carnival book
- Nat (6th Oct 2006 - 15:42:16)
having just picked up my copy of this years carnival booklet i was most disappointed to discover it is not a booklet at all this year!!! but some leaflet style hand out that i think is really rubbish, sorry but i do.
we have collected up those books for years and love to look back at all the old pictures and stories where as this leaflet contains very few pictures no stories from the queen or princess(which im sure they were looking foward to writing) it also has no mention of who won which prizes in fancy dress or even on the night last year!
this site has a whole page deddicated to the carnival in which the committee ask for those entering a float to fill in a booking form in order to take part but the leaflet states you can just turn up on the night so whats the point in the form???
sorry to moan but if your gunna do something its worth doing it properly.

Nat,
Like yourself I was disappointed with the Carnival "booklet" this year, as i always enjoy reading the various stories and articles which are usually in it.
Also, I noticed that the 'Pubs & Clubs' section are described as being "singled out so the others get a chance to win!" Does this mean that the Carnival Committee believe no other float is up to the standard of the Pubs & Clubs?!?

Much the same feelings here, thought it was a load of rubbish as well.
As for the pubs and clubs being the best sorry there are many great floats every year that are far better than what is entered by the pubs and clubs.
What gets me is that the judges do not take into consideration the effort and amount of time that is spent building the floats. It should not be judged on just how it looks or how good the entertainment is but also what effort is involved.

This has to be stopped, manipulating results so that "all can win prizes". Whatever happened to "may the best [man] win"?
It happened last year when a float that won best overall did not win best in it's class.
It is not the team that puts in the most effort that wins the football match, it's the team that scores the most goals.
"And this years award for the aesthetically unpleasing float that involved the most amount of effort is..." just does not sound right.
We need a more democratic way of choosing the winning floats otherwise the "you won last year" brigade might just discourage the best from entering.

looks like the carnival judges went to the same place as the teachers at liphook junior school to learn how to give out prizes "its the taking part that counts" weather its sports or carnival it seems. what a load of utter rubbish. I never took part in a race at school not to win nor do we enter a wicked float that takes loads of effort just for the fun of it, yes the carnival is great fun and we all have a brilliant night and we all cant wait for it to come round every year but lets face it people we all only enter to WIN!!!

I quite agree, Mark! What's the point of a competition that discourages competition?! The float that wins first prize in each category should be the 'best' one. It follows that the "best over all" winner would be the winner oaur of all the category winners, i.e. "the best of the best."
