Chinook disturbance
- Tracey H (8th Jun 2007 - 14:26:47)

Has anyone else noticed that for the past two nights, Chinooks have been flying over in the early hours of the morning? Are they allowed to do this?

I am used to them buzzing over in the late evening as we are going to bed. But what excuse do they have for doing this - and waking us up - at 2 and 3 in the morning?

I am near the centre of Liphook, so goodness knows what it must be like for the poor residents of Griggs Green, right next to the landing strip.

If there is sufficient feedback maybe we could lodge a formal complaint.

You can complain but you are unlikely to get any response - not even an acknowledgement that there was any Chinook activity in the area! However previous 'bouts of activity' have never lasted very long.

spoke to a friend of mine who is in the army, apparently a big exercise on at the moment

Low level night flying is a fairly regular occurrence down here in Griggs Green, especially after the Chinook’s got fitted with night vision capability a few years ago. It’s something I had a hand in, so can’t complain really, but those Chinook's really do make the windows shake in their frames sometimes. I’ve often wondered if there are any restrictions on when they can fly, but it would seem not.

Yeah, well I reckon the one that nearly popped in for a cup of tea the other night must have had trouble with his night vision. One sugar or two I shouted as he hovered on the bloody tv aerial.
You would think that with all the land the Johnny Machine Gun Gang own they would fly around and hover to their hearts content over there.
Another thing springs to mind, having worked over at Odiham the other year and looking round very closely at one of those Chinooks, there is no way I would go up in one and am always worried when I hear one flying my way. In the words of Blue Peter, here's one I made earlier with some sticky back tape, a redundant loo roll coupled up to a sqeezy bottle. Sleep well folks.

They were probably using your house as a waypoint to navigate by. The problem with using the land they have is that it is probably lacking in large structures such as houses to use as waypoints. They use my house to get lined up with the runway for a low level approach. Or, perhaps they were testing the infra-red camera to count the number of “hostiles” that were making a cup of tea.

So with all the technology available today, ie Night Vision, Infra Red, Computor Power, Sat Nav and the A to Z. The chappie sat up the front steering still has to find his way to Weavers Down turning right over my house, straight over the Little Chef and turn left at the Deers Hut. Makes you wonder what would happen in low cloud cover, mind you at the height Top Gun Junior was at the other night I think it would need a low ground mist to put him off.

Normally army movements are posted in the herald to notify everyone.

They have to train somewhere and as we are close to longmoor .........

Just be glad you do not live at Odiham it would be even noisier......

But I sure Trevor sells some decent ear defenders for those of a sensative nature. tee hee hee

I did get a bit worried the other night. They were flying so low that I heard one of the crew say, "It's bloody cold in here, can someone turn the fans off.."

I know its a pain but I do support our troops, they have very little support from our (wonderful) government.

I know a lot of people do support them, Hopefully they will be finished in a few days...

To answer Steve's question, even with all the available technology, pilots still prefer to use the evidence of their own eyes and will use landmarks and railway lines etc to navigate. Think of it as our own private airshow and it doesn't seem that bad. Sleep well Liphook.
