Tower road hall
- Becks (21st Jun 2018 - 23:47:34)

Does anyone happen to know what the plans are for the hall on Tower road at all? Have noticed the church sign has been removed and new fencing has gone up. Do we know what it's going to become?

Still going to have a religious use I believe

A mosque in the village would certainly will help open up the minds of certain members of our village community

The sign on this hall now reads:-
" Plymouth Brethren Place of Prayer Liphook".

Thank you. Mystery solved

This is the lot who were trying to build a massive new church on greenfield site down by the links pub.
So good news they’re using the site in tower road.
Bit of a strange sect with some weird beliefs (Don't worry they wont see this as don't approve of TV's computers and any books except THE BIBLE)

Adrian, I am intrigued to know what weird beliefs you refer to. Or are you just making your statement out of ignorance and prejudice?

I have taught Plymouth Brethren children, they are delightful well mannered children. They aren't allowed to celebrate birthdays, use IT including TV. I would rather have a Brethren place of worship than many of the alternative uses the hall could be put to!!

Wouldn't have thought that building would be of interest to them - far too small for what they want?

Re: Tower road hall
- Iwik61 (25th Jun 2018 - 16:57:41)

I think you may find that they don't have or approve mixed racial marriages.Sorry but in this day and age that is bigotry

I would urge anyone about to weigh in here to consider that freedom of religion is held up by many people and most nations as a fundamental human right.

In the UK, human rights are protected by the Human Rights Act 1998. The Act gives effect to the human rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights.

Article 9 - the right to freedom of religion and belief is one of the rights protected by the Human Rights Act.

Article 9 is a qualified right and as such the freedom to manifest a religion or belief can be limited, so long as the limitation:

is prescribed by law;
is necessary and proportionate; and
pursues a legitimate aim, namely:
the interests of public safety;
the protection of public order, health or morals; or
the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

So it isn't without limits.

It is also worth considering, before suggesting we "may find" or alleging "bigotry" that The Public Order Act 1986 was amended by the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 which created a new offence; that of stirring up hatred against people on religious grounds.

Of course the Human Rights Act also makes provision for the freedom of speech, but the exercise of these freedoms, carries with it duties and responsibilities.

Intolerance and ignorance can manifest itself in some terrible ways, lets adopt a more tolerant and open minded stance.

I appreciate the editor of this forum can try and prevent inappropriate posts, but lets not make their job harder.

Is it just me or is it a bit bizarre that a religion that doesn't believe in IT has a website, a Facebook page and a YouTube account.

Or is it a case of don't do as I do, but do as I say?

Re: Tower road hall
- Rölli (26th Jun 2018 - 11:45:25)

Keith - "is it a case of don't do as I do, but do as I say"

Same could be said about many Christian church groups including the good old C of E, Roman Catholics etc!

Appalled at the local prejudice against this group

- liz (26th Jun 2018 - 13:35:54)

Rolli

The group didn't endear themselves to local people by wanting to build a huge 'Gospel Hall' with no windows on the former Bohunt Manor land. There was to be no access for anyone other than the Brethren. I think you will find that most religions - the C of E, Catholics, Muslims and Buddhists, to mention just a few, welcome visitors.

Plymouth Brethren are a group of people with a controlling, secretive and possibly dangerous hierarchy. Personal experience not prejudice.

Andrew - don't understand your post, what point are you trying to make?

Re: Tower road hall
- P Weyland (27th Jun 2018 - 09:19:29)

I don't want to start any rumours but just seen Tom Cruise walk in there with the Estate Agent.

Re: Tower road hall
- Rölli (27th Jun 2018 - 11:45:07)

Think you will find Tom Cruise is Church of Scientology! Not sure Plymouth Brethren have any celebrity members

Re: Tower road hall
- Keith (27th Jun 2018 - 12:41:13)

Rolli

I'm sorry if you interpreted my post as being prejudice - it really wasn't mean to be.

I agree that probably all religions fall foul of "don't do as I do but do as I say" at some point.

However, that wasn't the question I asked. The question was if as a religion/sect/group of followers you don't allow the use of IT then why have a website and a presence on social media and aren't you in fact committing a 'sin' in the eyes of that religion by doing so?
