Locals on Blue Peter

Nine students from Bohunt School in Liphook, Hampshire will appear on a special 'alternative sport' edition of the CBBC's Blue Peter on Monday 6 March, demonstrating their skills in a little known sport - Tchoukball.

The students were selected by the Tchoukball Association of Great Britain to represent the sport after their involvement in the sport at the highest level with several currently trying out for the Great Britain Under 18 squad due to compete in the European Championships in Switzerland in August 2006.

They will demonstrate the UK's fastest handball sport with 5 students from a Norfolk school also selected. The show will feature other alternative sports and give them an opportunity to try a 'skills swap' with other young people.

Steve Morris, Tchoukball coach at Bohunt School said:

"Nine students have been selected from Bohunt because of the effort they put into the game and levels of achievement they have reached.

"This will give us an excellent opportunity to showcase our exciting sport."

Tchoukball is a fast and athletic handball sport played by 2 teams of 9 players on a 40 x 20 metre court. The ball is rebound at high speed off a tightly-sprung mesh stretched across a square metal frame to score points when it contacts the floor. The opposition's defence aims to stop this by catching the ball before it touches the ground.

The sport was developed in the 1960s in Switzerland and is set to feature in the 2009 World Games in Taiwan.
