EHDC - bins
- Robert Wright (31st Dec 2006 - 08:40:59)
Did anyone get any sort of flyer from EHDC about the Christmas bin collections? I'm certain we didn't.
The last few years, EHDC have had a policy that our bins are collected on the same day every week, irrespective of any bank holidays. So, when there have been bank holidays, they've somehow managed to double up so that the bins get collected very soon afterwards and the cycle starts again.
This year, as far as we can tell without notice, they've suddenly gone to some other system. And after three days of our bin not being collected on Friday morning (nb not a bank holiday as far as I'm aware) we check on the EHDC website to find it's not going to be collected till Tuesday. And goodness only knows what day it's going to be collected on after that (or whether the recycling bin will be collected on the day it used to be or the new day) because they can't be bothered to say.
Now for those who love to scoff at the petty domestic concerns of people who start conversations here, let me make clear I realise this is not serious in the way the war in Iraq is serious or the famine in Darfur is serious. But insofar as this forum is about local issues, I don't see why we shouldn't use it to try to get the attention of the EHDC and make clear to them our concerns. So bear with me ....
This lack of information is irritating enough in its own right. But it also means our "skanky" bin will not have been collected for over two and a half weeks and will therefore be both rank and overflowing (even though we recycle all we can). This is disgusting (in the original meaning of the word). Who's accountable for this decision? And why weren't we told about it in advance?

I couldn't agree with you more Rob!!!
It certainly is disgusting and I would like a very good explanation from the Council as to why the bins haven't been collected and also to know why we weren't informed about collections times.
Somebody isn't doing their job properly.....

We had a collection on Wednesday (or was it Thursday)of last week (normal rubbish). I assume that the recycled stuff will be collected tomorrow. There seems to be some inconsistency.

I'm not worried about the re-cycling bin....that doesn't smell...It's the 'normal rubbish' that hasn't been collected for well over 2 weeks now, so you can imagine how pleasant that is, and as our bin has been full for ages now, all the rest of the rubbish is in plastic sacks in the garden, attracting mice and rats!!!!

I saw a list of new collection dates for the holiday period (they go back to normal after the holidays) in the Liphook monthly magazine. I would put the list in here but my 2 year old has used the mag to paint all over it. sorry! So now i am also stuck with what days its collected on - i certainly haven't had any official notices to say about the changes and i think we should have had!
I have looked on EHDC but cant seem to see the list on there at all. CAn you point me in the right direction?
thanks

Christmas collection times were published on the back cover of "Partners" magazine. An electronic copy is available here :-
http://www.easthants.gov.uk/.../Winter+2006.pdf
but, basically, the collection day will be two days later than normal next week, and one day later than normal the following week.

An irritating situation, I agree, however the collection schedules were published in the local papers. Also, there is an excellent refuse tip at Bordon which was open over the holiday period and where you can take all recycling materials plus all the 'nasty waste' to be disposed of. Surely a bit of 'diy' refuse disposal is acceptable at this time of year!!

Well the bins were emptied today, which I'm very grateful for, of course!!!
However, I disagree totally with the idea of DIY disposal for 'normal household rubbish' on the grounds that if you pay for a very expensive dog, (which we do) ....why should you be expected to bark yourself!!!

Eneida,
Agree with what you say about the fiasco of bin collection. Seems to me if the same emphasis was placed on the 'normal bin' as is placed on the 'save the planet bin' we would be laughing.
Save the planet and build a tree so we can all hug it, brilliant provided we've all escaped the disease and plague to give the old oak a jolly good hugging in the first place.
One consolation I now have is that I have two bins, one for winter with wheels and one for summer without wheels. Reason being in the summer months the maggots walk the bin out on their own, I just need to get them trained and educated for the different days of collection, but I'am working hard on that for this years breeding spree. Tried double bags (one should have gone in the save the planet bin), sealing up everything in sight including the lid. Nah! no good I reckon the blue bottles have disc cutters and a oxy-acetylene torch.
Would appreciate any info for the purchase of stickers similar to the ones the council stick on your save the planet bin when they don't for whatever pathetic reason empty it. Something along the lines of " my bin lives at No7 not 30 yds up or down the road" or " thankyou for only emptying half my bin." I could then run out and plaster the sticker along the side of the wagon as it goes whistling past.
As for a bit of diy refuse work, fine no problem just furnish me with a name and address so I can apply for a refund of my council tax for doing their job for them because they are incapable of doing it correctly or efficiently in the first place.

Sooze
Well not very well publicised, I have to say. And, anyway, why should we have to buy a local paper to find out what's being done (or not) with the community charge money we've already paid?
We of course, like many others, do our diy rubbish disposal when things get out of hand. We couldn't cope otherwise. But this is supposed to be all about recycling and environmental efficiency. It doesn't strike me as being very carbon efficient or environmentally friendly to have lots of individual vehicles driving from Liphook to Bordon with a couple of bags of stinking rubbish in each. And when I went down to the dump last Friday the place was totally overwhelmed with rubbish. They certainly couldn't cope with any more people doing this than already do.
Much better, in my view, would be for EHDC to do their job properly in the first place!
Rob.

We have been concerned regarding the comments on the website over the Christmas period. The same arrangements were put in place this year as in previous years to advise residents about the changes in collections due to the days of the week on which Christmas Day and New Years day fall. These are the only two days in the year on which the contractor closes.
The crews work all of the other bank holidays throughout the year so this keeps day changes to an absolute minimum and involves Christmas and New Year only.
In order to catch up with collections in the shortest possible time frame the contractors worked each of the three Saturdays following Christmas and residents bins were emptied two days later for the first two weeks and then just one day later in the final week of changes. The only exception to this was for those whose collections normally take place on a Friday and these were carried out four days, three days and one day later during this period.
The changes were advertised, as some of your correspondents noted, on the whole of the back page of Partners magazine, on the website, in the local press and parish magazines, on local radio, at all bottle banks and in a number of local shops and Post Offices.
Collections reverted to the normal days of the week commencing 15th January.
If you would like further information regarding your refuse and recycling collections please contact us on 01730 234295.

I think the lesson to be learnt for next year is that inspite of all these various places you say the collection timetables were displayed, the message didn't get through to everybody.
There was, obviously, an awful lot of confusion because people were doing the hokey-cokey with their bins up and down the Headley Road!!!
In previous years we've had a flyer through the door giving the times....that seems the most sensible way of handling it IMO.

- rob (25th Jan 2007 - 20:52:21)
Well said, Eneida!
Who reads "Partners"? It's a complete waste of effort. And a wholly unnecessary addition to the recycling bin. Why doesn't the council cut out the middle man and take it straight from the printers to the dump? Even better: how much could we save (£, tonnes of carbon) if the Council wasn't allowed to try to puff itself up in this way at our expense?
Not sure what "parish magazine" they're referring to, but I can find nothing in the Winter 2006 Liphook Community Magazine (which, unlike "Partners", is very informative and interesting and carries lots of very useful local advertising). I'm not aware we get any other "parish magazine".
I saw nothing in the local paper about the collection cycle. Maybe that's because our local paper is the Liphook Herald. I guess the EHDC finds it difficult to reach beyond the Petersfield Post?
Anyway, all this aside, Eneida's right. You're visiting our house once a week. Is it really asking too much for someone to drop a sheet of A5 printed paper through the door?
Customer service, I call it.

You know Rob I had to laugh at your post....not in a ha ha way, but because the concept of the magazine Partners annoys me so much that it goes straight into the re-cycling bin in my house too!!!
Apart from thinking it's a great waste of our money...I also get infuriated by the title....what sort of partnership is it when one side provides all the money and the other spends it as they think fit....anyway they're not our partners but our employees :)
Eneida
PS I enjoy reading the Liphook magazine....that's interesting.
