MASTS - AN UPDATE
- Mike Willetts (10th Nov 2003 - 19:45:04)

Firstly let me say how encouraged I and the rest of the Liphook Action group have been in terms of the general support we have received from neighbours and supporters alike.

We're amateurs when it comes to campaigning against the might of Big Business and the Government, but that doesn't mean to say that we're going to stop!!!

Many things are underway - joining forces with other communities facing similar concerns, media coverage, support of the new Shadow Trade Secretary and a considered approach to Hutchison designed to convince them that there are alternatives that they need to take seriously.

To post an update of all the progress made and future plans would test my typing skills to the limit, but I would like to say that we are planning a major public meeting with all the key players present. I think it's vital that we all hear the facts, allow all parties to have a say and resolve once and for all a way forward that makes commonsense for residents (the recipients of a service) and the providers of those services (in this case Hutchison). Without this "hearing" we are all in a state of stress, and I'd encourage as many people as possible to come to the hearing, which will be widely advertised, and is likely to take place on 29th November.

Together, we can create a community we all want to live in.

A well organised local Web site for Headly www.shaaft.com gives many useful links. It also points out there is a public meeting on TETRA on 5th December @ 7.30 pm in the Millennium Hall where the Rt Hon James Arbuthnot MP and other key speakers will be in attendance. All who are oposed to TETRA should attend.

We are the group who are organising the Public Meeting at the Millenium Hall on 5 December. We went to see our MP about 10 days ago, and he agreed to come and speak.

We are still in the process of organising so will post further details when they are available.

As before any queries to 723184.

Thanks to the actions of the various groups we are now all, I assume, rather anxious about TETRA and 3G.

It is not clear to me whether the small 2G transmitter that I occasionally hold to my head is safer / less safe than a small 3G transmitter by my head or a larger one 100m away.

Perhaps the worry is that nobody knows but I am concerned that everyone might get really worked up about the masts without giving a second thought to the 3G transmitter by their 10 year old child's ear.

Just so that everyone has an opportunity to take an informed view on this issue here is a useful website that explains how radiowaves are propagated and the design/safety issues involved with transmitter sites.

http://www.nrpb.org/understand/radiowaves/radiowaves.htm

I also feel people should be a lot more concerned about holding that little 2G handset against the side of their head than having a properly designed and regulated transmitter close to their home. I suggest you use a hands free earpiece or keep your conversations short if you are worried about radio waves entering the body.

I read today that EHDC are not making life easy for Airwave MMO2 by refusing temporary blanket planning permission in order for them to test the system. If I read it correctly Airwave MMO2 wanted to conduct a 10 day test using four sites in EH including the Hewshott Lane site in Liphook.

The worry is that EHDC might be attempting to act in our best interests but on the wrong grounds. Planning decisions are usually based on practical / aesthetic considerations (not unknown health fears). I do not want EHDC to be overruled by the Home Office, in the case of TETRA, because the Council (and us) are not being pragmatic about the issue.

The article also seems to indicate that TETRA would only cover 78% of the Country whereas the current system covers 98% - so where is the benefit to the Police.
Now to the issue of the 200 members of the Lancashire Police force who have been using the system. They have TETRA radio's in the car / pocket / by the ear. This has to be a different issue to the Liss residents who get headaches as they do not have TETRA handsets.

In summary I think this is a health issue that needs to undergo the same level of clinical trials that a new drug would require and the council planning process is necessary but only part of the correct process.
