Sainsburys
- Paul Robinson (22nd Dec 2006 - 18:11:54)

So this is Christmas.

I mention this only because Sainsbury's seem to be unaware of the impending festive break and once again are surprised by the demand for parsnips, sprouts and other seasonal fresh vegetables.

When we arrived at the store at 13.00hrs today the fresh veg gondola resembled Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. Bemused shoppers witnessed an employee clad in festive garb snapping the phenomenon with a digital camera. Empty plastic trays as far as the eye could see.

When quizzed he said that the pictures were to be sent to their area office, where no doubt they would be viewed with incredulity and logged in case anyone should question a shortfall against sales target.

It seems that the problem lay, not with the store but squarely with 'Distribution'. This was said as if they were not part of Sainsburys. Some sort of disembodied entity accountable to no one and a rule unto themselves.

I reflected on the attitude to Sainsburys if their suppliers had let them down on deliiveries. Would they be tolerant of any shortfall? I suspect not. But for their customers . . . well, . . . sad but they will be back, Cadbury's Roses anyone . . .

What is the point of having a bigger and better store if they can't fill the one they have got?

Hi

I was in Sainsburys today at about 2pm, and all of the shelves were well stocked.

Whilst it is frustrating for the consumer, I suspect the member of staff that you questioned were trying to convince you that they were working as hard as they could. Yes, distribution is still down to Sainsburys, but I can understand their not wanting to be the whipping boys for angry customers deprived of their sprouts.

Real meaning of Christmas anyone? It seems that our consumer driven world has lost sight of things (this is not aimed at you Paul, but at society in general). And yes, I do say this as a retailer :)

I know as far as some people are concerned that daring to complain about Liphook Sainsburys seems as bad as an attack on apple pie and motherhood but anyway here goes....

I visited Liphook Sainsburys just after 2.00pm on Friday 22nd December and the place was a complete shambles. There were plenty of veg but apparently the store had only just received a delivery that should have arrived at 7.00am. While it must be difficult for local staff let down by other areas of the business, this doesn't explain the complete chaos in the store. Empty boxes and discarded wrapping paper all over the place. Entry/exit to the store was so blocked by boxes and Christmas trees that staff were having to stop people entering to allow people to leave and vice versa. Heaven forbid there should have been a real emergency. The complete lack of management control was revealed when some youngsters ran out of the store having, apparently, stolen something and were chased by the entire staff of Sainsburys. OK I exaggerate a little, most of the staff on the checkouts remained in place but at least ten other Sainsburys staff chased out of the store, pushing past customers in the process.

I have know idea how the management is going to cope with a larger store, but if it is a huge success where on earth are all the new customers going to park?

I can only hope that the member of staff seen taking photos of the veg situation does manage to focus area management's attention on the mess that is Liphook's Sainsburys. - Or perhaps they don't care..

Liz -

Just on the Chrtistmas tree point. It was obviously a central office decision to block Sainsburys entrances.

Being away over the holiday, I visited two different Sainsburys in Essex and both their entrances were blocked by trees for sale.

At least the young bloke in Liphook had the sense to move the wrapping funnel outside just before Christmas when I was there.

I visited a much bigger Sainsburys and there were queues in/out of the shop, because we were limited to one trolley at a time passing through!

It'll be interesting to see when the manager/area manager sorts out the problems Liphook faces.

I know its a terrible problem this Sainsbury thing, I've had sleepless nights myself and it ruined my Christmas.
Worrying about where all the cars are going to park, no sprouts and fancy all them people shopping there in the first place, how dare they!
It's a real pain having no choice where to shop in the New Year probably loose sleep over that as well.
Hang on, who mentioned Somerfield, Waitrose, Tesco,
Asda, Lidl and Morrisons, must have been dreaming.
Off to visit my old Mum now I think she's baked an apple pie.

Steve -

Love the imagery.

Just to start another round: Lidl's - great. Can't beat them for value and quality.

Shame about all the Chavs.

Have a good New Year.

Cheers

Freddie

Not quite sure what your point is Steve. A lot of people choose to shop at Sainbury's (me included, obviously). Why should we not be able to complain if the local store is shambolic? This is the LIPHOOK website after all. If Liphook gets the 'bigger, better store' that has been promised there will be parking issues. But maybe then market forces will prevail and we'll all shop at Lidl.

Goodness if we all end up at Lidl we will be standing waiting to pay for our goods for ages - nice big shop in Bordon (with rotten veg to boot) but four people waiting to pay and thats already outnumbering the staff. Was a big que once, a customer asked the 'Duty Manager' to open another checkout and he refused.
