HIGH DRAMA FOR WALKING GROUP
Ann Smith of the Liphook U3A Walking Group was not expecting anything unusual when they assembled for their walk around Frensham Little and Great ponds on Thursday, 2nd August, but there was a surprise in store!
Everything appeared to be normal as the group got under way, with the usual pep talk about the route, together with reminders of safety. The walk itself was very easy under foot with recent rains making walking through sand more comfortable and the views over the water were very attractive even with the occasional drizzle. At one stage bracken had to be fought through which was probably the most testing part of the walk.
However, high drama struck when speeding emergency service vehicles were encountered on the return to the starting point. A serial killer had struck with the intention of disposing of the bodies in Frensham Little Pond. So, Ann reports, “I am not exaggerating when I say high drama. Well, that was the tag line when I interviewed the director of the film being shot there. Maybe I should add that the emergency services were mistakenly called out by somebody thinking everything was for real. This of course all added to the scene.”
Chris Leadbeater, the walk leader, should be congratulated on laying on such entertainment.
OTHER SUMMER NEWS FROM LIPHOOK U3A
Theatregoers
It’s just after 4 p.m. and a crowd is beginning to gather outside the Millennium Centre in Liphook on Thursday, 26th July. Then, at 4.15 a coach arrives and the assembled gathering clamber on board. The leader of this group announces that the coach will soon depart for Whitehill, where a few more will board, and then we will all travel on to the Mill at Sonning, arriving just after six o’clock for dinner and a performance of “Cash on Delivery”
Liphook U3A Theatre Club is on the move!
Sure enough, just after six, the coach-load arrive at their destination with time for a relaxing drink, either in the old mill house or outside by the river, before making for the dining room.
Once seated in the dining room, two more Liphook members join the party, having arrived under their own steam by narrow boat! The full party of 39 members, having enjoyed an excellent meal, made their way into the small 215 seat air-conditioned (thank heavens on this hot evening) auditorium and settled down to enjoy the performance of this most entertaining farce of truly “Whitehall Theatre” proportions.
The happy party arrived safely back in Liphook shortly before midnight having had a wonderful evening out.
Keeping track on the past
On most second Tuesdays each month, the Local History Group can be found in Liphook Village hall listening to a guest speaker talking on subjects as diverse as Jane Austen and The Mary Rose. Every June though, the Group embarks on a field trip that they know as their "June Jaunt". The venue is chosen by the Group Members and past visits have included Butser Ancient Farm, Whitchuch Silk Mill and Portchester Castle.
This year, so interesting was Dudley Hooley's April presentation on the history of RAF Tangmere, that the overwhelming vote was for a conducted tour of the Military Aviation Museum in Tangmere village and despite the dreadful storms and flooding that were then threatening to cut-off the airfield, eighteen Group Members enjoyed a fascinating few hours with iconic aircraft such as the Hurricane and Spitfire and viewing the numerous intriguing exhibits highlighting the varying important roles of RAF Tangmere before, during and after World War II. All brought to life with the help of knowledgeable and witty commentary from the Museum's volunteer guides - and capped by a well earned tea break in the NAAFI !
Keep strolling
So far, this has not been the best of summers, but the spirits of the strollers group have certainly not been dampened! They venture out on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month to enjoy leisurely strolls, usually lasting about an hour or so, followed by a refreshing drink and a bite to eat at a nearby hostelry. The rain has spoilt things on two or three occasions, but come the next stroll and people are eager to go, and in bigger and bigger numbers!
Recent outings have been to Chapel Common, Itchenor & Chichester Harbour, exploring the outskirts of Liss and the very latest one was to the Civil War Battlefield at Cheriton. This occasion saw the biggest turnout ever when everyone enjoyed beautiful sunshine, followed afterwards by splendid food at the Hinton Arms
These are only a very few of the many activity groups at Liphook U3A and if you feel like joining our U3A, in any of its groups you can rest assured there will be exciting together with mind stretching activities. Perhaps killings could be going a step too far!

The next monthly meeting in the Millennium Hall will be on Monday, 3rd September at 2 p.m. when the speaker will be Dr Michael Thomas from the National Trust. He will give an illustrated talk about the Vyne at Basingstoke and its owners. This is a slight change to our published programme.
