Wildlife

Does anyone have some expert knowledge about butterflies?

I've seen numerous, smallish, white butterflies with very dark, small, purple spots in fields alongside the A3 at the edge of the village. Never seen them before.

Does anyone know what they are?

They're moths

Could be a:

Small Blue (Cupido minimus)

or

Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus)?

Google image them and see...

Thanks, Rhys. Neither of them.

"S" - any more detail you can add?

Freddie,

Could it be a Male Common Blue, or an extra spotty Small White Male?

There is a lady employed by Hampshire purely for butterflies, her name is Lynn Fomiston I could search out her phone number if you like! She is the real expert and led a butterfly walk at Bentley last year which I went on which was very informative. I have an old book at home I could lend you also if you dont mind waiting a while.

Hi, Eneida, Everyone here -

Small White is the nearest I can place it.

But all the ones I saw - and there must have been 20 or more individuals - had more dark dots on. Maybe they vary a fair bit in amount of markings?

And no, I was not driving slowly, thank you! I know my Land Rover's nearly as old as me but I was walking at the time!!!

Barbara - thanks for that. I'll get in touch via HCC.

btw - I did post a warning about adders in Millar's fields beside the A3 bridge last week on Jayne's thread about deer eating plants. They, the adders, were out in force on Monday in the sunshine. I noticed the horses have been moved well away and hobbled on the other side of the field - not just for grazing purposes I imagine.

Thanks for all the info - I'll let you know if the butterflies are not Small Whites.

Hang on folks have I missed something here.
There is a lady employed by Hampshire (CC)? just for butterflies!
Bet you don't see that job advertised, if correct!
Someone tell me this can't be so, please.

Try going to your local library - they have good reference books you could look at - or the internet?
