The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Paul Robinson (6th Mar 2007 - 20:31:20)

For some time now I have frequented the Links and enjoyed a glass or two of the house Merlot. My pleasure on these occasions has been tempered by the hefty £4.00 charged for a large glass.

Imagine my shock therefore to discover this week that the price of the same glass of Merlot has been hiked up by 15% to an incredible £4.60 per glass!

Purely in the interest of research I can report that the same drink can be had in the Deer's Hut for £3.60 and at the Green Dragon a glass of Merlot or, in my opinion, a vastly superior Rioja can both be had for just £3.50.

I therefore propose to forego the company of the Pringle sweater brigade and take my pleasure in a more affordable establishment.

I agree with you. I understand the place has a new owner. They are not doing themselves any favours with these ridiculous price hikes, tis pure greed. Perhaps we can all sign a petition or something, explaining that the 'local' will not be frequented by 'locals' again as we cant afford it!....its not as though they have reduced the price of the meals to counteract it.

Any news on the new wine bar talked about here, last year?

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Les (7th Mar 2007 - 00:17:49)

The price hike is probably to keep out the non-pringle wearing rabble out (no offence intended). Always thought the Dragon was a good pub anyway, looking forward to my first pint of Fosters in 5 months!.
Incidentally, in my local you can buy a whole bottle of good wine for $9.60, a beer will cost you $4.80 a pint!.

I'm only coming home to sober-up, but dont tell her-in- doors that!!!!

Sainsburys does 2 litres of Woodpecker for only £2.50. And I can guarantee that none of us in the bus shelter wear pringle.

- Mike Grimes (7th Mar 2007 - 14:49:07)

I always thought that people who choose their place of relaxation based on the price of a drink ended up at places like Wetherspoons. Cheaper still, get a case of Merlot from Majestic and drink it at home.
I tend to go to these places to convive, not talk about the price of beer.
I suspect that the prices are not the only thing wrong at The Links.

Well said, Mike.

Paul, wander into General Wine in Station Road and find yourself some real bargains. Then invite a few friends round. Much better than going t'pub.

cheers!

Freddie

Mike and Freddie:

Very droll, but you're missing Paul's point. Paul is correctly pointing out that the price hike for the wine they serve in The Links cannot be justfied. Judging by his previous posts on this site, Paul seems a man of taste so doubt very much if he would patronise the likes of Wetherspoons.

- Finchie (7th Mar 2007 - 23:20:28)

Not gone back to the Links since they "banned" kids a few years ago. Not missed it either. Kids absolutely love the refurbed Robin Hood at Passfield.

Recommend the Rioja in the Green Dragon. Seems a VERY large glass they use and don't match your mates pint for pint with it ! Great value. Good Company.

Wish the Black Fox was closer (walking distance). So a challenge to the Black Fox & Deers Hut & Prince of Wales...

Many years ago I went to a cracking pub on the Isle of White - The White Mouse Inn. Did 365 varieties of whiskey. They had a stunning way of looking after customers - they had a White Van - "The Mousemobile" that picked up & dropped off customers in a certain radius for a fixed fee (something like £2 each way). Aim wasn't to make money on the transport, but to fill the pub.
Footnote: Fond memories as I got engaged at the White Mouse Inn. Strangely I hadn't even got into February on the Whiskey !

Look forward to your innovative ways to compete for our custom !

Cheers, Finchie
PS Quick Clue - Exhorbitant Price hikes might not work...

John -

I stopped going to The Links a long time ago. So am out of touch with what's happening there.

It's a shame that every time one of the local pubs (with one or two exceptions) seems to be succeeding, the manager changes or the ownership changes.

When Andy Ellis was running the Green Dragon, I enjoyed going in there for the odd pint or just a coffee. What's it like these days?

And what did happen to the wine bar idea? I think the conversations here made it clear a lot of us would support it.

cheers

Freddie

Hi,
If the price of their wine is considered to much by some,
why not buy a different more affordable drink, there's plenty of choice.
As for the current price, other pubs outside of Liphook, but in the surrounding area, charge the same or more for a glass of wine when touring around.

As for Pringle sweaters, I think there very good quality.

Good luck.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (8th Mar 2007 - 13:57:50)

A 15% price increase in one hit is totally unacceptable/ unjustified and greedy however boring your sweaters are. The Links is not a 'destination pub' like the Sun at Rake - but if that's what it is aiming for it has a long way to go. Latest on the menu Moules Mariniere ... and Chips!! YUK. Nothing wrong with mussels or chips, but not together surely?

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- rob (8th Mar 2007 - 18:17:06)

Liz

Mussels and chips are de rigeur in parts of the Continent (France, Belgium). In Belgium, they eat the chips with mayonnaise. You should try it! Delicious.

rob.

Yes Liz

Ditto in Spain....delicious!

- Steve Read (8th Mar 2007 - 22:09:06)

Strikes me wearing a pringle sweater is the least of your worries compared to going to a pub and drinking wine.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (9th Mar 2007 - 08:42:00)

Mussels and chips, OK perhaps. Chips with mayonnaise, delicious. But moule mariniere and chips? As I said, YUK! Well I suppose you could dip your chips in the wine sauce. Appeals to some obviously or it wouldn't be on the menu.

Steve, you must be good mates with the new landlord at the Links. He doesn't seem to think drinking wine in a pub is a good idea either.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- z (9th Mar 2007 - 18:33:49)

Ra Ra Ra if is not something with you lot its the other!

I happen to think the Links is a very nice place to drink wine and or eat and if the prices are that bit higher than elsewhere so what. We all know the Links has always been that bit more expensive and if you don't like it that much go and sit in the Anchor with the burbury baseball cap wearing 15 year olds.

Thought you'd all have more to moan about with Sainsburys re-opening and the parish muppet going on about the scouts and guide hall on the front page of the paper yet again.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Steve Read (9th Mar 2007 - 22:08:17)

Its 9.30pm on a Friday evening just been to pick my son up at Liss. Did a bit of market research on the way there and back. Black Fox 4 cars out front 2 in the car park at rear, Sun at Rake 4 cars in the car park, Deers Hut 4 cars out front, The Links car park PACKED.
Enough said!
In reply to the usual bleating, no I don't know the landlord, do not use the place and really don't give a fig!
I expect Sainsbury's are chuffed with the Links taking some of the flak away from them. By the way what a lovely store they have got now.
If one was inclined to go for a drink at a local pub given the choice of paying more to find other punters with something resembling an atmosphere, now where would I go?
The Pringle is already being ironed.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Barry (10th Mar 2007 - 09:04:26)

Is the plan to turn the links into a hotel still going ahead, does anyone know?

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Eneida (10th Mar 2007 - 09:58:29)

Well I LIKE The Links!!!

I think it's a great pub with good food, good service and a lovely atmosphere....a grown up environment for adults in other words....so with apologies to all the parents out there....I like the fact that there aren't any screaming kids running around :)

And why are so many people here obsessed with Pringles?? I never touch potato crisps myself!!

Eneida

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (12th Mar 2007 - 08:25:24)

I like the Links too Eneida (and there never has been any probelm taking kids in there providing they behave themselves). I just still think a 15% increase for a glass of wine is taking the mickey.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Paul (12th Mar 2007 - 13:33:00)

Hi,
I understand their price of house wine by the glass has not increased for three years. Any business incurs annnual cost increases, therefore a 15% rise now after this long period is justified if needed.
Local wine merchants say wine has increased in price in the wholesale UK market this year already.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (12th Mar 2007 - 17:04:07)

Sorry Paul, not convinced. Think you'll find its Fullers policy to charge £4.60 for a large glass of plonk (reasonable plonk, it has to be said) whatever the previous pricing policy has been. Unfortunately.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Mike Grimes (13th Mar 2007 - 01:03:07)

We are 20 posts into this thread and someone (Liz) has mentioned Fullers for the very first time. Quite a significant change of ownership.

Nobody has mentioned the Licencee's name. I don't suppose many users of the Links know it.

Anyway, I thought it worth calling in to check on the moules mariniere situation. Everybody knows that "Moule Frites" is the only dish that Belgians eat but "quelle horreur" the Links are serving them with frozen fat fries - not the nice little dinky frites. In fact most things seem to be served with frozen fat fries - like any brewery owned pub with a landlord called landlord.

It's still the nicest pub in Liphook that I can walk to.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- z (13th Mar 2007 - 15:46:12)

I think you will find the chips along with most of the menu at the Links has not changed too much and if you are talking prices I've found some of the things on the menu have decreased slightly.

This is because even though the pub has been brought by fullers the chef and most the staff and therefore the high standards have stayed the same. Mary and Alec are doing a grand job in my opinion of running that place hats of to them i wouldnt take it on. with you lot bitching and moaning about the place godness knows why any of you bother going out 'cos if your not happy with the pub that is apprently the social g spot for the rich and famous/business big guns and most liphook what would you be happy with???

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (14th Mar 2007 - 15:45:52)

So the Links is the "Social g spot for the rich and famous/business big guns and most of Liphook." Wow. Over-egging the pudding just a tad? Or is this a different Links? Doesn't sound like the one I know!! Pleasant pub but that's about it.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- z (15th Mar 2007 - 08:33:35)

thats according to one of this months leading glossy mags.

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- liz (15th Mar 2007 - 16:14:25)

z

Which one?

Re: The Days of Wine and Poseurs
- Allan (15th Mar 2007 - 18:34:46)

Tatler, apparently, Liz. A reporter from BBC Radio South rang me last week to ask if I was aware that W. Sussex had been identified by an up market mag. as the "coolest" place in England to live, AND, Milland, in particular, as the "coolest" place in W. Sussex to be.

He asked if I could comment on why Tatler's contributer felt so enthusiastic, but, not having read the article, I resorted to a bit of a cop out and passed him onto the Parish Clerk. I understand she waxed lyrical for 20 or so minutes on the subject. And I'm sure whatever she said was absolutely right.

I have a sneaky feeling though, that the current incumbent at Great Trippets, Milland may have had an influence in the matter, having been a sometime contributer to Tatler himself.

He also happens to be The Queen's cousin. Nuff said.

Liphook is in Hampshire. Not that cool then!
