The Carnival
- Steve Read (27th Oct 2006 - 12:05:08)
Just like to wish all involved with this years carnival the best of wishes for a great evening. Having been involved for a great many years especially as a youngster (I know thats a long time ago!) I for one appreciate all the hard work and organisation involved in putting on this great evening.
Forget all the petty moans and groans, take it for what it is, something unique and steeped in history and a long standing tradition for Liphook.
Have a great night.
Regards, Steve.

Hi, Steve -
Well, I thought last night was good fun. Maybe not quite so many floats as last year but the standard was very high. The Bournemough Marching Band in their Spiderman costumes were a great opener.
Adrian Bird's "Maria" costume made me laugh - especially when he turned round and I saw what he was wearing!! You had to see it to believe it!!!
Look forward to seeing all the photos on the Carnival website.

Well Done to everyone who took part last night!
As we were on a float we didn't get to find out who won which prizes-if anyone else knows please let us know.
Thanks

Freddie,
I also thought the number of floats was well down on previous years, however was it just me or were there even more people watching this time around.
If some of the requests on here for transport are anything to go by maybe that was some of the problem.
However congrats to all who made the effort.
Regards, Steve.
ps: Eneida, bought a couple of the balloons Saturday night, and yes walked home with them, took some stick in the pub and stuck them on the pond, not seen the heron yet. I bet he's waiting for them to go down. The Dolphin and the silly face look pretty nifty up the garden.

I agree a cracking night which is our fifth carnival, but I have to say I was both shocked and angered by some of the behaviour on a family event.
The language in front of my young children was disgucting and having to witness the asbo yoof urinating in the steet at 6pm was awful, maybe the square and surrounding streets need to be alcohol free zones ?? Something needs to be done before this wonderful event and out lovely village are ruined...

I agree. It is ludicrous to keep shops selling alcohol (like the Coop) open at a time when the village is attracting scum from miles around. The police were called to the Coop early in the evening to sort out an incident (shoplifting, I guess); and then there was an almighty punchup later on, all fuelled by alcohol. Perhaps we need to rethink the whole set up (incl the funfair) to see if we can make it less of an attraction for those who merely want to use it as an excuse to cause trouble. Those who go to so much effort to make floats to entertain the community deserve better.

i actually thought the police did a very good job of dealing with the troubles especially the fight that broke out at around 10:15 outside sainsburys.
whilst i agree with the comments of lack of floats this year, it was a good night for every one particually the children both on and off the floats we had around 10 girls with our float that had never even seen the carnival let alone been part of it, iv done it for years and still get a little nervous as we are faced with the crowds in the square so hats off to them for putting on such a good show.
tad confused bout the prize giving again this year tho as it seems that you can now win 1st and best overall.
And the prize for disorganized commitee goes too...........
also a big well done and thank you must be said to the scouts and anyone else who helped make the village look as though nothing had happened on sunday.

- Dick (4th Nov 2006 - 19:01:16)
It did seem that the amount of floats was down this year but i must add that if a little more effort was made by those living in the village and surrounding areas, this could be a long and fantastic carnival.
You cannot fault the committee for their commitment, but maybe we could fault the villagers for a lack of it....
It is over 100 years old now but with the apathy shown by those living here, and i don't just mean the "Newcomers" it may not see 110 years...
It is easy to sit at a computer and complain about it, but maybe, just maybe those same people could get off their computer chairs and actually do something.
It's not just those who write on this website. I have spoken to many people who say, "It wasn't very good this year" and my reply is always the same, DO SOMETHING NEXT YEAR THEN. The reply is always the same as well "I don't have the time"
Do what i do, "Make bloody time"............

I agree with Dick
My family and friends have taken part in many carnivals over the years
The people that complain usually have not help or taken part in any way apart from to complain
If they realizes how much time and effort is put into the carnival I am sure there views would change ???
If the complainers think they can do better that show us what you can do !!
This is the one event that everybody from the village at some point should be involved with it is supposed to bring the village together
The only effect all your negative comments will have is to end the carnival and similar events
Come one everybody where is your COMMUNITY SPIRIT ?????

Re: The Carnival
- Paul Robinson (5th Nov 2006 - 14:53:37)
As someone who has helped with carnival night for many years I can confirm that there were less floats this year than in recent years but this was not due to apathy.
I understand that employers and operators with access to flat bed and articulated vehicles have been reluctant to lend their vehicles as they have done in the past due to insurance implications. In short insurance companies are estimating the cost of one night's usage to be in the region of £500! All the more reason to consider entering a Push-Pull float which as Lidba admirably demonstrate year after year can be an innovative and just as spectacular exhibit.
Another reason for the paucity of floats this year might just have something to do with the almost continuous rain we had in the three weeks run up to the carnival.
However on the plus side it must be said that the quality of floats this year was better than ever, if that is possible, and it was good to see teams from Bramshott Club and elsewhere who were back in the procession after many years absence.
For the record the marshals and the police believe that the crowds of spectators that lined the entire route this year were the biggest yet and about 30% up on last year.

Re: The Carnival
- Dick (5th Nov 2006 - 18:51:45)
I completely agree with what you say Paul, but it does not have to cost that much.
Most of the materials can be begged or borrowed and in doing so may then involve those that have lent materials.
There is also the Insurance... Why then, can the Insurance companies in Liphook put something back into the community that they take so much from, by paying for a block Liability Insurance for the floats, push and pull etc as part of their commitment to the carnival/village spirit.
There were complaints that the Bike Shop did not do anything for the LIDBA Cycle ride except open on that Sunday (Unusually) to sell parts etc. Is it not the same with the Insurance Companies who readily take your money, then haggle over a claim and do nothing else for the Village.
Come on Liphook, Don't let this fantastic event die a slow death, do something about it...

Hi
Having read the above I think what you all need is a company in Ringwood who do 24hr carnival float insurance, the web site is www.events-insurance.co.uk
I think you will find them very helpful and reasonable.
I once investigated the posibilty of using them but we are totally insured by another means.
Thanks once again thanks to everyone who helped us with the Guide and Brownie float and helped our girls shine on the night.
It did appear that there were fewer floats and I totally agree with you Dick - make time- just go for it ! It really is a village thing and most of us who organise floats are yocal locals - please, please come and join in - once you have been on or with a float you won't want to stand at the side of the road again.
It is a shame that the booklet was not produced this
year. I think the commitee would be suprised how many people collect these. I know its a financial thing but they were nice and the story each year from the float builders was always a joy.
Anyway well done to everyone - especially the Newtownies your float was special and you must have put a great deal of time and hard work in. What have you done with that Lion? Our Chitty Chitty Bang Bang from last year was in taken apart and in the bin the next morning.
That I think sums up how float builders are - obsessed for six weeks- then to all be burnt or binned! We are mad!!!! See you next year.

Re: The Carnival
- Dick (8th Nov 2006 - 18:49:12)
Jane,
Thanks for the info on the insurance company. It might be worth posting again about six weeks before the next carnival.
Also thanks for you kind comments about our float, and yes it was a lot of hard work but as always, well worth it.
As for the animals on the float, well they have had a new lease of life. Normally they would have been burnt or binned but this year we found them new homes.
"Gerald" the giraffe can be found sitting outside Cooper Second hand shop in Hindhead. He will be off soon to raise money for "Children in Need".
"Lenny" the lion is now residing in Newtown Road where 2 children happily play with him all day.
But the big thanks should go to all those who entered the carnival. I salute you all and hopefully will see you all again next year plus many others. Spread the word. !!
