Chiltlee/Chiltley Manor Photographs - Barry Elliott Gay (10th Feb 2009  19:11:01) My twin brother Colin [and I] were born in Liphook and because of the bombing of Portsmouth we stayed at Chiltley Manor upon our birth on 28 July 1942. As a young child I visited the manor and was shown the window to our bedroom. I believe there was an orchard in the rear of the manor. I also believe it was torn down a few years ago. Are there any recorded photographs and history of the manor that I could obtain as an email attachment or by mail? Sincerely, Barry 10 February 2009

Re: Chiltlee/Chiltley Manor Photographs - P Weyland (11th Feb 2009  19:36:22) The manor house is still there, now converted into office premises - unless of course you mean Chiltley Place which was torn down. The Liphook Preservation Society published a book on the history of Chiltley Place (authored by Anne Silver) several years ago which is no doubt still available from local outlets. I have a copy of the book if you get stuck.

Do you actually mean chiltley place, which as you say has been demolished, or would it be chiltley manor which still stands, although altered to form offices. The society may have some information on chiltley manor.

Re: Chiltlee/Chiltley Manor Photographs - Barry Gay (2nd Apr 2009  00:31:06) On 31 March 2009, I received from Duncan Long his copy of Chiltley Place and Goldenfields. The book was more than I expected, well written and full of interesting facts; now I have a record of where I was born durning the summer of 1942. From the before drawing and after drawing overlay, I can now visualize how large the estate was before all those houses were built. Duncan also attached a photo of the only part of the original building left, he believes it was the old workshop with the gate to the right being the original entrance to the house. Again I would like to thank Duncan in helping me obtain the Chiltley Place and Goldenfields book by Anne Silver. Barry

I have a friend who was born in 1944, her parents lived in Portsmouth, which obviously was under heavy attack back then. My friends birth cert just says she was born in Liphook. She remembers her mum telling her that she was born in a "posh house" in Liphook, she believe was owned by a Jewish gentleman. Could this be Chiltley manor? Regards Sheila

I am researching my family history and understand that Chiltley place was requisitioned during the war as a maternity hospital because Portsmouth was subject to heavy bombing. I know this because my Father and his family lived at Chiltley Place at the start of the war. My Grandmother, My Aunt, Uncle and Father were moved into the large house at the start of the war to ‘look after the house’. My GrandFather and Grandmother were in service with Mr Gerald Mère who owned Chiltley Place as Domestic Chauffeur and ‘housekeeper’ They were moved out of London at the start of the war. My Grandfather was separated from the rest of the family and followed Mr Mere to Gurrington House in Devon. My Father recounts tales of living in the very large house and having the wonderful grounds to play in. When the house was requisitioned they moved into the smaller 2 Chiltley cottage, which I believe has also gone, but I am not sure.

Re: Chiltlee/Chiltley Manor Photographs - D (4th Jul 2020  17:12:25) Was Chiltley Place on the site of the Berg estate? I'm assuming Chiltley Lane was the boundary. I remember the houses to the back of the Berg being built in the mid-seventies so when would Chiltley Place have been demolished?

Re: Chiltlee/Chiltley Manor Photographs - G Hutcheson (12th Jul 2020  11:10:28) Chiltley Place and the extensive grounds was where the Berg estate was built. The house and cottages were demolished but were originally accessed from Chiltley Lane.

Can anyone shed some light on GOLDENFIELDS It looks like it could have been part of Chiltley Manor or some other bigger house and seems to have a small bell tower on top of the roof. I was born in 2 Collyers Cresent just up the road from Chiltly Manor I think about mid day and I still live in liphook but the other side of the village. Irene Ellis ne Holdsworth

Re: Chiltlee/Chiltley Place - John Miller (3rd Sep 2020  12:27:57) I’d like to add myself to the list of babies born in 1943 at Chiltley PLACE, Liphook. My parents were living in Dast Cosham, Portsmouth and my father worked in the Royal Naval Dockyard, Portsmouth. I would otherwise have been born in St Mary’s or The Royal Hospital, both within bombing distance of the main target, the Dockyard. I too would love to buy a copy of the book about Chiltley Place.
