Rubbish in Headley Road
- Eneida Nelson (23rd Oct 2003 - 07:45:36)

Does anyone agree with me that the grass verges between the Co-op and the pavements near to the Fish and Chip shop are a disgrace... there is now even a dead trolley !! What can we do about it...

Living just a lollypop wrapper away from the Co-op I have to agree that the litter in this area is unacceptable.
Recently a 4' x 4' wooden pallet has been left on the pavement near my house!

Some years ago this problem was recognised by the retailers concerned and a sponsored litter collection scheme was initiated but it was short lived. Maybe the shops concerned should be approached with a view to improving litter collection points near the shops and periodic clean ups of their forecourts where the litter starts before the wind redistributes it evenly along the road.

Paul,

I couldn't agree with you more. I think the Co-op and the Fish shop should take much more responsibility for the rubbish generated by their customers... and perhaps a litter bin attached to the bus stops might also help.

As if the rubbish problem surrounding the Co-op were not enough, some kind soul has stolen (or removed) the green litter bin that used to be sited next to the 'phone box on the corner of Tower Road and Headley Road.

So now the few people who bothered to use the bin to get rid of their rubbish have no choice but to chuck it on the ground and the area is a disgrace.

Anyone read Father Murtugh's message in the latest Community Magazine? How I agree with him!

I've always thought walking from the Blooming Square up the Headley Road was a bit like "all fur coat and no knickers". So how about everyone keeping the pavement or grass verge outside their own houses clear of rubbish. That would be a start...yes I know we pay for this service already but we are the ones who suffer.

I would also like the Parish Council (or whoever) to take a far more robust approach to shops like the Co-op and others to clean up their act, because whatever tactics they're using at the moment, if any, clearly aren't working.

Hi, Eneida -

Agree with everything you've said. It's the District Council who can do something - they have powers to enforce clean-ups. Worth an e-mail or call to Penns Place, Petersfield. Speak to Envornmental Services. I'll do the same. If enough of us ask for help, they'll take action.

But looking at the bigger picture: why do people litter so much? Whatever happened to the community spirit of Keep Britain Tidy?

The Liphook in Bloom team are all volunteers and do a great job for us. We are in the final four in the competition for the Best Kept Village in Hampshire. Amazing. Yet we could all help the team, as you suggest, by taking responsibility for our own stretch of road/verge.

I'll be cutting my verge tomorrow - just so long as it doesn't rain!!

rgds

Freddie
