Sainsburys
- Rhys G (20th Jan 2007 - 17:44:50)
Has anyone noticed the application for an extended license to sell alcohol by Sainsbury's.
I noticed one sign and as I understand it they want to sell alcohol from 0600hrs to 2200hrs, meaning one or both of the premises (ie. main store / petrol station) is planned to be open form 0600hrs!

Personally speaking I would welcome the earlier opening hours at the petrol station as 08.00am is too late for me and I have to buy my petrol elsewhere.
As for the store there would seem to be little point as they seem unable to keep the shelves full during normal trading hours.
Better to use this time to re stock the store.

So what.
I think it is entirely reasonable for a business to want to sell it's entire range of merchandise for the hours that it is open.
Just because alcohol is available at 6:30 does not mean that it's going to be consumed at that time when, equally, alcohol bought at any another time could be.
Don't blame Sainsbury's for what isn't their fault

In 2001 Sainsburys were refused permisson to extend their opening hours beyond 8.00am until 10pm "to protect the amenities of neighbouring residential properties". I can't see a new application for extended hours on the EHDC website - yet.

I would certainly welcome opening the petrol station at 06:00am. It will be very useful for early starters.

Sainsbury's have been nothing but a pain in the backside since they started their extension work. I live very close to the store and the disruption has been beyond belief.
From working noisily through the night to parking in residents marked parking spaces, the issues are endless. I cannot believe that a national supermarket can handle this work as badly as they have.
In regards to an extension to opening hours, please have some consideration for people who live closely to the store. We don't want to be woken at 6am by the inevitable noise that this would cause. I look forward to objecting to their plans.

I don't think you have much longer left to raise objections, the notice I read this off is by the overflow Sainsbury’s car park, on their new advertising boards saying "there will soon be a better store blah blah blah."
Are they trying to minimise objections and complaints to this, as about a 1/4 of the sign is taken up by saying if you make a false claim you may be fined £5,000! Is this to deter people voicing concerns?

Noise from Sainsbury's construction work on the original building resulted in a noise abatement order being issued. This required any noisy external works to be completed by approx 7.00pm in the evening and lunchtime on Sundays. No idea how long these things last or whether it is still in existence, but if anyone is troubled by excessive noise from the site they should contact EHDC.

When the problems first came about with the Sainsbury's extension work, I did contact the council. They were really helpfull but unfortunately, if you submit an official complaint it goes against you if you want to sell your property in the future and this was not something I could afford to do.

Presumably it only 'goes against you' if it is something a prospective purchaser would be worried about and wasn't already aware of. I assume a buyer would not be concerned about past complaints about noise from construction work, once completed. If you plan to sell in the short term the potential for noise would be obvious to a buyer.

I wouldnt have an objection to the petrol station opening at 6am as like many others, i'm well on my way to work by 8am.
However, like Emma im getting just about fed up with the building work at Sainsburys, as my house is side on to the extension. Noise abatement order...what noise abatement order... Radios blaring at 7am on a Saturday morning and on Monday night of this week they were still there working under floodlights using plant at midnight.

As I said, I don't know if the noise abatement order is still in place. If the noise is bothering you then it might be worth finding out. If the order still exists then you may need to remind the contractors about it. If no one complains they will just carry on, and you can't really blame them.
