Hindhead - avoidance during disruption
- gen (6th May 2007 - 10:17:36)

Took 50 mins from Liphook entry to A3 to get to Hindhead on Thursday morning at 9.50. No accident apparently, so can't imagine why it took so long. Arrived at my meeting on the High Street at 11.15 a.m. when it was nearly over
As I'm new to Liphook, can I have some suggestion (serious ones!) for alternative routes - if there are any others apart from Haslemere/Milford?

High Street, Hmm... any particular one?

Try Haslemere, Grayswood to Godalming. Then A3 to Guildford.

I always swear by the following route...go to Passfield and do a right then follow lanes through to Arford, Churt, straight across at Churt crossroads and onto Thursley village. You come out on the A3 beyond Hindhead and the road works. Never any traffic, may add a few minutes to your journey time but well worth it! Oh and it's very pretty!

Thanks for the feedback - shall try each in turn (if I can find them) and decide what's best for us - it looks as if the disruption is going to be with us for a while. Of course, it may get easier as people try the other routes.

Somebody I was talking to said it was quite a good idea to go to Haslemere and then turn left at the pond and approach the Hindhead crossroads from the Haslemere direction. Anyone any thoughts on that?

Hi,

I live in Haslemere and can only advise that to be a very very bad idea! The traffic is also really bad from this direction and only getting worse!

Have you thought about getting a train if you can? It could be easier than driving into Guildford - its what i do everyday and my total journey time is 15 minutes!

Gen, You would have to be pretty early to get through Haslemere 'unscathed'. Anything much after 7.00 am and you risk getting stuck at junctions/traffic lights, and then driving north in convoy - and there is always someone who wants to drive 20 mph slower than everyone else...

Gen

I do not advise the route via arford - Churt-and Thursley. This should only be used in dia emergencies. Having lived in that area for many years - long before the traffic is a busy as today, it was far more dangerous then than passfield is today, for those living in that area. Rat running along these country roads is dangerous, and many can only handle one car at a time - its like load of people rat running through Bramshott, out to Headly and through Churt, or via Grayshott. Non are suitable if in a hurry. The best tip is go by train!!. After all you must live near to the Station, as you can monitor the Carpark so well.
'let the train take the strain'. Then you can post your bad experiences about that!!

I did think about the train, but it only goes once an hour, and now they've taken off the cheap rates in the morning, it works out at quite a lot of money if there are two or more of you.
However, I really do appreciate the help with routes, I have not tried any of the ones suggested, so thank you all for being so kind and taking the trouble to reply.
