Pension and a Pint?

Pensioners in Liphook could be enjoying a pint while queuing for their pension after a popular pub told parish concillors it would be interested in running the village post office.

The Royal Anchor Pub has expresseda internet in taking on the job after hearing the news that the current post office, based in Alldays store, is due to close next month.

Manager Jez Fisher said: "It is a novel idea. I have a couple of outbuildings at the back, that is the ideal place to put a post office."

Plans to move the post office to the co-op store in Headley Road have caused outrage in the village.

Co-op, which owns Alldays, decided to sell the store and is now set to reopen the post office in its Headley Road shop.

But councillors and villagers are angry about the lack of consultation over the move. Many fear the proposed new location would be impractical for many users, especially elderly residents who rely on the vital service.

East Hampshire District Council now wants a "Stay of execution" to allow other businesses in the village to be offered the change to run the post office.

The council will now write to the post office to ask for the decision to be delayed until other options in the village have been explored.
