Article on Front Page of Today's Herald re: PCC Elections
- Kev (22nd Nov 2012 - 17:47:03)
I refer to the article under the heading "Loser slams "dirty, nasty' PCC election" on the front page of today's Herald. Leaving aside Mr Mates' anger against the voting system in general and Simon Hayes in particular, I draw the attention of the readers of Liphook Talkback to paras 18 and 19 in the third column and I quote:
"In the meantime, a complaint has been lodged against Mr Mates by Don Jerrard, the Anti-Corruption and Justice Party candidate and a Greatham and Bramshott & Liphook parish councillor."
"On Wednesday Mr Jerrard said police were probing a complaint he had made about Mr Mates and his agent, Beverley Carpenter. He claims that 'they distributed material which is totally untrue about me with the deliberate intention of reducing my vote' " .
Well, Mr Jerrard now you know what it feels like to have things done and said about oneself which one perceives not to be true. You are getting a taste of your own medicine. I would just say this to you - why don't you take your own advice, advice which you have metered out on many occasions to the hapless people you have traduced and spearheaded in the past, under the mantle of your so called Justice and Anti-Corruption Party (The Herald got the name the wrong way round incidentally) and that advice is "If it's not true, why don't they sue?" So Mr Jerrard go ahead and sue, put your money where your mouth is.

Mr Mates had better take care, as Don Jerrard is a man of
principle and when he says he will SUE IF IT IS NOT TRUE,
I for one believe him, because Don IS a man of principle.

If Mr Mates had been that popular he would have won on second votes- the whole exercise was a waste of taxpayers money! I cannot believe that at age 78 Mr Mates would have been able to devote the time and energy to the job.

Another total shambles by this Government as far as I'm concerned. The Country has already lost 2 Senior Chief Constables because of it - over 50 years experience of Policing and Policing Leadership gone at the drop of a hat.
Badly thought out, badly explained, badly executed and badly made up excuses for why 85% of the Country didn't vote.
As for Mates, don't know how he had the audacity to stand at all, let alone his age and considering why he had to vacate his previous Govt job!

Whilst I do agree that the recent Police and Crime Commissioner elections have been rather a waste of time and this has been comprehensively demonstrated by the fact that the majority of the electorate don’t actually agree with this new appointment and/or don’t care, Kev’s posting, although under the heading of the article in The Herald, was not about the elections or indeed the suitability of Mr Mates to stand as a candidate.
Kev’s posting drew our attention to the fact that Don Jerrard has made a complaint about Mr Mates and his agent Beverley Carpenter to the effect that they were instrumental in circulating untrue statements about Mr Jerrard. Kev rightly said that as this is the sort of thing that Mr Jerrard has done to many people over the years, why doesn’t he take his own advice which is “if it’s not true, why don’t they sue?” Pete seems to think he will sue so as Kev says “Time will tell”. So let’s stick to the point of the posting and not muddy the waters over whether the elections should have been held in the first place and whether Mr Mates should have stood. That should be addressed under another Thread. Mr Jerrard is a councillor currently sitting on two parish councils and if he is accusing Mr Mates and his agent of circulating untrue statements he should be very sure of his ground so I, like Kev, do hope that he will stand by his principles and if they are guilty, sue the parties implicated.

Val do you not think that although your posting is from "Val" you yourself are putting your comments out and Mr Jerrard could decide what you write is damaging to his reputation? It is easy enough to think you are safe but I P addresses can be traced!

I am posting this letter here as I do not believe there is a snowball's chance in hell that the Herald Group will reprint it in their letters column.
| | Letters To The Editor,
Liphook Herald,
114-115 West Street,
Farnham,
Surrey
GU9 7HL
25 November 2012
Sir,
Further to your leader in last week’s Liphook Herald, “Loser Slams ‘Dirty, Nasty’ PCC Election” I find it incredulous that Michael Mates, a politician of long standing, campaigner in nine elections, should take issue with the second preference voting system adopted by the whole country in the election of Police and Crime Commissioners.
It should be noted that despite David Cameron’s statement that the new Police and Crime Commissioners should not be political appointments, that did not stop him personally delivering a Conservative candidate’s manifestos, and it is also worth noting that, along with other candidates representing political parties, Mr Mates’ election costs were paid by the war chests of the political parties they represented. Mr Mates has called Simon Hayes a ‘turn coat’. Could it be that the Conservative party had already pre-selected Mr Mates as their front runner leaving Mr Hayes with no other choice but to stand as an independent and, as a result, pay his own election costs.
The reason why Mr Mates did not get sufficient votes to elect him may have something to do with his advanced age of 78. Even High Court Judges would not be appointed at that age.
As for Mr Mates’ allegation of ‘mud slinging’ in your leader and his derogatory comments towards Simon Hayes and other candidates I am put in mind of ‘people in glasshouses’.
Sincerely
Paul Robinson | |

H, are you speaking for yourself or for Mr Jerrard? Either way your posting feels to me very like a threat. If it is a threat then you are wasting your time. I will not be bullied or intimidated. I stand for justice, honesty, fairness to all, transparency and accountability. Perhaps you could tell me in what way what I have said in my posting is damaging Mr Jerrard\'s reputation? If you do not respond to my question I shall assume that it is because you cannot. I always tell the truth. I do not tell lies.

I'm very glad Mr Mates wasted the Tory ticket in this election. And I'm delighted he lost. It is a great reminder that, even though the political class think we're all idiots, we aren't. People like him and John Prescott merely cheapen democracy by trying to get us to assume they have some sort of special ability to represent us. It's lovely to see them put in their place.

Re: Article on Front Page of Today's Herald re: PCC Elections
- Don Jerrard (3rd Dec 2012 - 11:01:03)
A number of people have asked me to reply to this thread, and I have therefore decided to do so.
Firstly I would like to thank the 24,443 residents of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight who voted for me as first preference in the PCC election, and for the even greater number who put me down as second preference.
As many people are aware I had paid a considerable sum of money to have my flyer delivered to each of the 488,000 houses in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, but as far as I can see none at all were delivered. Had they been delivered many more people would have realised what this election was about, and I might even had won.
However I am delighted that the other independent, Simon Hayes, was the winner – he is a very good man and needs all our support in an almost impossible job.
Secondly I would like to make it clear that the JAC Party decided to run a candidate as long ago as February. That was at least three months before we had the slightest inkling that Mr Mates might be a candidate. Whether the idea of a PCC is a good one only time will tell. What I can say is that the old system of a Police Authority made up of friends and cronies of the senior police officers was not transparent and was just not working. That is why many crimes were not being investigated at all, or sometimes covered up, not least because some of them were being carried out by people who were friends, or at least acquaintances of members of the police authority.
Thirdly I would like to make it clear that my solicitors have issued and served proceedings for defamation on some people who have said things about me which are not true. I will not reveal who those people are until the appropriate public apology has been made or the matter goes to court, although the Claim Form, issued in the High Court in London is a public document.
Fourthly the Herald approached me on Wednesday 21 November and asked if it was correct that I had complained to the police about comments made about me by Mr Mates and his agent, Beverley Carpenter during the election. I do not know where the Herald had got this information, but I confirmed that I had made a complaint about what Mr Mates had said during the live Radio Solent debate on 9 November, and did have an appointment with the police to complain about what had been written about me by Beverley Carpenter shortly afterwards.
I do not yet know who had told Mrs Carpenter things about me which are wholly untrue and extremely libellous. However I told the Herald that unless I receive an apology and an offer of substantial damages for what was written about me I will be bringing further proceedings for defamation, and my solicitors have already been instructed to prepare the proceedings.
And finally please be assured that any damages which I may obtain after payment of my solicitors costs will be donated either to local charities or used to fund the JAC Party so that we can continue our work in seeking justice for the victims of abuse of power by local and national politicians and government. That was why I stood in the election as a JAC Party candidate.
If anyone wants to speak to me directly to discuss anything my previous offer still stands – I do not hide behind anonymity and my contact details are freely and publicly available.
