Japanese Knotweed on Sainsburys Estate?
- oldie (11th Sep 2017  15:02:30)

Whilst wandering through the Sainsburys estate today I noticed a cordoned off area with sign saying keep away, weed control area, Japanese knotweed had apparently been treated there.

I heard it was already in Passfield because Dawn sends updates, I know it's also in other villages locally, but do we need to up our vigilance here in the village centre too?

The weed had already been spotted on either sides of Liphook, we're surrounded!

Yes, the contractors that mow the grass are doing a brilliant job of distributing the Japanese Knotweed all over the area.

The Council is given a map with 'no mow' areas.

In Passfield it is the NT land that is affected and they have been vociferous with the council about it.

The contractors are very cleverly, not told about it - and plough straight through it - leaving it all over their mowing blades to share out amongst the community!
How nice of them!

I've run out and stopped them in Passfield a number of times and they look at me like I've got two heads! I point to it and say 'do you know what that is?' None of them do!

If it is mowed it encourages root growth under the ground, it also prevents the treatment to kill it being administered which has to be injected down every hollow stem. If there are no stems - it can't be treated.

It only takes a minuscule fragment of plant, root or leaf to sprout into a new plant. When it has been transported on the mower blades they are guaranteeing its spread.

This nasty knotweed has to be removed professionally. They have to dig very deep and remove all soil to a specialist treatment firm. If this is in your garden most if not all mortgage companies will run away as it can cause severe damage to buildings by going under the foundations. No known chemical or other method works as the root system runs underground. I have not had the problem myself but saw a program on TV all about it a few years ago.
