Railway Station?
- Steve Read (30th Nov 2006 - 20:02:01)
Curious to know after reading on the front page of the Herald ( if correct) why the PC has applied for £3000.00 from EHDC for a survey and meeting to work out how to enable people with a disability to get across to the southbound platform.
Seems to me you either go over or under, thus £3000.00 saved. Bet it won't be that simple!
How do the same people get on at Haslemere if they are heading North?
More to the point why are we having to pay for this and not the train company, whoever that is this week.

Quite agree Steve, maybe the £3000 would be better spent providing a safe route for pedestrians to get to the station in the first place, then there may not be such a demand for disabled access.
But, of course, the disabled might not want to travel on SWT next year along with some of the rest of us. Apparently our nice long distance 444 class (white) trains are to be moved to the Southampton line and replaced with the 5 seat across surburban 450 class (blue) trains. I sat on one to Liphook recently and complained of backache all the following day.
Stagecoach just won a new 10 year contract but are comitted to increase capacity by 20%. This is how they are doing it - putting a stranger on your lap and by taking out the toilets. I'm sure there will be plenty of First Class capacity though. (But even that is four across instead of three).
Lucky the fares aren't going up by much more than the council tax then.

What a waste of money. Don’t want to be rude to any one that has a problem with movement etc but think money could be better spent on our local bus transport ant and making that more accessible to disabled people.

my mother in law uses the train more than me and is CONSTANTLYcomplaining about having to cross the bridge at liphook. is there a underpass then?
also, hate to point out the obvious but its not just the disabled but also people with prams and toddlers that struggle with the bridge, hence why i travel by car more often than not. if it was easier to do it the i would use the train more often.
(oh and elderly ladies with lots of luggage struggle on the bridge too.) perhaps spending money on the station to make it more accessible for a wider range of people would be a good idea... ??
