Went to try the burgers after all the hype on this site, to find it closed. Time to give it another try.

Re: THE LINKS
- gen (30th May 2007 - 15:16:26)
Went to try the burgers today.
Quite honestly, we were a bit disappointed after all the hype in other posts. The burgers were quite big, a uniform grey throughout and although tender, seemed to be without any seasoning at all. They would have been more appetizing if they were a little crispy on the outside and a little less well-done and seasoned properly. They were served with quite a tasty topping of bacon and cheese, and some rather soggy 'home cut chips' that appeared to be small potatoes cut into 4 pieces - I suspect they were parboiled - and served with a little bit of salad garnish. At nearly £12, they seemed expensive.
The service was willing - there seemed to be a member of staff for every two customers - and they were happy to turn the loud music down so that we could talk.
Other people were trying the moules, which I wish I'd had instead, might give it one more try.

i went in the links today and also had a burger which cost me only £10.95 mine was outstanding, the chips was amazing and the real thing proper chips...
mine was well seasoned dont know what jen was talking about she must of had to much wine which numbed her taste buds & made her think that her burger cost £12 pounds...

I have the bill here - £31.60 for two - 2 beefburgers, 2 SMALL glasses of wine and 2 coffees.
Our beefburgers were exactly as I said, but we had ours lunchtime when perhaps not too many people were ordering them, maybe it makes a difference. Could have been defrosted I suppose, although unlikely I would have thought.
We went there expecting to enjoy them, so we didn't go trying to pick holes in the food, they are our nearest pub and we'd like them to be good, believe me.

- nat (31st May 2007 - 10:31:14)
right,
i work at the links and your burgers were £10.95 each your glass of wine was £3.45 give ore take 5p depending which it was and your coffee would have been about £1.50 each. the burgers are most certainly NOT frozen (which is why they take a while to come out to the table) and are a great seller at the pub. what you have to realise gen is that food is subjective. and if you order something knowing your not that keen on it you already have an opinion.
i would also like to state to others that gen ate off the links favourite menu which is availble at lunch times along side the main menu for those who want something larger than the lunch time menu which offers a great selection of ciabattas, recently added panninis and selction of side orders again these are made fresh to order.
dont get me wrong guys im not bigging it up cos i work there just want to get the facts across. westy and mary have taken a lot of time over the new menu and sourced some great local suppliers. with the new decor and being totally non smoking its great for dinning.

Hi Nat,
Just to clarify what you've said in your post....when you say 'totally non-smoking' do you mean outside as well?
If so, that's goodbye to The Links for me :(

You can get a cheaper burger in central London. What is this £11 (give or take 5p) burger made of? and how many does it feed?

Burgers aside - we all had other meals - we couldn't see much change inside The Links except for the redecoration. Did we miss something?

Re: THE LINKS
- gen (1st Jun 2007 - 16:25:40)
I have enjoyed burgers in the past, but they have to be crisp on the outside and not too well done and seasoned. I still think the ones I had were probably not as good as when loads of people are ordering them.
But the mussels looked delicious, I shall definitely go back to try them. I always give a restaurant a couple of tries before writing it off. It was good not having smoke all round me as I'm suffering with a touch of seasonal asthma at the moment. Well done, Links, for setting an example.

Well I went to The Links for lunch today, for the first time since the sale, and from the comments I've read on this site, I really didn't know what to expect!!
However the refurbishment has been very well done and I think it looks even classier than before....the staff were just as friendly and helpful as ever.... the food was just as good.....and I didn't see anybody with 'tattooes' :D:D
So it's still my favourite pub in Liphook by far!!

- P McNamara (24th Dec 2007 - 14:32:06)
Being a bit of a laggard on this sort of thing, I ventured to the 'new' Links a mere fortnight ago.
No itemised bill presented at the end of our meal, the waitress said our bill totalled £93. Upon checking, the correct amount was approx. £27 less that this. I was told the till was to blame, no apology was offered by the staff.
Never got an itemised bill, just a Switch receipt. I wonder if anyone else had an attempted overcharge?

- Paul Robinson (27th Dec 2007 - 19:19:39)
Well that really is taking the biscuit.
Quite frankly at nearly ten quid for two large glasses of Riocha I think we are all being short changed!
Complicate it with a food order and not presenting an itemised bill sounds like a licence to print money.

- Laura Thacker (30th Dec 2007 - 12:17:57)
Dear All,
Thank you to those of you who have made some great comments, it shows our efforts are playing off. Rest assured this will continue....
I would like to clarify the issue with the overcharging comment. The tills did actually crash at that point and an apology was made on the night, the gentlemen in question was not overcharged as I dealt with it myself. I did also ring him the next day to apologise again as it was a very busy night and I felt that my apologises might not have come across sincerely enough.
If anyone has an issue in the future with The Links, I would appreciated if you would come directly to myself so that I can deal with the situation and not for it to be placed on this website.
My aim is very simple, I would like to make The Links the best pub in the area for you all to enjoy. So lets support each other.
I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year and have a great one.
Kindest Regards
Laura Thacker

A discussion forum is always going to be just that - a place for people to discuss things.
You are happy to use this forum to propmost yourselves so I'm afraid the negative must come with the positive.
This will always be the case whether or not you enjoy the attention.

Re: THE LINKS
- Barbara Easton (2nd Jan 2008 - 19:11:36)
I agree with Dawn. The Links try to advertise on this forum so obviously asking what our feedback is will invite comment good or bad! The English race are very reluctant to complain in public for fear of attracting attention, or making a fuss. How many times have I had an indifferent meal which was overpriced, the waitress arrives- everything ok- mmm yes thank you! What I really wanted to say was- it is not really very good I think you could do better- but then is it fair to expect every pub to provide home made food? Some do manage it and others do not, some manage only the main course, and the starters and puddings are bought in.

Having had Christmas Day lunch at The Links this year I have to say that we were all very impressed with the food and the service was second to none. The staff were great fun and didn't hurry us at all. The costs for wine, port etc were also very reasonable where I guess some places would have taken advantage and bumped up the prices. Thanks to everyone at The Links!

Re: THE LINKS
- P McNamara (7th Jan 2008 - 09:17:18)
Just to clarify.
On the night I was asked to overpay my bill by c. £27, the waitress did not apologise. She also did not offer an itemised bill. Additionally, it was myself and my wife who noticied the overcharge and asked the staff about it, not the other way around.
Subsequently, someone from The Links phoned me at home, stated that the tills had crashed, and apologised. I accept and am grateful for the apology.
However, the simple fact of the matter is that in my mind, I was asked to overpay a non-itemised bill and on the night the staff-member in question did not apologise.
Regards,
P McNamara

Sir,
All I can do is apologise again, it was I busy time for us (not an excuse i know) and unfortunately computers do crash. The problem was sorted out for you on the night and I will speak to the member of staff in question, as I was standing next to her at the time.
These things happen in life & business and all I can is apologise....
Kindest Regards

Re: THE LINKS
- Sue W (8th Jan 2008 - 10:11:11)
I have read both comments about the overcharge carefully, and firstly my comments are no reflection on the Links, BUT more of a question of a customers right to have an itemised bill for ANYTHING they have purchased, if they requst one. I would think the meal they had was satisfactory and seems the only problem was, what they had and what they were being charged for. I find it strange that the staff must have worked out the bill on something, so why not produce that for paying the bill.
As a whole we do not fully check bills - in case we are seen to be 'tight' or 'penny pinching' - But at £27 everyone should be careful. I understand technology can have its faults and there will always be human error, but if a full bill is presented there can never be a problem, but we must check it first!!.

Re: THE LINKS
- Laura Thacker (8th Jan 2008 - 11:02:12)
Dear Sue,
I totally agree, the bill was shown on our computer screens which is why are were able to sort out the bill in the end. It was not a case that we couldn't show the customer the bill but that we just couldn't print it off. I would happily print out a copy of the bill on my back office system today to put his mine at rest. The other issue was that this gentleman’s table had got confused with another, it was not the case that we tried to over charge him but that it simply got confused with another table. This happened due to us moving around tables to accommodate the different size Christmas bookings we had and also a training issue that I have now sorted out.
We always provide costumers with copies of bills to check before paying, its just good business. It was simply a case at that moment in time I had a problem with the printers. It was at about 10.30pm at night on a Saturday and I tried everything I could to sort out this issue as quickly as possible.
The Links is part of a very well respected company and one that I personally love working for. Therefore I would do anything that would reflect badly on them or the pub. I would not deliberately try and over charge someone as its not in my nature and is also something that I would hate to happen to me.
I hope this helps.
Kindest Regards
Laura
