uPVC French Doors air gap
- Richard Rowson (15th Jan 2020 - 09:24:23)

Any recommendations for repairing a pair of French doors that a gap has appeared between the two doors?

While you may end up getting an installer / fitter to actually fix, there are some things you can check in the meantime. You haven't mentioned where the gap is and how big?

Check that there is no visible damage / obstruction around the door frames - i.e. nothing to prevent proper closing
Ensure all hinges are correctly tightened, no loose screws

Check the frame is square - most closing / gap issues are actually down to the installation of the frame - you can check this by measuring diagonally from top left to bottom right, and then top right to bottom left. This should tell you if the frame is square, or off (and by how much). You can do this with a measuring tape, or string. You're looking to see if the measurements are equal, thereby confirming the frame us 'square'.

Check each individual door unit is 'square' by repeating the above for each French door

Can you put a long (e.g. a metre) level across the bottom sill, to check if it's level but importantly to see if the sill rises / falls at any point

Once you've done the above, you should have an idea if anything is off or needs adjusting. However, huge caveat that without additional info the above is mainly aimed at helping you identify where an defect might lie - and may need external attention.

(BTW my father was an engineer, he taught me how to square and true doors year ago - his techniques may be old school but they work!)

Hope you get the problem sorted.

There is a gap at the very bottom where the two opening panels meet, they do close though

There are adjustor screws on modern upvc doors did mine few years back if it's just door drop and nothing more serious, mine weren't closing smoothly. Can't remember the specifics I looked it up and it did the job.
