Ellen -

You might want to take a look at:
http://www.electricbluesclub.co.uk/blues_jams.html

Can't vouch for Haslemere venues as I rarely go there. I think the Pin and Cushion have live gigs sometimes.

Mike Grimes may well know what's best locally.
Mike - you out there tonight?

Freddie

Hi Ellen,

Log onto www.ents24.com. Use the search bar to find what you are looking for and enter a post code (or part - e.g. GU30) and it will give you a list of all the live music, etc., in the area. Hope you enjoy your evening.

Hello,
Get yourself a copy of The Haslemere Magazine and music supplement (just out this week). Lots of info on various venues local to you.

Enjoy yourselves and remember what your mother told you.

Wow guys! many thanks very much appreciated

Re: Places to go
- Mike Grimes (5th Oct 2006 - 18:05:53)

The only place around that I can think of that does regular live music is The Farnham Maltings

http://www.farnhammaltings.co.uk

I don't think they have anything on Saturday, however.

Tonight it's Julie Felix. I expect you to be there Freddie after what you said about her Liphook gig.

Hampshire CC used to do events around here but they seem to be more frequent in the south of the county now.

The other one to keep an eye on is

http://www.eclecticlivemusic.co.uk

Some events in Haslemere but most at Chiddingfold or Cranleigh.

Nights out locally seem to involve a lot of preplanning, not my forte.

Re: Places to go

Had to miss Ms Felix.

But, Alan the Accordion did a gig at The Three Moles pub last Saturday. I've never heard of the place but apparently it's off the Petworth-Midhurst Road, just about opposite the turning where the Halfway House pub is.

You go up the road opposite and find The Three Moles. They have live music on the first Saturday of the month and Alan told me it's one of the best gigs he's done. Real range of music with three accordion players, guitarists etc etc. They were ranging from Irish folk songs to shanties to jazz.

Don't know any more but worth checking out.

Freddie

Hey Freddie,

Was Alan the Accordian in a group with Herbert Huffs the Harmonica and Percy Plonks the Piano. I think I've got a record of theirs!

Re: Places to go
- Mike Grimes (10th Oct 2006 - 01:09:18)

I think you really need to be prepared for this one (Three Moles), the web site says that it rarely kicks off before 10.00pm and that if you are booking a taxi it should not be before 12.30am.

Otherwise it sounds great, anyone want to share a Taxi?

Re: Places to go
- Freddie Dawkins (11th Oct 2006 - 12:59:33)

Hi, Steve and Mike -

Steve - no, I think Alan was booked on his own but probably busked a bit with the other guys.

Mike - having checked ther website, agree we should share a taxi, I'll have two seats. Anyone else fancy it? Steve?

Re: Places to go
- Steve Read (11th Oct 2006 - 17:51:11)

Freddie,

Put me down mate I'll give it a go. I've heard the 3 moles is the place to be. Cutting edge venue out in the sticks. Just give me time to look out my smock and straw hat. Forget a taxi I'll warm up the Massey Fergusson with the trailor on the back chuck some straw bales up on and a tarpaulin over the top. I can fit one other in the cab with me.
Talking of moles I had more than 3 running round in my garden a while back turning the lawn into a game of trench warfare. A good friend suggested finding the run and pouring Jay's disinfectant in, the smell of which irritates their sense of smell and they move on without harm. It worked and they have not returned, nextdoor have got a problem mind you. Just thought it might help anybody else out there with the criiters.

Re: Places to go
- Freddie Dawkins (14th Oct 2006 - 00:10:22)

Hi, Steve -

That's a car load for the next Moles night then. I'll sort cab with Mike and work out times etc.

I have a mole story you might like. I used to live in Chiltley Way. Lovely garden, amazing old trees etc etc.

Woke up one morning and The Mole had arrived. Piles of earth all over the place in back garden. Then he moved to front garden and ravaged that.

Pushed in two of those sonic deflector thingies and they worked a treat and of course they don't harm Moley. Drove him to next door's garden (Didn't tell neighbour at the time ;-).

Anyways, neighbour gets driven mad by mole destroying his lawns and eventually calls in The Mole Man. He sets traps. Comes back next day and spots moley activity. Opens back door of his van and proclaims: "Got the very thing for that little chap..." and whips out a 12 bore shotgun, plunges it into small mole hole and blasts the critter. Then digs the corpse out. Poor neighbour couldn't believe his eyes, it all happened so fast. Felt terrible aboue the mole and never had The Mole Man back, even though moles occasionally visit.

Interesting to see a mole. They are much smaller than I had imagined and their pelt really is amazingly soft.

cheers

Freddie

Freddie,
Keep me posted about the 3 moles and count me in.
Now we've either stunk, deafened or blasted the mole problem any ideas on Herons.
Tried putting a dummy heron out, the real one was trying to mate with it. Also tried a sensor where a light and noise comes on, he only looks at it and it helps him see on the dark mornings. Protected bird otherwise I would be reaching for the gun.

Regards,
Steve

Hi, Steve -

We've had the heron "problem" with stealing fish for years. Trouble is, they are magnificent birds and almost soundless. Amazing to watch them pop over a hedge and glide down at sunset.

Anyway, only thing that I've found deters them, apart from very alert dogs, is to put posts - say, 18 inches plus, around pond area and tie string, fishing line, something to create a double line barrier. The herons will not try to walk through such a barrier.

Much tidier than wire/mesh/nets over the pond. And it doesn't harm the herons, just deters them.

Good luck!

Freddie

Re: Places to go
- Allan (18th Oct 2006 - 01:00:27)

Freddie,
I know you would not knowingly exaggerate on any subject, but, could I respectfully relate the following mole tale.
'Tis an old tinky saying in Scotland ;tell no mole lies, 'case you dies.
Some years ago, we had a gentleman of Haslemere come in to T.B.F.I. for ample refreshment at lunchtime. He told me that he had trapped a golden mole, oh,yes he said. And I will bring you proof tomorrow, said he, in the form of a photograph. Well, as you know, I'm easy going on things such as,and didn't think too much beyond it.
Next day, he came back. Told me that his wife had chucked him out and could he stay here for 1 night until he sorted out his differences with said wife; and, by the way, here is the photo of the golden mole. I promise you, said he, may God strike me down, it's genuine.
It looked wettish in the photo. He died two days later!!!!

Steve, someone once told me that if you have a helium filled balloon, rather like a Zeppelin, permanently tethered above you pond it puts off herons....no idea if it works, but worth a try although I think it might look a bit strange :)

Re: Places to go
- Mike Grimes (18th Oct 2006 - 23:23:16)

Given that the thread started with "Places to Go" maybe a bloody great baloon in the garden might just indicate a heron twitchers paradise.

Zeppelin though, I'm not sure that the "Led" variety are young enough to play any more, neither are the "Pink" variety of Floyd... but a Floyd tribute band

www.perfect-alibi.net

will be doing a (I'm told) two hour show at Chiddingfold a week on Saturday. Apparently they are very good and well worth the £11 - £15 entrance fee.

Contrived a bit maybe, but have I got the thread back on track?

Re: Places to go
- Freddie Dawkins (19th Oct 2006 - 00:40:55)

Hi, Allan -

Golden Mole, mmm. Well I'd say it could be possible. Like an albino maybe?

My weimeramer has most unusual golden patches on her head...

cheers

Freddie

Re: Places to go
- Steve Read (19th Oct 2006 - 22:18:06)

Eneida,
Quality idea, off to get the balloon this weekend and give it a go. Many thanks.

Freddie,
Tried the old fishing line years ago, trouble was came out one morning in the summer and found a bat dead wrapped up in it. Also watched the heron picking his way over and through it. Came out this morning early and he had bought his mate with him, two of the damn things having breakfast.

Mike,
Last resort if the Zeppelin dont work will get some speakers set up on a timer and fire into them some Floyd at 6.00am. What with next doors current mole problem it should just about finish them off with an early morning roll call of Meddle & Echoes. They are twitching enough as it is.

Apologies for taking it back off thread again.

You could try the Hawkley in they do food and music pretty successfully.
