Sainsbury's (yawn ...)
- Doreen Lawrence (29th Mar 2007 - 12:11:04)
Ok, ok I’ve got the message. Sainsbury’s has opened a new superstore in Liphook Yes, really! Please print this letter just in case anyone’s been living in a hole in the ground for the last two months and missed it.
Their marketing people should surely either be promoted or sacked for the level of advertising overkill they have subjected us to.
Now they’re open and still it goes on. This week I counted :
• 6 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lamposts in the village square. (Any old Liphookians remember the village square improvement scheme a few years ago? Those lovely old-fashioned lamposts, with tasteful flower baskets attached to blend in with the environment. Don’t the bright yellow Superstore signs just complement them beautifully?
• 2 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lampposts in London Road.
• 4 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lampposts in Midhurst Road.
• 2 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lampposts in Headley Road.
• 1 bright yellow Superstore notice attached to a lamppost in Longmoor Road.
• 2 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lampposts in Portsmouth Road.
• 2 bright yellow Superstore notices attached to lampposts in Haslemere Road.
• 1 blue (oops!) Food store notice pointing to Sainsburys and placed directly outside Somerfields in Station Road (nice competitive touch there). Actually I noticed some bright spark has turned it around and it’s actually pointing to the charity shop at the moment. Give that person a crusty loaf – preferably from the local bakery…
• A hulking great orange hoarding directly outside Sainsbury’s itself – just in case we hadn’t noticed the shop perhaps?
• 4 half-page and 1 full-page orange advert in The Messenger.
• A half-page orange advert in The Herald.
• Even the bus-stops outside the Big S are in corporate colours, and they have a dedicated roundabout road-sign just in case anyone dares drives past.
I have a suggestion.
Why don’t they just erect a new village sign on the A3 saying WELCOME TO SAINSBURYVILLE.
I’m off to Asda.

"Yawn" just about sums it up Doreen.....you obviously haven't much else going on in your life to have time to do so much sign spotting ;)
Whatever turns you on, I suppose.....

Doreen, with all due respect I think you should get out more.

With HSBC going part time leaving only LloydsTSB as the only village bank, perhaps Sainsburys could open a bank in their store.

Doreen - Could be you're observant and care what the village looks like. Fortunately you are not alone or we wouldn't have the excellent Liphook In Bloom team.

Steve
It would seem to me that Doreen does get out enough!!
Doreen,
You forgot to mention multi-plays on Delta Radio and a rather large van with an 'A' advertising board, which is driving around ALL areas, and parked in some very odd spots. Saw it in Tesco Bordon - not for too long i should think!!.

Do you remember when, after the nuclear reactor pile caught fire, they renamed Windscale so people wouldn't be put off going there. For a long time it was known by everyone as Sellafield-formerly-known-as-Windscale.
We could be Sainsburys-formerly-known-as-Liphook.

Guess that would bring out the other sign and hoarding specialist.

Why are the yellow signs along the old A3 directing traffic towards the CENTRE of Liphook, if its not busy enough!!. Why are they not sending those comming from Rake direction down Station Road. This would save them much time and keep conjestion away from the square - or perhaps they don't want to make people aware of the shops there??

hi Doreen
Agree about the saturation coverage of Sainsbury's opening - at the expense of half a (sustainable) forest, it seems. Can't help but notice we have a Sainsbury's in store. It's certainly brighter and bigger but better...?
I wish they would put a dustbin or better still, a plastic bag recycling bin by the bottle banks - it would make the place clearer. Regular sweeps by a member of staff would also help make the area safer too, the amount of broken glass on the floor is shocking.
Sumi
PS - must send you the paperwork!

clearing up the recycling area is down to your fantastic local council. sainsbury's are not responsible for all the problems in liphook.

Sorry did you expect them not advertise or something? "Ah yes we're going to spend millions on re-designing and expanding our shop but just to be totally original we're not going to tell anyone about it!"
I don't like Sainsbury's and so I don't shop there.
It seems alot of people are unhapy with Sainsbury's in Liphook... why don't they vote with their purses then and not go?
Get your noses out of the Daily Mail and stop complaining.

Apparently Sainsbury's has attracted a lot of customers from nearby towns/villages like Haslemere because Tesco doesn't do clothes (yet!)

We'll soon see if that is true because they'll all be wearing the same shirt.

Mike
I'm glad that you mentioned people wearing the same clothes - it had brought a smile when i realised come the summer - everyone would look like China a few year back - wearing the same clothes - the staff in theirs and customers all matching too!!. I know that many chain stores stock the same clothes - but the chances of meeting more than one wearing the same as you at the same time in the same place is very rare - but with so many 'flocking' to buy cheap supermarket clothes in such a small area is very amusing!!. It will be easy to 'spot' the Sainsburys addict!!
The sad thing about this new store is yes it is bringing in people from out of the area - but are they spending anywhere else in the village? - i doubt it - Can anyone honestly say their shop, pub, or commercial outlet has gained business because of sainsburys (answers on a postage stamp would do!!)
