Experienced players only? At U10 level?? Good grief

This is a shocking post! Experienced players only are you joking! You should be welcoming all types of players and should be grateful when children want to join! As for trials, it’s no wonder grassroots football is dying when under 10’s need a trial to play for a team! What an absolute JOKE!!!!

I’m surprised the trial is free and you are not asking them to pay for the trial!!!

I am pretty sure Neil is only asking for a couple of new players to join an existing team and would prefer experienced but I am sure that isn't the priority. That is how I read it anyway.

The use of the word trial is what it is, a trial is both for the child and the team to determine if it's the right fit. At grassroots level it's not about trialling ability it is about the child enjoying it, making new friends and wanting to be a part of the team and improving. The coaches, current players and club are all on trial with any new player and parent as much as he is with the team. It's for the coaches to make sure that the player really wants to play and is HAPPY being with his potential new team mates, wants to learn and isn't disruptive to others.

Just remember all the coaches are volunteers, who spend a lot of time doing this so that children in Liphook can play football.

I don't think the replies will have helped anyone here.

Can anyone suggest a good place for a very enthusiastic but NOT experienced five year old to start playing?

I am the chairman of the club, so I feel I should add my thoughts here. Neil is one of our managers, a very committed one at that. His team, who have been playing together since they were 6 years old are a good little team. What Neil is asking for is for new players who have some experience. There is nothing wrong with that.
A child with no experience would find it tough to keep up with the other children who have been playing together for a few years and play in a very tough league against much larger towns teams. It would be very unfair to throw an inexperienced child in to an established team.
Goran, I can assure you though that at Liphook United grass roots football is thriving and I make it a priority that it continues to do so, we have hundreds of children playing football and loving every minute of it. Your comment leads me to believe you have no idea about grass roots football, especially in Liphook.
Your comment stating your suprise about our free trial was disappointing. If you knew about football fees in the local area, you would know that Liphook United have a completely reasonable fee structure and are in fact one of the cheapest clubs around. We are a not for profit organisation who rely on the fantastic club members and coaches who provide football for hundreds of children for no payment whatsoever.

Katie, we have a new U7's team starting up, any child who is 6 or over can play league games as per league rules and 5 year olds are welcome to train, regardless of their ability, we would love to welcome you to our football club.

Kind regards
Andrew.

Well said Andrew

I have run a youth football team myself in the past so I am well aware of the commitment required so I take my hat off to Neil. I am sure that 'experienced players' means someone who has played some football already and there is no need to turn these words around to suit your own agenda.

Let's all be a bit more positive about the work all sports coaches do in the area to support children and if you feel like getting involved, I'm sure that you will be able to find clubs and organisations that will be happy for your help!

This is a bit of a disappointing post.

I've been in sport all my life as a player and a coach.

At the age of under 10 sport should really be inclusive for all. If you as a club can not accommodate new players with little or no experience then what does that say about you. It seems a shame that through narrow mindedness your club is not willing to increase it's pool of players.

I'm sure that with a little planning it wouldn't have been out of the question to build towards a B team or to tweak training.

Interesting fact, good players at a young age often take for granted their talent and don't progress to the same level as kids who work hard for it. By the time they're 14,15,16 it all balances out or goes the other way.

The real question is who wants to play for a club that pick and choose who can join. Trials for under 10's is the most ridiculous thing I've heard.

Get your heads out your backsides it's about all the kids, participation and enjoyment, not results.

Mr Mason

If you did coach then you would know first hand how much work is involved in setting up and running a team. You would also know how difficult it is to find anyone to step forward and volunteer to help run an additional team if you have too many players for one.

Youth leagues only ALLOW you to register a fixed number of players and only these players can play. So if you have more than the allowed you cannot offer match football to them only training. How many children want to train every week and not ever play in matches? Not many I suspect so depending on the age group you need to find anything from 8 to 15 additional players to start an additional team but more importantly the parent volunteers to look after it.

Volunteers need to have DBS checks, first aid qualifications, coaching qualifications and safeguarding children certifications before they are allowed to help, all of this takes time and costs. No youth match or training can go ahead without someone with all these qualifications there. All of this is in place to provide the safest possible environment for the children, something everyone wants and it takes time to get.

It's really not as easy as it you think.

OK, so the original post was 'misworded' not a crime. What i read into it is he is looking for more children to make sure the existing ones can carry on playing games.
Neil, keep up your hard work and good luck with your recruitment. You may even get some of these people off their keyboards and down to help and volunteer with some coaching.
