Lidl coming to Liphook OSU SITE
- lisa (18th May 2007 - 21:39:15)
I have been reliably informed that Lidl are trying to acquire the OSU site. What great news for Liphook and at last some competition for Sainsburys and cheaper shopping for us. Lets welcome them into our village and encourage more local shopping....we don't have to go to Bordon anymore! This is bound to be good news for local traders as well with more people coming here to shop and NO MORE retirement developments.
Newly elected Councillors please note this support

The original hope for a multi-shop facility is still being nurtured in this small mind and the thought of another large single store does not instill great joy, even if it does give Sainsburys a run for their money.
The site is massive which means a large store which may mean more competition for existing traders as Lidl is not just food and not a great prospect if you live within or near the area. Sorry Lisa but a thumbs down from me.

Not many villages/small towns are lucky enough to have a big, empty space in their centres to create something imaginative that will provide jobs and still look attractive...but we do!!
To fill it up with another bl**dy great supermarket and associated traffic, would be the worst possible option IMO :(

Good point Chris But I have seen some smaller Lidl stores and as you point out it is a large area and maybe it is possible to have a multi shop facility here as well which should include smaller shops and a good mix of facilities. All this could mean that we can do all our shopping here in Liphook without having to go to Portsmouth or Guildford. This must surely make sense with all the parking problems and traffic congestion we seem to have these days which seems to be getting worse and worse.

Hi,
Does Lidl stand for "Liphook in decline limited"?

If lidl are looking to build here, why doesn't the council recommend the old Fairfields site in Station Road?. this would be a fantastic opportunity to re-generate this street, re-build an eyesore, and as it is already commercial ideal. Leave the OSU site for the community!! If its good enough for Countrywide - it must be good enough for Lidl and a good neighbour for them too!!. At least then local residents and businesses here could buy essentials.
Station Roads throughout the country are traditionally commercial, so lets keep it that way!!

What therapy you are!!. I was just beginning to book into some sort of 'help' as all that I was seeing was doom and gloom for Station Road.!!. This idea should satisfy most of Liphook surely. To put it on the OSU is totally the wrong place, as it would create a 3rd shopping area within liphook, and it really should be for the community OR an extension to the Beaver Industrial Estate. After all, we need manufacturers, producers, and professional people here, who offer better rates of pay than shop work. A community is a mixture of all types of Business, we do lack skilled workplaces.
It does surprise me at the number of postings that mention travelling to other areas to buy items, when choosing a house do people not look at the facilities here, and if your needs are for large shops, why pick one that hasn't any then moan about it, and comment that there isnt anything that inspires them to shop here!! Liphook after all isnt the cheapest place!!
It may make a few not travel to Bordon Lidl, but when they open a Wilkinson soon, I bet many will still go there (and perhaps buy in Bordon Lidl while there, as they are almost next door!!)

I would welcome Lidl. It is still somewhat unusual as a shop compared to the more traditional UK supermarket format but it offers cheap goods and food and being a younger person who struggles to keep up with the day to day costs of running a home it would be good. Sainsburys might spout propaganda on signs about how they have "lowered prices" bla bla but overall they are still too expensive.

Lidl is a different proposition to Sainsburys, ie much cheaper end of the market (it might even be the cheapest chain??), so anyone that has been hoping for a Waitrose or a Marks & Spenser food shop will be disappointed! It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the Council/planning proecess and the press.
In terms of location I would have thought regenerating Station Road makes much more sense than opeing a forth retail cente in town; but this is always going to be a difficult on - on the one hand Liphook needs to do something with the OSU (preferably not another retirement village), but on the other hand attracting office/light business use has proved to be very difficult...

Why don't we just build a nice new enclosed ground for Liphook FC on that site or a sports complex or both.

Good grief lets hope we don't get a Lidl. (Although this rumour sounds like a wind up). My ongoing gripe against Sainsbury's is nothing to do with the particular brand its just that Liphook can't cope with the extra traffic. In addition Sainsbury's has had a dire effect on local shops and reduced our choice. Can't blame them, its their job to win market share - they don't care one jot about the local community. Putting a huge supermarket in the middle of the village was simply a crazy idea but its done now and we have to live with it. Putting a second large supermarket in the village would be bonkers. I remember when Sainsbury's was first discussed some thought that the extra traffic generated would be good for local businessses and we've all found out how good a forecast that was.

The remaining piece of OSU land should be used for entertainment ot leisure facilities. Some of could be used as a car park during the week and for a market on a Saturday. Unfortunately as the land isn't owed by the community it will probably used for something that makes the owner a lot of money.

Every owner wants the most for their land. Sainbury's built their store for nothing after purchasing the OSU Site and selling the rest for development.
This site should be used for what it was intended and earmarked from the very beginning. ie Industrial extension of the Beaver. Failing that which I don't think will ever happen, it should be social housing. Come to think of it that will never happen either. I place the blame entirely at the door of all councils, local and district for not having the backbone to make a stand and demand these intentions are carried out. Then again that means someone making a decision. Not a chance.

Good idea Grahame if Lidl occupied a small part of the site surely the Parish Council could do a compulsory purchase of the remainder and use it for facilities for the village or perhaps Lidl could be required to build these facilities..... a permanent place for the scouts and brownies perhaps. Does anyone have any ideas of what we should do with this land?

Liz
Have you forgotten that we have just LOST a supermarket!!. Lidl are not your traditional kinda supermarket, and having seen how the tills have been removed from the one in Bordon - not as popular as you may emagine. They started with about 8 tills - now there is only 3 and usually only one open at a time.!! They will offer a CHOICE for people - something the other one cant.
Sue
[editor - LIDL don't need so many tills as their checkout staff work at least 3 times faster than those at the big S. Their pay is performance related and their products have much larger barcodes which scan first time every time. The big S should note these points]

Steve, I have just read your message and I wonder whether industrial would really work here with the noise hazard and large lorries, but I agree it is a very difficult choice and ideally it should be just landscaped as a green space for public use. Would'nt that be nice!

You can forget any idea of the Parish Council purchasing this land. Their entire annual budget would probably not cover the legal fees and their surplus at the end of the year is roughly equivalent to what they can screw out of the Scouts and Guides.

Does a sports complex not make money then?

Assuming the rumour is true I don't see Lidl's opening a corner shop - so they would almost certainly generate more traffic. They're not much competition for Sainsbury's either, unfortunately, because although cheap, most of their products are cr*p.
