Station Road shops
- Sue W (3rd May 2007 - 09:32:59)
to you all...
Just had an Idea. Lets use the 'open Forum' to find out what the shoppers in Liphook require in the way of shops along Station Road.
So go on.... get it off your chest and perhaps some may be viable. Please don't say a BUTCHERS - one has tried here for months!!. Gave up the will to fight anymore.
Actually, Nat. is there any chance of a change of heart, now I see that the ceiling and light fittings have been done?
Did you know that we had an Art Exhibition in one of the empty shops, - that Up market enough for you. It may even become permanent!!

LOL that was the main idea for my shop as I trained to make chocolate and truffles even music bands have eaten our tasty chocs Before I changed my mind LOL ( But we do stock a small range of those handmade truffles)
I think A news agents would really work in station would love to do it but better stick to what I know I guess.
Any other ideas ?

Butchers (possibly with a deli?) - Please don't give up.
Greengrocers (a brilliant one in Bordon, no reason we couldn't have the same in Liphook)
Newspaper/convenience store

Whats the piont , sainsburys seem to sell everything now . They have closed all the other shops in liphook . I remember when there was 3 butchers, 3 green grocers and at least 3 paper shops . maybe we need a fewmore estate agents ,that is untill sainsburys start selling houses. How about a national health dentist.

There is already a shop in Liphook that sells hand made chocks. Once you have made your selection, they are presented in a very nice box. Peep in Side down.... Station Road!!

Eneida - where is the choc shop?
I wish we had a niche special food shop, one that sells necessities as well, butter, milk etc.
And a newsagent that sells stamps and things would be lovely.
What about a book shop?
Or a fresh fish shop? Greengrocers, too

Liz,
That is such a great Idea and wish the best of luck for the deli side of things.
A friend of mine had a deli in southampton it did Ok but because stock is fresh it can also can go off very quickly which is where she found her loss but I think if you mix it all into one you could have one cracking business as I said in an posting I would LOVE to do it but it all comes down to timing.
Just hope some one has the same ideas and really goes for it

I have read the postings regarding the shops in Station Road and did wonder whether any of the local people could form a consortium and open up some of the shops between them. The empty carpet shop could perhaps be the butchers, deli and greengrocers, the accommodation upstairs could become the Internet Cafe. This way several people could be sharing the cost of the leases and rent etc. I understand from a previous posting that the Co-op still have the lease on the remains of Balfours has anyone approached the Co-op to see if they would be prepared to move back and open as a Newsagents, sweets and some convenience foods they could even get supplies from the Co-op in Headley Road if there was a need for certain items this is just a thought especially if they still have the lease.

Anne,
At last someone posting with solutions, the shared ownership works very well. Trevor and another shop owner looked into running a Newsagent, but with the pressures on our business - was totally out of the question. If anyone has the the capial, we know of someone willing to run it!!
As a matter of point - I have phoned Co-Op HQ, as soon as I heard Somerfields were closing, and the Butchers pulled out of leasing the shop. Perhaps it would not be a bad thing if other people did the same - or spoke to the Manager in the headley road one - perhaps a petition?. We know how busy Balfours was - and since its closure there has been a lack of trade for us - especially Sundays!!.

Well there we go again.....if Peep Inside sell delicious chocolates why haven't they added their shop to the New Local Shops section here and tell us what they sell???
How are people in Liphook, who don't live near Station Road, supposed to know what the shops there sell??
I sold my car when I moved here because I saw I could walk to every where I needed to.....but it's quite a trek to Station Road from my bit of the Headley Road....so if I wake up one morning and think "Oh I could do with some new sheets or really nice chocolates" I'm not going to also think " I'll walk all the way to Station Road on the off chance that someone there might be selling them" am I???
Come on Shop Keepers ADVERTISE!!!!

Eneida,
We both are at a risk of repeating ourselves over this issue. (advertising) So not to bore others I will refrain.
It is not for me to comment on why Peep Inside have not taken up the free ad on this site (I gave them details personally). Perhaps I could make a suggestion To everyone - how about picking a suitable time, go into every shop in the square - even those that you THINK you know what they stock - and have a good look, then on another occasion do the same in Station Road. I am sure you will find many products that are not itemized on any advertisement. Take our Housewares and Hardware - we stock over 20,000 different products - the advert would read like the telephone directory!!.
I dont mean it in a nasty way - but these shops are there for your benifit, some responsibility must be taken by individuals to know what is available in their own village.

What about a Pizza place or a resturant, a bookshop, or something to help get the kids of the streets, internet cafe, butchers ( yea there is talk of one ) or something that eldery can use as well as the younger generations, garden shop selling seeds bulbs etc small plants etc. farm shop with local produce, drapery shop, we need something

Sue,
Yes, local shops are there for our benefit....but surely they're also there to provide the owners with an income!!!
So if they want our custom they could, at least, give us a clue when they sell something that isn't obvious from the name of the shop and advertise.
I'm not talking about every little 'nut and bolt'.....but DELICIOUS CHOCOLATES are a very important part of some people's lives............

I think a book shop would be excellent, mobile phone shop with accessories, knicker shop etc, fresh veg, convenience food store (with lottery), toy shop, and a decent PLUMBERS - who stock the basic essentials!!! (unlike the new PLUMBASE)

eneida,
The best advertisement is word of mouth - and some have enjoyed the chocolates for a while. You have missed out there - but do go along and buy some. If like in my case the adverts seem to have landed on the mats of the blind and the tv ad in the Co-Op played to the deaf and blind!!.

We are already blessed with restaurants and take-away food - the chinese, Top Chef is the best chinese takeaway I have found for ages - try their Singapore noodles, hot shredded beef and various chicken delights.
I haven't tried the new Indian takeaway near the hardware, but I'm told it's good. The Nepalese is a super restaurant, recently taken over by an ex-Ghurka major. It was good before, I need to try it again before reporting. Shankleys is great home cooking - have a full brunch at the weekend - wonderful spread for less than a fiver.
The library gives free internet access, excellent, but not open enough days, sadly.
There just has to be someone who can see the possiblities of a small shop selling food, milk, papers - perhaps we could persuade that excellent little shop from Rogate to come here, or perhaps the guy has a family member who'd consider having a try.
I'm too old to take on anything like that, but I am certain they would have a ready market. I do not want to go all the way to Sainsbury's, and they never seem to have anything I want. I asked my husband to pop out yesterday - had to take the car because we had guests arriving - Saturday morning at around 11 am. They had no French Brie read-to-eat, only stuff in the chiller, no French sticks, and no French butter. He heard several people complaining that they couldn't get things. If they have shortages on a Saturday, God help us!
OF COURSE I would not expect to find all these things in a small convenience store. But there are loads of things I would buy on a regular basis. Someone opening a business like that would presumably find out what sorts of goods people are looking for, and stock accordingly.

Convenience store:
I am sure that a number of poeple can see the logic in opening such a store - afterall, many have posted here saying the same. But it would seem to me the nitty gritty is someone with the resources to do so. Why are so many people willing to suggest what 'someone else' should do. Is it short arms, long pockets, or just the fact that to operate a business in very costly. It may be fun to suggest what you like - but someone put the money where their mouth is!!.
Station Road
having taken a good look at Station Road today, the shops and general state of building is more than adequate. There does seem to be a 'problem' with the backs of one block - but it is the back - not the front, and no matter what, it will not change in the near future. Is it not what is SOLD in these shops the important fact, not what their roof looks like!. I for one think that all the traders do a splended job, and people should really start looking beyond the outside!!
