Organic food at Black Fox
- Freddie Dawkins (4th Mar 2004 - 09:59:23)
Wandered into the Black Fox last night for a meal - have not been for a few months due to pressure of work. Turned out to be my lucky day - landlord Allan Keith is converting his menu to organic-only, and had his first batch of organic beef ready and waiting.
Allan's beef has always been the best in this area - as good as my own organic beef (he says, modestly ;-) - but Allan's culinary skills are way too good to compete with.
Last night's steaks were really something. Full marks to Allan and Julie for being brave enough to go the organic route.
rgds to all here

And Big Al smacked my wrist the other night. He's not TOTALLY organic (I blame his house red for my slight confusion...) - but his beef certainly is.
Just had to go back this week and have some more to see if it was as good second time round. No doubts. Superb!

Allan failed to mention the 'Black Fox Bitter' game that is regularly played at the 'Black Fox'. It is similar to the game of 'Mornington Crescent'.
All the customers try to get Allan to tell them where Black Fox Bitter is brewed. Allan suggests that they try to guess. The customers then suggest all sorts of outlandish places apart from the correct one (Julie has already told them the answer) but never guess correctly.
It does have to be said, however, that the food (and company) is worth travelling a couple of miles out of Liphook for.

As I said in an earlier post regarding pubs of Liphook. The food in The black fox is insurpassable in the local area in my opinion. My wife is quite into Organic food and although we don't get a chance eat there as often as we would like we are looking to go there again real soon.
Keep it up, it's fantastic. I'm hungry now.

Having read the glowing reports of 'The Black Fox' and its food, my wife and I went there on Saturday 3rd April.
We arrived at 7.40pm and asked if it was possible to eat but were told that due to 'pressure in the kitchen' we would probably not be served until 9.00pm. At this time there was only one table occupied in the restaurant.
We debated moving on to the 'Rising Sun' at Milland, of which we had also heard good reports, but as it was tipping down with rain, we decided to stay and wait so placed our food order there and then.
Customers came and went into the restaurant and some finished their meals and returned to the bar. When we had not been called by 9.00 we asked when we were likely to eat only to be told that our order had not gone down to the kitchen and that they were still very busy. I checked the restaurant and found only four tables occupied.
As it was now too late to go elsewhere we decided to give it another half hour. Still no food so at 9.40, exactly two hours after we placed our order so we asked again where the food was and we were told that the order had still not gone to the kitchen. This was the last straw. We paid for our drinks, informed the lady behind the bar why we were leaving and made our exit into a cheerless night, hungry.
End of story. The quality of the food remains a mystery to me and will for some time to come. I did not expect 'Fast Food' I did however expect to be seated and fed within an hour and to be allowed to finish the meal before the landlord called time.

Paul,
I've never been to the Black Fox, so can't comment, but the best food I've ever had locally was at The Sun Inn in Rake. Not cheap...but worth every penny.

I was there also on Saturday 3/4, my wife booked, we arrived at 8ish and sat down at 8.30 for an absolutely fantastic meal. Compliments to the chef.
So maybe there is moral in there somewhere? Book.
I have also been on other occasions, not booked and never had a problem.

I also did my own reconnaissance this weekend at the Black Fox, under the cunning guise of a Sunday lunch - solely tempted by being virtually barred before turning up ;)
We booked in advance which seemed to help. IMHO its a contest between The Links, the Black Fox and the Sun Inn. The staff were polite, eager to please and friendly.
However i have to echo what Paul said - we didn't quite wait as long as that, but we were waiting for around an hour for our food. In fairness, we were warned when we booked and there was a table of 10 before us.
The overall impression i had is that the kitchen was overwhelmed even though it wasn't too full - Allan, do you do all the cooking or are there assistant chefs in there helping out? Surely one man can't cook for the entire restaurant?
The food, however, was excellent. For expensive Cordon Bleu (or whatever), its probably the Sun Inn though.
I'll give it a 8.5/10, although i'm tempted to go further because i happen to think Allan is cool.
