The Best Burger?
- Helen (20th Apr 2007 - 19:18:01)

Before you read this understand that I am in no way affiliated with the pub in question and have not been paid to write this!...

...but I just HAVE to recommend the homemade beefburger from the lunch/evening menu at the Rising Sun in Milland. Amazing quality homemade burger served in ciabatta bread and worth every penny parted with.

If you fancy something a bit different then venture down there for a truly tasty treat.

(not to offend any vegetarians out there - their vege menu looked just as tasty!)

Let me know what you think then - it sounds like you are a true burger connoisseur!...

I think they've only just started doing food again at the Rising Sun (they weren't the last time I went in Feb)

I had the Ploughman's today and it was awesome - lovely crusty bread, rare roast beef, brie, cheddar and a game terrine with salad. Must have been a posh ploughman, absolutely delicious.

Nice outside seating area and a nice alternative to the Links and Black Fox as a posh pub!

I too have heard some really good things about the rising sun at milland and that its the new place to be. although it always used to be when i was younger they used to keep rabbits in the garden if i remember correctly mind you that was more than 10 years ago years ago i guess. good to hear something poitive about a local pub though.

Would have a burger at the links hotel any day, Westy the chef makes the best burger ever, its home made with lots of chips & melted cheese its the best cure for any hang over.

Sounds mouthwatering - haven't eaten much today!
Had nice fish and chips at the Rising Sun yesterday - horrible swing door kept banging for a couple of minutes every time they went through it, but if they cure that, it would be truly delightful. The people serving are really trying to please, a very good experience.

Re: The Best Burger?
- gen (4th May 2007 - 00:12:39)

I thought Old Thorns was upmarket chinese? Am I losing my mind?

Re: The Best Burger?
- Candyfloss (4th May 2007 - 08:53:34)

Gen

I too would not have dreamt that the Old Thorns would sell burgers!! - Perhaps it a 'spoof' advertising point LOL

Candyfloss

[editor - I had a meeting at Old Thorns last night, a couple nearby where enjoying what looked like a half decent burger, with 'fries' and a side salad]

Old Thorns was never Chinese, and the Japanese Company that owned it has just sold it.

SH

Not too wrong with the advertising point!!. By the way how many changes of hands has old thorns seen in the past 5 years, and when did the new'people' take over.?

The Kosaido Company had owned Old Thorns for 17 years, this is the first change of "ownership". There have however been several management changes over the years.
If you want to try it out, the restaurant, bar and Leisure Club are all open to non members

- Henry G (10th May 2007 - 23:58:36)

Well....

I have to say.
In liphook There are quite a few places to find a good burger.
I am currently a chef at the links. And a former chef of Old Thorns Hotel.
And also worked at the Fish and Chip shop on Station road whilst at college.
But if i honestly have to say where to get a burger from, it defenantly is the links, where they are homemade with fresh local ingredients. And they are quite the beasty burger.
Old thorns burgers..... Well, I have to say, they are very good, but not homemade, but bought in. Same going with the fish and chip shop.
I have found that the anchor (Hungry Horse) have always over cooked my burgers, same as with Headley road Fish and chip shop.
But that is just my opinion.

Anyways.... hope thats some useful information for all the burger lovers out there!

Have to agree with Henry, The Links is a great burger and the best you can find in Liphook. But sadly it is also the most exspensive. Credit to Henry and Westy on the cooking !
The waiting staff are also great . Not so sure about the new Managers . Come back Debbie !!!!

Re: The Best Burger?
- gen (11th May 2007 - 17:47:08)

Sounds as if the Links is the place to try out my first burger since I was put off by MacDonalds. I expect that it has to be quite expensive if it's decent beef as opposed to minced up gristle - a steak costs an arm and a leg these days.
Wonder which day and time is the best to ensure freshly made and cooked a bit rare? When they aren't too busy?

Re: The Best Burger?
- candyfloss (11th May 2007 - 21:45:45)

Gen,

I hope you don't get a reply when they are quiet. It won't be for long, as we will all try together!!

Re: The Best Burger?
- gen (11th May 2007 - 22:38:04)

Be funny if we all went at the same time, wouldn't it! The thing I don't like about burgers is the bun. But I suppose you could have them eggs and things? Or would that be rather odd?

Re: The Best Burger?
- Mike Grimes (11th May 2007 - 23:38:02)

Question: If the best burgers are homemade, why do you all go out for them?

Re: The Best Burger?
- Helen (12th May 2007 - 11:41:27)

Ah - you see having the Rising Sun burger prompted me to drive to the brilliant butcher in Empshott for some real mince then I stopped off at Sainsburys (my local fabulous supermarket) for all the other ingredients, and by looking at the Rising Sun burger I judged these to be - fresh 'erbs, chilli pepper, onions etc... and of course the ciabatta bread to replace the hideous invention of the sesame seeded buger bun. Really you must try!...

Re: The Best Burger?
- oscar (12th May 2007 - 12:26:42)

Gen, The Links seem to be fairly quiet most of the time nowadays. Gone are the days when it took 10 mins to get to the bar. The food is still great, the waiting staff are as good as ever (although they dont look as happy ) . There is only one thing that has changed. COME BECK DEBBIE!!!

Let me know when you are going , love to join you .

- Sooze (14th May 2007 - 15:28:50)

We went to eat at The Rising Sun in Milland yesterday and thought the food was excellent. Ben (the guy in charge) was so very helpful as on a Sunday they only have two choices of roast lunches at the moment and I do not eat red meat! Ben very kindly said that he would cook some chicken for me and this was delicious. He was so very helpful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble...such a welcome change these days.

We would heartily recommend the food there and they have made an effort to make the pub more atmospheric. A very good alternative to The Links and the The Sun at Rake. We will certainly be returning to The Rising Sun.

- LippyChick (14th May 2007 - 19:22:43)

I have to agree with Helen and Sooze.

We went to eat at the Rising Sun last week, and I had to try one of the fabled burgers. It was delicious, and the best bit of all? The chips with it. They were very possibly the best chips I've ever eaten!!

The atmosphere is warm, friendly and welcoming, and the service fantastic. I am most certainly looking forward to my next visit.

Thanks to all at The Rising Sun :)
