Sainsburys letter
- Sue W (23rd May 2007 - 21:16:26)
To you all
I have had a reply from Sainsburys to my letter sent over 6 weeks ago. I have deliberated in posting this for a fortnight, but now feel that it is right to do so, as we have 'gone to press' on this subject. I feel that the reply didnt answer any of the points that I raised - but it did include some 'interesting' comments - so here is a few paragraphs for you to chew over.
'We are aware of the part we play in local communities. We aim to be a good neighbour both to those who live near our stores and to local businesses who we trade alongside.
When many of our competitors are focusing on non-food ranges, we are clear that customers come to our store primarily to to their weekly grocery shop. That is why we never compromise our food offer and only include complementry non-food ranges when space permits.
Whenever we plan investments we always ask our customers what facilities and ranges they would like. At Liphook, our customers wanted a broader range of non-food products, without jeopardising the food range. The non-food range of goods is complementary to the food range'
'Since opening, the feedback from our customers has been very positive.'
Perhaps the feedback is not a true reflection of the people of Liphook, as many are now doing their main shop elsewhere, and how is bedding, cards, paper, stationary, hoovers, dvd, Toys & Clothes etc complementary to food??
To even the balance if you feel that the above comments are not true to you - may I suggest that a letter to the following should state this.
Mr Justin King
Group Chief Executive
Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd
33 Holburn
London
EC1N 2HT
Regards
Sue & Trevor Liphook Hardware & Housewares

what is a true reflection of 'the village' then? if a full car park and full store are not representative of the people of liphook then i don't know what is.

I take it that you asked them if they were going to sell household goods, they said no and then went off and sold them anyway. Not very community spirited of them but I suppose the rules of competition exclude fairness and supermarkets are famous for it.

The following article by Zac Goldsmith (prospective MP for Richmond Park) illustrates the plight of Barnes village - a haven of small independent retailers that has, up to now, resisted attempts by the big boys to build in the village. Apparently Sainsbury’s have acquired a large slice of land in the centre of Barnes and applied to build a large store. Despite local planning refusal, the decision was overturned on appeal. Now a plebiscite is to be held amongst the 8500 residents (similar in size to Bramshott & Liphook). Although this will not be legally binding, they are hoping it will put enough pressure on to stop the store being built.
I wonder, if a similar plebiscite were held in Liphook, how many would vote to have Sainsbury’s removed. Not a majority I suspect.

Mike,
no-one is after Sainsburys being removed!!. The question really is did we need them stocking all the new products?. Especially those available already from at least 6 other outlets?

I most certainly would not vote to have Sainsburys removed!!! They're one of the reasons I moved to Liphook in the first place.
And in any case, if they disappeared tomorrow, all that would happen is that people would have to travel to Tescos in Bordon and 200 Liphookians would be out of work......not a brilliant outcome IMO.
Why don't some people just accept that Sainsburys are here and get over it....this boring argument just goes on and on....

I hope our own parish council have taken it upon themselves to contact the village, who now have a sainsburys amoungst them, and offer a guiding hand in how to deal with additional planning permissions. After all your experiences would cost them nothing, but could save them alot!.

I wonder how many of the good people of Barnes use one of the "many large supermarkets within easy reach of Barnes" ??? NIMBY comes to mind ;)

So Candyfloss some of the staff at Liphook's Sainsburys live in Bordon do they? Well not exactly difficult to work that one out is it? They would be out of a job too I suppose, if Sainsburys disappeared overnight....what did you expect me to say?
