carnival fun
- Alex Cameron (26th Oct 2003 - 00:21:04)

Hi All

I just wanted to say what a joy it was to come back from London tonight (sat) and see the carnival in full swing as usual - kids puking up, broken glass, understaffed police trying to cope etc.

I was slightly disappointed that i couldn't get a beer from sainsburys because the entire drink section was closed off, even though people had been apparently stealing from it regardless. Then finding out i was one of the last customers because the store had to close early was a little disturbing.

The store manager basically said their specially-drafted-in security people had essentially been overrun and the police didn't want to know...

What is it about carnival night that turns our little town into the wild west?

Reading your comments from last year, I was just wondering if you or anyone else for that matter, would be making an effort for this years Carnival.
It doesn't have to be an all singing, all dancing, the-dogs-doings of a float, just find some funny clothes or a costume, get some make-up on and carry a collection tin, but most of all have a laugh. (once you get a beer or two inside you, who gives a dam what you look like) - You may even enjoy it.

If of course you have so much money and this sort of thing is beyond you, why not make a donation to the Carnival Committee or Sponsor a float - they do take a considerable amount of time, effort, materials and money to construct and all donations are gratefully accepted!!.

Note to the Editor - Can we have some of last years/previous years photos put on the website, specially the overall winners (Shrek) - They were just fantastic. It might even get more people involved.

I can only agree with Les.
Why do people always have to look at the down side of things. If you want a beer or two for the evening why not plan ahead and buy it earlier in the day.

As for the carnival itself, what a fantastic effort by everyone, including the short staffed police, to put on such a spectacle in such a small village.

i wish more people would support it rather than slag off the organisation.
Try helping.

I'll be doing a little bit over the weekend, delivering programmes down London Road. Lots of others do much more, but I do know the organisers are short of volunteer marshalls. If you can help, call Jane Laver on 01428 722688.

No pay - but guaranteed fun on the night and you're helping lots of local groups by assisting in the general aim to raise charitable money.

As for the Sainsbury's stuff - well, they got so fed up with underage kids stealing and running out of the shop, they decided to close the alcohol section.

Don't forget, you can still wander down to Station Road and buy at either General Wine of Balfours. Actually, Station Road/Portsmouth Road is quite a good place to watch all the floats proceed. Then you can walk up to the Green or The Square for all the sideshows afterwards.

cheers!

Freddie

The Guys who go around selling the glow in the dark knick-knacks and stuff - do they contribute to the Carnival financially?
They must make a few bob on the night, (and I bet they don’t pay tax either!).

Re: carnival fun
- Chris (7th Sep 2004 - 18:24:27)

...a bit like the honest souls that run some of the stalls at the Milland fair, the ones that fleece kids and adults alike as they attempt to perform impossible tasks like score under 10 with three broken darts. Let's have less of the dodgy, gypsy fairground and more of the local, charitable stuff at these events and it will be far more attractive.

Re: carnival fun
- gr (7th Sep 2004 - 21:14:40)

Sainsburys will be closed this carnival So I am told not only did kids steal they rode bikes inside the store and demolished the wc's

So I do not blame Sainsburys for closing up 100%

It is a shame to see a village I have grown up in go the way it has
The younger generation have little or no respect for anything ( Yes a few spoil it for the many )
But what can you do there is no disapline these days , even if you do say something you liable to be charged under some new bullying rule or such like.
or a brick through your window.
back to the carnival it seems to be the only day in te year the whole village supports itself ? , and we do not have the old village fete in the rec ( too many rules and regs or can this be changed ??????

Re: carnival fun
- S (8th Sep 2004 - 14:18:54)

Gr, couldn't agree with you more. I too have grown up in this village. It's a only a patch on the place it used to be. I don't pity Sainsburys for closing I still hold them responsible for Liphooks downfall. Oh how I wish for those massive OSU hangars to be back.

The kids in Liphook have no respect whatsoever, they are rude and ignorant, fortunately I'm still young enough to make sure they learn a lesson or two the hard way. ;-)

I use to be able to walk round this village and be able to recognise a good majority of the people. Nowadays the place is full of Woolleys.

Re: carnival fun
- Dick (9th Sep 2004 - 19:08:38)

It is the only day that the village supports itself and that is a big shame. I too believe that the village fete should be revived but who would organise it ?

The carnival committee are stretched enough as it is and LIDBA only concentrate on their bike ride, so what other organisation does that leave..
ANSWER> None.

It does leave the door open for another organisation to be formed, but as the village is now full of "Woollies" do we have enough original villagers to carry off such a thing. See answer above..

We live in hope..

Re: carnival fun
- Paul (9th Sep 2004 - 19:15:59)

Les asked if the street vendors selling balloons and neon necklaces contributed anything to the carnival.

As one of the marshals on Carnival night it is our unenviable task to solicit contributions from these parties and, as far as we are able, this is done, even if it is often given with bad grace. Some pay up willingly others argue the toss about freedom of the individual to make a living and the public highway being owned by no one in particular If this line is persisted with then they are invited to show their traders licences to the nearest constable that usually results in an amicable outcome for all.

Carnival night is great fun for all especially those involved with the organisation. If any one would like to get join us on the night then contact Jane Laver (telephone number elswhere in this thread)

- Natalie (22nd Sep 2004 - 21:10:54)

Dear all,

I am 20 years old have lived in the village all my life and have not yet missed a carnival. I started taking part when i was around six, and after being on various floats with different clubs and organizations i have found the brownies and guides float to be the most fun and rewarding. This year is to be no exception as we have yet again a few prizes to maintain not to mention a great show to put on for the awaiting crowds.
The carnival should be viewed as a highlight of liphooks social calender and not another chance for people to moan about the youth of today there are hundereds of young people who take part in the carnival every year and many of them believe it or not are new to the village.
like many others we have already started our carnival preperation but for any of you who are thinking about getting a float together it is not too late, come and join in be part of the fun-it really is a fantasic night!!

Re: carnival fun
- Dick (22nd Sep 2004 - 23:05:59)

Natalie,
Well said.
I too have started on a float and it will, god willing be ready in time for the big night.
I started at the age of five and this carnival will be my 43rd.
Come on Liphook, lets make this the biggest yet..

To all who live on the headley road,

As i was sat in the traffic caused by those so called tempoary traffic lights yesterday morning i had an idea.........why dont you all get together and create your own carnival float using the road works as your theme you could ask morrisons/transco/whoever they are if you could borrow some of their equipment to deck out the float seeing as they dont seem to be using it..............not sure on your chances of winning best on the move mind you!!!!!! :-)

Natalie

Re: carnival fun
- AndyW (14th Oct 2004 - 11:01:52)

Sorry It's already been done.

When the village was last blighted with roadworks for months (During the remodelling of the square following the bypass being built) The Scouts entered the Carnival with the theme " Get Stuck In. Liphook" the Scouts and Cubs all dressed as roadsigns and road cones. As I remember it we won a prize on the night.

The Scouts like the Guides have always been involved in the Carnival and hope to give the young people involved a night to remember and show the rest of the community that not all young people are rude, destructive etc.
Last year our float " Oliver, Pick a Pocket or Two"won 1st prize in the large group section for young people, just pipping the Guides into 2nd place.
Battle recommences between the 2 organisations again on 30th October.
Keep a lookout for both entries they are bound to be worth a look.

Andy Woodage
Group Scout Leader.

Re: carnival fun
- Natalie (14th Oct 2004 - 19:58:34)

yes, we were beaten by the boys!!!!!!!

but as we all know its the taking part that counts not the winning isnt it??.............yeah right, thats why we all spend nearly a year stressing over how to deck out a massive lorry in the pouring rain and wind to match a theme chosen, and then get 50 guides and brownies into costume and down the longmoor road in one piece in time to meet the float to be judged.
and yes it is a great event to be part of even if it is freezing and your wearing a ridiculous coustume its always so much better if you win a prize for everyone's hard efforts so all i can say is..........................

BRING IT ON CUBS AND SCOUTS!!!

Natalie.

Re: carnival fun
- liz (29th Oct 2004 - 22:10:04)

i agree. i loved being a part of the brownie and guides carnival floats! it was such a buzz to be dancing around the villiage behind the lorry with every1 having a laugh! even though i dont take part anymore i will still be going along 2 support and have fun, cant wait!

Re: carnival fun
- Natalie (31st Oct 2004 - 18:02:34)

A big well done to all of you who took part last night the floats were some of the best iv seen in a long time.
it was yet another fantastic carnival night with all the rivalry and excitetment everyone seemed to be having a great time.

i was just wondering who won which prizes as being on a float you dont really get to see or hear what is happening too much. Anybody know who won the tim weatley??? and best over all???

A big thank you to all that helped ceate our float especially those who were there to help build and then dismantel the float yesterday.(A very long day but well worth it)
A massive well done to all the brownies and guides you were all stars on the night and very much deserved your prizes, it isnt easy dancing in the square in front of thousands of people as a teenager you know. i am very proud of you all.

thanks to the carnival committee who yet again did a fab job.

we won 1ST CHILDRENS(over 50) and the much coveted BEST ON THE MOVE.

also a big well done to the cubs you did great last night and proved it by winning your 1st CHILDRENS(under 50)prize. :-)

Natalie.

Re: carnival fun
- Alex Cameron (31st Oct 2004 - 23:18:35)

Missed it this year, but got an eyeful of revolting drunk children walking in the middle of the road later on. Any news/drama to report?

Re: carnival fun
- Chris (1st Nov 2004 - 08:19:37)

...there were at least two enormous, unnecessary, "I'm only init for the money, init" candy floss stalls taking up prime position and loads of gypsies ripping the kids off at the fun fare.

Re: carnival fun
- Eneida Nelson (1st Nov 2004 - 08:29:50)

Hi Natalie

I totally agree with you. It was a splendid Carnival and everybody should be congratulated!!

However, I'm very curious about you last paragraph - Do the Scouts regard everyone under 50 as children??

Re: carnival fun
- natalie (1st Nov 2004 - 08:43:19)

There are two categories for childerns floats, one for those floats with more than 50 children on and one for those with less than 50. its to help make it more fair!!

hope this helps the confusion.

Natalie.

Re: carnival fun
- Sarah (2nd Nov 2004 - 16:12:42)

I couldn't make it this year and was wondering whether people thought that this years carnival was a success compared to other years? Did the roadworks create any problems - good timing I must say!

Re: carnival fun
- jolly rodger (12th Nov 2004 - 12:03:32)
