Easter recycle bin collection - Editor (8th Apr 2020 - 12:42:13) Easter bank holiday bin collection changes Please be advised that following the Easter Monday bank holiday on Monday 13 April 2020, bin collections will take place 24 hours later than usual. Normal collection date —> Revised collection date Wednesday 15 April 2020 —> Thursday 16 April 2020 Normal service will resume on Wednesday 22 April 2020. Hop to your recycling bin (it is Easter!) – but don’t just throw everything in. Here are our tips for Easter recycling. Easter eggs After you have enjoyed your chocolate please put the aluminium foil and wrappers, with any plastic packaging into your rubbish bin. The good news is that, like any other piece of cardboard, the outer packaging is 100% recyclable and can go in your black wheeled bin. Collapsing the boxes first helps leave room in your bin for more recycling. Hot cross bun bags There’s one question to ask when it comes to recycling plastic – ‘is it the shape of a bottle?’ The golden rule is, if it is, it goes in your recycling bin. We are asking for your help and for you to think about our crews who deal with your waste during the coronavirus pandemic. Lots of our staff are still working to keep our streets clean and free of rubbish during this challenging time. They can’t work from home, which means they could be more likely to come in contact with the virus. How are we supporting our crews? All of our crews have been briefed using industry guidance from the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) on social distancing and, wherever possible, are adhering to these. Praise for our bin crews Here are some more of the lovely notes and letters left for our bin collection teams. They genuinely appreciate every single one as they continue to work hard in difficult circumstances. Thank you! You can help keep everyone safe and the waste service operating by doing the following: EHDC binsss Putting the right things in the right bin It’s not enough just to recycle. It’s important to recycle right. Items should be clean, dry and loose in your recycling bin. For helpful hints on what you can and can’t recycle visit our website. Protective equipment such as overalls and masks should be placed in rubbish (black lidded) bin. If you have come into contact with anyone who is ill or self-isolating, your overalls and masks should be double-bagged and only placed in your rubbish bin after 72 hours. Double bagging personal waste If you are ill or self-isolating please double bag any personal waste, for example tissues and anti-bacterial wipes. This waste should be kept separate from the rest of your rubbish and only put in the bin after 72 hours. Park sensibly on collection days Please park considerately. With more people at home the crews are having difficulties getting in to and travelling along some roads due to parked cars blocking access. Please make sure there is enough room for the refuse vehicle to pass your car on bin collection day. Washing your hands before and after touching your bin We should all be washing our hands more often, and especially before and after touching something that other people might touch. By washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water before and after handling your wheeled bins you can help keep your family and our crews safe. Being responsible with your waste Hampshire County Council's decision to close the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) means that you cannot take your unwanted items to the tip. If you find that you have items that you no longer want or need please store them at your property until the HWRCs re-open. If you cannot wait and choose to contact a professional to take your waste away, please ensure you use a registered waste carrier that holds a licence issued by the Environment Agency. If you don’t and your waste ends up fly-tipped it’s you who could end up with a big fine. Recycling other items Visiting recycling banks (textile and glass) is considered an unnecessary journey. Please store your items somewhere safe at home and recycle them once the restrictions are lifted. Reduce and reuse as much as possible We are aiming to keep collections running as normal for as long as possible, but now is a good time to start trying to reduce how much waste you create and how much you throw away. Composting During this period of self-isolation and working from home, many people are finding they have more time to do things they’ve been putting off for years. If you’ve never done it before, why not consider setting up a compost bin – it will help get rid of all your peelings and gardening waste and as a result you’ll make your own compost which can enrich your soil.
