Compared to countries that don't have such a scheme and every medicine and treatment has to be paid for we are, indeed, extremely fortunate. To everyone who knocks it, have you ever considered the alternative? Get real and be thankful for what we have instead of constantly wanting more

The NHS doesn’t even feature in the top 18 globally by any decent research look at the the Legatum Institute, a UK based research institute or indeed any others, we are miles behind and have been for decades on downward slope, if we finish 18th or worse in a World Cup be that cricket, football, Olympics or even a war or any measure of power or respect I doubt you all be cheering.
The NHS is awful and it’s getting worse, it’s only asset is the good people sinking within it working under pressure and fighting day after day.
In the years to come the man up the road most voted for will have sold it all off and it will be a poor version of the Americans system with us all paying the last pounds in our pockets just to attend it and get a bandage.
We are however 1st at one thing, and that is pulling our own chains.
Stiff upper lip etc

Do those in the top 18 all have to contribute to their health schemes?

The contributions to this forum are predictably depressing. It is a fact the NHS performs poorly. It is bureaucratic state monster and if it made cars it would be producing Trabants and they would cost £30k.The main problem is that no understands the difference between universal access to healthcare and how its actually provided. We DO pay for the NHS through income tax, NI, VAT etc. No one knows how much they contribute and seem to regard it as "free". Most economically developed parts of Europe have far better performing health systems. We should copy a functioning system from the best. The NHS is such a mess politicians will admit in private (I've met a few) they have no idea how to reform it to make it work better. The first step is for ordinary people (like you and me) is to accept it needs reforming without political interference. At this point I'm afraid many still harbour the illusion all can be fixed by chucking a few billion at it. Tony Blair did that and it was a failure.Time to chuck out the rhetoric and really start to think how we fund, run and improve an operation which employs over 1 million people in the UK.

Making statements the NHS is amazing just perpetuates a myth and undermines the reality, sure it’s not terrible yet but it could be a lot better if people influenced the Government that it’s critical and their position will be affected by how they decide to treat it.
Looking at the mentioned articles about the top 18 some of them are actually free at the point of access, and conversely the US system famed for being very expensive isn’t anywhere near the top of the lists of good services so am not sure what Todd’s statement is? As being free (albeit that’s also a myth, we do pay for it via taxation) has nothing to do with how good the service is nor does not being free like the US have anything to do with it. Investment is deciding factor, we the public don’t get that decision, we tick 1 box every 4-5 years for a group of people to make those decisions and we currently have a poorly performing NHS that some of you are strangely proud off and we are moving via J Hunt to an expensive US system that from looking at the US systems performance will be worse

God bless our NHS and all who work, no matter what nationality you are I for one appreciate all that you do for us, from picking us from the roadside, to making sure that I am seen if I'm having a heart attack without asking to see insurance documents.

Strangely that happens in most of Europe......with personal experience of French Paediatric intensive care, follow up in 3rd world conditions in a UK major teaching hospital paediatric Ward plus experience of serious injury in Switzerland (2counts) I can assure those who think our NHS care provision is wonderful,it isn’t. It provides 2nd rate care. It’s onlt saving grace is universal access. Something, believe it or not, is also true in France and Switzerland.
