Royal Surrey County Hospital
- liz (15th Jun 2007 - 11:48:04)

Those who signed the e-petition regarding the threatened cuts or closure will have received the following reply:

number-10.gov.uk/output/...

The response would be fine if the RSCH was a cottage hospital and not a major unit and centre of excellence in some areas itself. Leaving a major university town with no major hospital or A&E of its own seems like madness.

I checked this and am very concerned. The problem with these e-petitions is that the 10 Downing Street response can be anonymous which makes it easier for the government to be determined to push along with their intentions regardless. The response is sort of "oh well, good point but we're closing it anyway" and this was the same with the petition regarding car usage tax. It is easier to put a resolve across as there is no confrontation with real human protesters to contend with. What's the next step?

Liz,
Although it probably doesn't help the RSCH cause much, I was interested to read an article this week by the Head of the Defence Medical Services, explaining why a dozen or so military hospitals have been closed in as many years, Haslar being the last one. The thrust of his argument was that to offer the depth of specialist care now available any hospital needs to provide for a huge population ie milions of (potential) patients means you will have staff with almost any concievable skill - and (in this case) as the armed forces are now only 200,000 people they can't justify a single miltary hospital.
I know that this is providing healthcare by applying business principles only, and I'm sure the RSCH campaign will have formulated its answer accordingly, but it strikes me that it is only likely to be successfull if it is argued in the same terms as the decision which was originally made to close the RSCH was formulated.
I hope this helps.
