Royal Surrey parking tips
- NP (12th Feb 2020 - 21:47:15)

Hi I have an appt on Fri pm best ideas to park - can you still use Tescos?

Thank you

2 hours free in Tesco but yesterday someone told me they got fined for being 2 mins over. Waiting times for appointments vary (delay of 1hr+ for outpatient appointment) so if you're on your own it makes it tricky to go back to Tesco to move it. They also know if you edit & return.

I have friends who park at the park and ride and walk over to the hospital. You can try that... although that is not the purpose of park and ride.

Park up at Artington park & ride then bus from Guildford bus station every 10-15 minutes up to hospital which drops you at the door.

I can only assume that Anne has no need to visit the Royal Surrey as aside from the exorbitant prices you are lucky if you can find a space. On several occasions when using the hospital I have driven round and round both front and back car parks and had to give up and use Tesco.

@ Ann - clearly you have not tried to park at the hospital recently! If you had you would realise that from 8am through to mid afternoon the carpark is totally full and you can wait up to an hour for a single space to become free, its terrible and adds to what can already be a stressful time. I regularly have out patient appointments and the parking situation got so bad I now rely on lifts to drop me off and pick me up

onslow car park is the park and ride near to rsh .

Has anyone who uses the park and ride and walks to the hospital ever been challenged? I was under the impression that to use the park and ride you had to physically use the bus and pay for the bus ticket which is used to exit the barrier.

I attend meetings at the RSCH weekly and always park at the park and ride and walk to the hospital. The barrier is not in use to go through and there is no way they can prove you are using the bus or not as no ticket to display on car required etc. I think you will find most of the cars there are hospital staff but with the allocated expensive hospital parking currently available who can blame them! Good luck x

Did you realise that the staff have to pay for their own parking and have to be there early ( before 7.30am ) to get a space at all? How much would we be prepared to pay to park near the hospital ?

I have an appointment at the hospital in a couple of weeks and the treatment is such that I shouldn't use a bus afterwards, but can walk (nuclear medicine - it's a long story!). I know from recent experience that the official parking at the hospital is impossible in the daytime and I will possibly need more than 2 hours (ruling-out the Tesco car park). I see above that the barriers were not in use at the nearby Onslow Park and Ride in 2020 (although this is not officially supposed to be used for the hospital). Does anyone know if this is still the case? Are there any other tips?

I have a vague idea there's a network of lovely volunteers who will take people to hospital appts isn't there? Check FB or the magazine perhaps.

Is the parking at Portsmouth hospital as bad please?

Parking at the QA Hospital is stress free. There are always parking spaces available when ever I have been there in recent years. Pay on exit so no worries about time deadlines.

Have you contacted Liphook Voluntary Care who provide transport to Hospital and Doctors appointments, You need to give them enough notice to arrange a driver. They provide an excellent service using volunteer drivers.
Good luck

I've had to visit RSH a number of times well into double figures in the last few months. The parking is not as bad as people think, often you get a space straight away, and if not driving around slowly, not right up to the person ahead and looking out for someone on foot who may be returning to the car normally works. I've gone at various times of day and always got a space within 15 mins, normally alot quicker.. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

Care in Liphook - Care in Haslemere will drive you to RSCH for a voluntary donation

Bernard,

If you’re not supposed to get on a bus, are you still ok to drive? If not I’d be willing to take you/bring you home if I’m not working at the time of your appointment?

Let me know.

Re: Royal Surrey parking tips
- Bernard (5th Nov 2023 - 08:30:18)

Thanks for the tips everyone. It's a tricky one to explain, but, apparently, I have to stay some distance from children and pregnant women for a few hours after the dose of nuclear medicine, hence avoiding the bus and driving myself. I didn't realise you could top-up the Tesco parking after the two hours is up, so I'll definitely look into that.

Re: Royal Surrey parking tips
- Billy (5th Nov 2023 - 10:18:24)

The Liphook Voluntary Care drivers still have to park up (while the patient is being seen) so any lack of parking spaces affects these drivers equally much.
Incidentally the Hospital has planning permission for a new multi-story car park (not on the hospital site but near the university buildings); I imagine all that is needed now is ££smillion to build the thing.

Being a voluntary driver with Liphook Voluntary Care is well worth it. New drivers always needed, if only to spread the load. No fixed hours - where and when you drive is entirely up to you. And you are your own boss ! I do approx 1 or 2 trips per week, its no big commitment. Nice people too.

Hi NP,

I work at the Royal Surrey and I’d recommended parking at Tesco and then paying the extra if you go over the two hours free. Will be cheaper then paying at the hospital ☺️
