to John.
It's pretty obvious why the original post had suspicions due to what he saw at the time. He never said they were stealing dogs but was worried they may be up to no good. All he did was make his feelings known.

No apology needed. No reason to backtrack. No harm done.

To Anon, I have also seen these people before and once again with a whistle and lead yet no dog and they were on a main road - why would they leave their dog roaming free whilst coming onto a main road?

I think up to no good - I’m glad Jack raised this as people need to be aware. Maybe they were just out on a walk but having dog items and no dog at a time when dogs are being stolen seems strange to me.

- Peter (5th Aug 2020 - 14:00:06)

Hmmm 🤔 I wonder if they spoke English and appeared to be born and raised in Blighty would this post have ever occurred?

We now know their dog likes to run about ahead of them so in fact they were just walking their own dogs minding there own business, however since we found that out some people are still posting suspicions

Re: Suspicious people out walking
- Jack (5th Aug 2020 - 14:44:30)

Peter and John, I explained why they looked suspicious which has nothing to do with their accent, nationality, colour of their hair, skin, eyes, favourite type of food or holiday destination- the pointer on their language was purely as another way to identify for anyone who was concerned. You are clearly not, therefore there is no need for your pointless comments. Some people have far too much time on their hands. Jack

Well said Jack!
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I’m a dog owner so appreciate being aware of this!
To the doubters..... if innocent.... all good but if not then us dog owners can be extra vigilant

- Penny Williamson (5th Aug 2020 - 17:59:27)

Well said indeed Jack. Thank you so much for your original post. I would rather people posted on this subject if they think there is something suspicious even if it is unfounded than not post at all. There is very real cause for concern about the number of dogs going missing in this area and surrounding areas and we must all be vigilant. To John and Peter I would say that your posts are out of order – people who post such as you did discourage others from speaking out. No names were mentioned in Jack’s post, just a description alerting people of a possible danger and he obviously felt, as I probably would have, that this scenario looked very odd. Personally I think it is still odd – just because they apparently had a dog, albeit a disappearing one, that doesn’t mean that they would not take another dog.

Re: Suspicious people out walking
- Anon (5th Aug 2020 - 22:26:53)

I can see how them being at the road without a dog would seem odd and there’s certainly no harm in being aware and vigilant. As I previously said, I have seen these people several times with a dog, once on a lead and the others off and legging it, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve lost it. Given the casual nature of their walks, which includes blatantly smoking weed and flip flops I personally don’t think they are dog thieves but that’s just my view. As I said, no harm in being careful.

Sorry, but this is hilarious!! I saw these people and stood and chatted to them for some time, with my dogs. The woman, very smartly dressed, with her work id was German.
The other man and teenager were trying to get their dog back.
At no time did anyone try to steal my dogs.
Dog thieves favour taking dogs from gardens or other times when they are vulnerable, such as in a car.
So be vigilant
