Free Loft and Cavity wall insulation
- A. Ryan (16th Nov 2012 - 15:01:16)
Having free cavity wall insulation at the end of November. On speaking to the the chap who came round, he remarked that they thought they would be inundated, but so few have taken up the offer. As this was a Hampshire council proposition I am surprised .He told me the utility companies have put money away for this. Seems odd more people haven't done this.

We had it done last winter and it's made a big difference to the temperature in the house, favourably obviously, so can't recommend it enough. As it's free it's crazy not to go ahead and have it done.

Is there no fee at all? Is there certain requirements to get it free. Who do you contact?
Thanks

We recently moved into a new place with very little loft insulation (yes even this day and age!) but had no worries as knew the free offer was still available. The house already had cavity wall insulation.
They came around, checked everything and said we qualified (nothing to do with age, income or being a home owner but just how much insulation you have in the loft) and booked us in for 80sqmt of insulation at 270mm thick.
The chap who arrived couldn't have been better (from Dyson), very helpful and very clean and tidy. Would highly recommend anyone checking out the Insulate Hampshire website and applying for it. I can confirm it didn't cost us a penny!
My father had cavity wall insulation installed under the same scheme.

There are certain types of house which do not qualify for this free offer but it is worth checking out I have looked into this and was told my house would not qualify because it would require a roof ladder. There are other caveats but most energy companies offer this now.

Yes it is free. Try www.insulatehampshire.co.uk or phone 08009520037 The Insulate Hampshire Team to see if they are still doing it. I had a man called Dave Crozier from A&M Insulations come round to check our house. There are also other companies too I believe . He explained that the government are asking the utility companies to reduce their carbon footprint. Money has been set aside for this. There has not been enough advertising of this so people are unaware.

Now I've read this I will contact them.
I think the reason people haven't contacted them is because we are so use to being weary of things "for free". As everyone is always telling me, if it seems to good to be true it probably is.
There is always a catch.

Those were my my words precisely, but for once they were true. My house is Edwardian so thought there might be a problem, but seems all is okay. This should have been made more aware of.

Just to reiterate check junk mail and make sure you do not apply to a company that charges.

I would exercise caution where cavity wall insulation is concerned. The cavity is there to provide air space between the inner and outer walls. If you fill the space, it provides a means for moisture from the outside to cross to the inside and it could also prevent the walls from "breathing" thus allowing condensation to build and cause damp problems inside.

Janet you are quite correct about cavity walls, but moisture will only get in if you have significant cracks or bits of mortar missing. If so you must get this repaired or rainwater could get in and possibly rot the metal ties that hold the two walls together, especially in some of the cheaper non galvanised ones (a lot of cheap 70s housing in Liphook!)

Another point to consider: If your house wiring is very old, i.e. the dodgy rubber-covered type, there is a risk of fire if it is denied ventilation by being covered with loft insulation. This can turn an existing hotspot into a glowing source of ignition! Hopefully that old wiring will have been replaced years ago.
The modern PVC-covered cable (usually white or grey) is very stable and reliable unless it's been damaged by abrasion or impact.
If in any doubt, get it checked by an electrician. If the worst happened and you hadn't had it checked, your insurer might refuse to pay up.
