Iron Hill
- Jane G (29th Jan 2007 - 12:33:32)

Just wondered if someone with some local knowledge could tell me how long the Serpent Trail is at Iron Hill? I walked there yesterday with my children and we started following the signs for this trail but turned back as weren't sure how long it was! There are no signs anywhere in the car park to indicate a distance either. Anyone walked it?

I'm not sure how reliable this is but if it is 64 miles, you were probably wise to turn back.

"Britain’s newest long-distance footpath snakes for 64 miles (108km) from Petersfield through Midhurst to Petworth, round past Woolbeding Common across the Lynchmere Commons and the Ridge, to Black Down through to Haslemere.

The Serpent Trail has been set up by the Sussex Greensand Heaths Project. This is a five year project working to restore and recreate rare heathland across the Greensand area. The Serpent Trail was specifically designed to enable people to link together all these rare heathland areas on a long distance linear route. Heaths are the major habitat for Britain’s native rare reptiles, hence the name, The Serpent Trail.

There is a book in Liphook library called "Walks Around Liphook" which may give some idea.

More of a longer trail.

I've seen information boards at other locations. From memory, it wiggles about all the way from Petersfield to Midhurst through Haslemere.
