Digital TV Reception
- Eneida (30th Apr 2007 - 22:09:43)

We've got 2 TVs one with a Freeview box and the other with Freeview built into the VCR.

For the past 5 days or so, both have been madly pixelating, although the built in one is far worse. The analogue channels are fine.

Is anybody else having this problem with digital reception??

Eneida

[editor - I had Ofcom out a few weeks ago to try and track down the source of the interference that we suffer from, but although they saw it, it was not on for long enough for them to pin point - they will come back twice more - so I'm making a diary of times. Strangely it is often around 20 and 40 minutes past the hour. Any other information would greatly assist them to locate the source and get it stopped. My aerial is pointed to Hannington (due West) because the signal is stronger then that from Midhurst.]

I’d suffered with the problem ever since I changed to a digital TV which was about 6 months ago. I’d always put it down to atmospherics but this explanation is a whole lot more plausible. I’ll keep a diary too so hopefully we can track this down.

[editor - please let me know your postcode on any other posts, they will not be displayed, and I'll compile a map for Ofcom, also which way your aerial points, East for Midhurst, West for Hannington (Basingstoke) - might help locate the source.]

Hi Ed,

Our aerial is also pointed at Hannington and our postcode is GU30 ***.

We've also had moments of interference since we got Freeview (although I haven't timed them) and I guess that's what you're talking about. But, as I said in my post, for the past 5/6 days the pixelating is almost constant, making watching Digital virtually impossible.

We don't really know what's causing this, since analogue channels are fine, so presumably it's not the aerial? Do you have any ideas??

Eneida

[editor - I have a spare setup box already tuned to Hannington, which you might want to try, just in case it is your freeview box that has gone wrong.]

Hi Ed,

That's very kind of you!!! If we can try plugging in your box then we'll know if we need to buy a new one or if it's something more fundamental.....

I have been having the same. It is down to the High Pressure system over us which is bringing the lovely weather, but with it poor TV reception. An anologue ("normal") TV will just have a slightly 'fizzy' picture where the digital picture pixels break up as mentioned above.

I brought a TV booster pack for mine and it made a big difference. It seems that for whatever reason we dont get great TV reception in Liphook anyway.

We have 2 digital TV's that work fine.
We have a Hi-gain aerial pointing to Midhurst, with a booster, and our signal strength is 8-10 on the TV's tuner. We're also in a Bungalow so our aerial isn't that high. We live on the Headley Road side of the village.
Seems the problem might be due to the Basingstoke transmitter?
