Royal Anchor
- Paul Straffon (19th Aug 2007 - 15:27:49)
When will the owners of the Royal Anchor pub redecorate the old smoking section.
If you are a non smoker and just want a drink you have nowhere to sit as all the non-smoking seats are normally used by diners.
The old smoking section smells of smoke and as a non-smoker i cannot tolerate this area.

Paul,
If you hate the bit you can sit in, what is it about the pub that you like? You could try another.

I keep hearing complaints from people that now the dastardly smokers have exiled into the wilderness, their pubs have an unpleasant smell of B.O. which wasn't noticeable before.....serves them right IMO ;)

SMOKING - very strange product to promote as a deodorant!!!!. I also heard comments at the weekend that people notice the 'smell' of some loos - that otherwise would have been masked. ( I have always noticed it), Its a good opportunity for pubs etc to up their hygine issues. I have totally enjoyed visiting a few public places over the past 3 weeks - something I have not been interested in doing for a number of years!!. I think smokers have had the freedom for too long and its about time the other half of the population enjoyed it too!!. IMO.
PS Maybe the extra 'sweating' is caused by stressed smokers, who have to move if their desire is so great to smoke in a few hours.

No! No! Sue, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you.
It's quite obvious to me, none of these unpleasant pongs are coming from the smokers, who are all now out enjoying the fresh air provided by pub car parks and road side seating.
It must be coming from what you call 'the other half' now in full occupation of the inside surely ;)

Sorry - totally disagree. Smokers by the pure fact of the smell have a very unpleasant odour about them!!. It doesn't mean they do not have BO either - and it too would be fair to comment that some non-smokers (infact in general some people) are less than careful on their approach to personal hygine.
But to say that because smokers are now outside to puff, the smell comes from those who do not! Surely they have to come inside to carry out the basic requirements of eating or purchasing drink - so they will contribute, wouldn't they??? Bringing in the smell of the 'after effects'. It is a known fact that smoking effects smell and taste - perhaps some are not aware of their own smell for that reason!. LOL

Wouldn't like to say who is responsible for the pong but nightclub owner Luminar has had to introduce perfumed air conditioning in its clubs to hide the unpleasant smells previously disguised by cigarette smoke....

im a smoker but totally agree with the smoking ban. I too have noticed some wiffiiee pongs in some pubs but at least they are not damaging like breathing in ciggie smoke.
Although I smoke, I have never liked eating in a pub when someone is lighting 1 up, wierd as it sounds coming from a smoker.
Also my other half has noticed that after a night out, my clothes don't reek of smoke and although it'll be a while before i give up completely, I am cutting down on cigs since the ban came in . Surely a good thing.
So lets give our local pubs and eateries our support and not complain too much about the after effects of the smoking ban...they can't do it all overnight!

Anon,
Good on you - I wish you luck - my hubby is also on no smoking, so I realise how difficult it can be!!
I am sure most people will put up with the 'change' in pub smells. Which have always been there, but masked by the overpowering smoke. After all I haven't heard of death caused by smelling B.O. .... but if anyone out there does ..........

Didn't take long for the anti smoking brigade to jump on here, only surprise it was not sooner.
Called in a pub not far away the other week, five people in the whole pub, pub empty and all five of us out in the garden having a smoke and a pint, says it all really.( By the way four of that five, we all arrived in the same car).
Let the honeymoon period evaporate, then wait until the hard economics kick in.
Never smoked in a restaurant, nor shopping area, cinema etc etc. But did enjoy a drink and a smoke I will admit.
Now I get told even though I've brought, taxed and insured my own works vehicle can;t smoke in that even if on my own. Yeah right!
Supposed to display signs in my own workshops and not allowed to smoke. No problem, new signs in position stating "Public Not Allowed Smoking In Progress".
I can agree with the majority of places where smoking is banned and fully understand the reasons why, but where next will it happen. Probably in my own house or garden I expect.
The next issue would be the usual burden to the NHS from all us nasty smokers. If thats the case then I vote for the banning of alcohol. Pop up the casualty department on a Friday or Saturday night and see how many smoking related incidents are admitted. I bet there won't be many patients up there had their face opened up by a Benson & Hedges or some clown taking on the whole world because he's had 15 roll ups.

Steve,
Ban alcohol too? That would solve the pub smells problem entierly. What Pub?
In all seriousness I also agree that some of the rules about smoking (your own business van) are daft. I also believe that if an individual chooses to smoke that is their right - BUT not to subject that upon those that have chosen not too. Smoke youselves silly, but what this smoking ban does do is make it safer for everyone. I also think that parents smoking within a living area of children have the responsibility to do it elsewhere too. I was brought up with puffing parents (1 fags, 1 pipe) and on occasions had to remove myself from the one heated room with telly, to sit in a freezing 8 x 10 box room with book, just to be able to breath normally!!. So for those to have to sit outside with company really isn't so bad!.

Well said Steve,
How about banning chewing gum as well as alchohol, that should help to clean up the environment.
Anybody else have any ideas on pratices that should be banned by BB ?

I would ban the EU as they seem to be the source of all the barmy laws that cause all these problems in the first place!!!!!
