Hampshire Scouts on top of the world
- Grahame (22nd May 2007 - 21:29:50)
Now for some good news. I am not sure how many people are aware that Hampshire Scouts finally achieved their aim of having Scouts on top of the world during the centenary year. At 6:40 yesterday morning, three Hampshire Scouts finally set foot on the summit of Mount Everest.
Several members of Liphook Scouts have over the last few years been involved in some of the pre-planning expeditions to Nepal. Two of our ex Scouts, Dan Jordan and Andy Smith, were chosen to be part of the summit team but Dan had to drop out early on because health problems and Andy, unfortunately had to forgo his attempt at the summit due an eye problem.
We wish the team a safe return and we should try and use this acheivement as an example to other young people.

What an achievement!. As you say good news for the younger members of our society. Too many people moan about them, it is another example where 'teenagers/youths' are not all the same!!

Absolutely amazing! It is truly inspirational to hear of such tales of derring-do.
I recall being sat in geography lessons in school in the early 60s being regailled with the exploits of Hillary and Sherpa Tensing's first success. Brilliant stuff, it was. Fired the imagination of a country lad no end!
Lots of would-be conquerors of Everest have since achieved the distinction of reaching the summit. Many more have failed for a variety of reasons, but you must take your hats off to them for trying. Most aspirants today raise many hundreds of thousands of £s in sponsorship for charitable causes, despite the fact that an attempt costs each climber around £20,000. That is simply heroic.
Well done the lads from the scouts, and if you are interested in finding out more news of other attempts going on right now, log on to www.jagged-globe.co.uk for more open mouthed reading!
