U3A - another year

There was a good attendance for the 11th AGM of Liphook U3A held at the Millennium Hall last Monday, 8th April.

The chairman, Bob Robinson, in his annual report stated that this year we moved from a little over 500 to a little over 600 members. We have developed some groups that were new last year, like Theatre Club and Photography and we have started some new ones; Striders, French beginners, History, Flower Arranging has re-started under new leadership and it looks as if we have a new “Pay & Play Golf” group, a third Wine Appreciation group and possibly a second French group to start soon.

Over the year we have had a range of speakers at monthly meetings. They varied from the delightful Jeanne Dolmetsch and her twin sister Marguerite playing recorders and relating them to the manners in polite society, Brian Tippett showing us some unseen aspects of Dickens characters as they progressed from page to screen, talks from the National Trust the South Downs National Park and the Saville Gardens, Fran Sandham crossing Africa without a backup team, the moving and entertaining stand in for our Christmas talk, Pauline Fitter on “The children from Chernobyl” that raised an unprompted £265 in about 10 minutes from a lower than average turnout.

The Pop-in was, as usual, a success. It was a good chance for a social gathering with free tea and cakes and an opportunity for new potential members to see us “show case” the sort of things we do. We gained 25 new members on the day and no doubt a few more have, or will follow.

We can now look forward to another year of “interesting and very interesting” monthly meeting talks and groups where we can keep learning or perhaps socialising. Keeping our brains active and for some people physical activity keeping mind and body going.

He finished his report with the same message as last year “I have often said to friends and colleagues; the day I stop learning will be the day I die. The U3A has taught me that not only is that likely to be true but I intend to use the U3A to push that date further into the distance by keeping my brain alive and kicking”

Officers elected for 2013-14 are:
Chairman – Bob Robinson,
Vice Chairman – Ray Davis,
Treasurer – Cynthia Knowles
Secretary – John McGregor

Seven Existing Committee Members were re-elected along with new man Roy Telfer

Once the business was over member Rod Minns gave an illustrated talk about his back pack tours in various countries when he was a younger man and progressing up to more recent cruise holidays. The members were very grateful to Rod for standing in at the 11th hour as the published speaker had been taken ill.
