Eyesore on Midhurst Road
- Katy (20th May 2007 - 08:33:41)

HI

Does anyone know who owns the boarded up eyesore near the pet shop and Limelight Accounting on Midhurst Road?

I moved here in 2000 and it has been boarded up since then with little sign of change. Apparently it had planning permission to be converted in to 2 flats but now seems to be being used for storage of household furniture. As the conversion has "started" i.e. a new door had been put on, there is apparently no obligation to complete it within a set timescale. As such the poor people of Liphook have to put up with this boarded up mess.

If the owner is using it as storage I would rather he remove the boards and put blinds in the windows instead, surely a better option and much more in keeping with the surrounding area.

I believe it may be owned by a vet from Midhurst but am not too sure...........if this is the case lucky old him living in Midhurst and not having to look at this eyesore every day!

If anyone can shed any light on this or encourage him to improve this site I for one would be delighted

Thanks

Katy

I understand where you are comming from, it does seem to me that there are a large number of properties, not all Business that are not pleasant to the eye. My pet hate is the fencing - or rather stringing on a property close to the new crossing in Headly Road, its awful, but how can one person tell someone else what to do?. Its a bit like the suggestions of a painting party for station road businesses - permission must be granted from the owners, as people just cant do what they like with someone elses property. Perhaps the new Parish Council members - together with the existing ones, should seriously concentrate on the whole of existing Liphook, instead of planning for future developments. (Unfortuately new developments are where the money is!!!)

It does indeed belong to a vet, a very good one, and a decent chap in my opinion but I warn you he can be prickly and wont appreciated being nagged.

Thanks for your replies. I am sure he is a decent chap and as such in a decent act to the decent people of Liphook he may decently choose to pull his finger out and clean up his eyesore!

As fo prickly maybe he has been treating too many hedgehogs????

That's right Katy, you tell him sweetheart. But don't say you weren't warned, and if you tell him to his face or over the phone you wont have the benefit of a moderator to censor or delete his reply. People are not under any legal obligation to make their property aesthetically pleasing last I checked. Get over it.

Dear mammal,

I am referring to your post to Katy above, (with apologies to other readers as the following is at a tangent to the issue in question).

I assume it was not your intention to offend, and (especially if you are of the older generation), it may just be the way you talk to all women to show you are friendly, but can I just politely mention that calling a female "sweetheart" is for many of us, at best irritating and at worst patronising.

I am very much anti political correctness for its own sake, but like it or not, words have great power and the same word can be used for both good and ill purposes depending on the intention of the writer.

I was called "sweetheart" in a reply to a post on this site about a year ago, and my instinctive reaction on reading it was "I am NOT your sweetheart, you don't even know me, so terms of endearment are not appropriate".
I felt rightly or wrongly that the word was being used to imply that I was just a fluffy feeble minded female who didn't know what I was talking about. It felt like an effort to put me in my place ...... implying that I should go off and play and stop worrying my little head over the issue in question. I felt it subliminally implied that I was not entitled to express an opinion.
Maybe I was over-reacting, although the fact I haven't yet forgotten about it, means the word had an impact.

It reminded me of a sweet old lady from east London I used to know who regularly called me "Ducky" or "My Ducks"which always made me want to quack back at her, but in her case I didn't react because I knew it was just a habitual figure of speech and maybe that's the matter here.

I don't know how Katy felt on reading your reply, it may not be an issue for her, but but I felt I wanted to air this point and hopefully it will prompt you to examine the reason you use the term.

One point to consider: if Katy had been a Kevin, presumably you would not have used the word "sweetheart", so which word would you have used instead?!

Hi Mammal, sorry I can't reply to you personally but you don't seem to have the courage to use your real name. I don't mind being called "sweetheart" quite endearing really :0 :0

I know there is no legislation for anyone to keep their property in good repair and am glad to say there is not. There is too much red tape in this country already. My comments are really about respect. Respect for your fellow citizens, businesses and community. Unfortunately too many people seem to have a couldn't care less, not my problem attitude these days. I feel sorry for the two business either side of this eyesore (Hiscocks and Limelight) who try to keep their premises looking good only to be let down by this boarded up wreck.

As for "get over it", what a silly comment to make. It means nothing and contributes nothing to the debate.

In the words of Lauren "Am I Bovvered?"

I don't think so!

If you know the owner please ask him to improve the appearance of his premises out of respect for his neighbours and community. Not a lot to ask of a businessman me thinks. I am sure if he worked next door to such a site he too would like to see it improved.

Are YOU the Vet in question? You do seem to be fighting his corner rather hard!!. And you are not afraid to use this site to air your views either!!.

I am sure that I saw on the news once a group of 'rogue' residents who in the dead of night planted out whole roundabouts and generally made their town a prettier place to live - Liphook needs a 'rougue repair-man' for all the little jobs that need doing around here that no one else is willing to do. Of course this person needs to have a large disposable income and plenty of spare night time on his hands. After all - who would undo such work, even if it was illegal!

Oh, Is that why the square is to be shut for a few nights!!

I agree a complete eyesore. If he has planning permission to convert into flats why doesn't he do it, why's he been waiting 5 odd years to do it?

Mammal you seem to 'know' this vet personally , any ideas?

Perhaps Mr Mammal should have said "that's right, you tell him mate".That could equally apply to a bird or a geezer then ! TTFN

I have been called many a name in my time, but never 'mate'. I dont think it can apply to male & female!.

OK point taken, I can get a little self righteous, but please some of these points are just going to foment trouble, it's a gripe, a grumble is it really appropriate on a public forum, come on. Leave the man alone. I am sure in due course it will be sorted and Liphook will be restored to complete perfection. Let's focus on the people that really deserve a snipe, Lord Sainsburies or someone.

No I am not the `vet' in question but he does treat mammals and I respect him for that.

Whilst we are all sniping at each other the big boys are laughing and getting away with all kinds of skulduggery. So lets all lick our wounds, bruised egos and move on.

One more thing the `Liphook in Bloom' people are excellent, hard working they have my undying praise.
Magnificent. The flowers are beautiful.

Mammal,

I could be totally wrong here, but somehow i feel that Katy, could be someone connected with the very people that you are praising?? Interesting?.

Re: Eyesore on Midhurst Road

I am aware of that candy floss.

You know what, I am going to stick my neck out here just to test the water, forgive me if I seem to be overly philosophical here, most of the people on this site seem to be articulate and clever enough, but strangely shallow.

It amazes me how people are so distracted by aesthetics that they are completely blind to ethics, one bloke has a shabby shop and a few people are up in arms, yet Sainsbury's Ltd build an architectural artifice to Capitalist greed and no one bats an eyelid.

You know if Sainsbury's weren't trying to corner every market there is, by hook or by crook then maybe the shop that is boarded up wouldn't by boarded up.

What does the name 'mammal' conjure up? A dinosaur is a reptile...

No I do not think you are sticking your neck out. (you are definately not a tortoise either). I think you have said exactly what I have been trying to say about premisses in station road, but only crisper and more direct. Good on you!! If you have a business that has been affected by the big S, pop into our shop early this week (Not Monday- CLOSED), and something may be of interest to you??.

Mammal

In due course it may be sorted............how long exactly would this be? It's been a mess for at least seven years. Not sure I will be around long enough to see it improved!

Thanks for your comments regarding the flowers for Liphook in Bloom. I am sure they would welcome you as a new member! Pop in to the Parish Office for details of who to contact.

regards

Katy

OK Katy

I will not agree with this issue with the shop, however I do hope you are around for as long as is possible. I think when people work hard in a voluntary capacity a lack of cooperation and appreciation can be extremely frustrating. But the generous spirit in which it is carried out is important. Believe me, people do appreciate what you and your friends do for the town.

Alas If I came and helped you, I may very well end up agreeing with you with the shop issue, we couldn't have that, now could we?
