Play streets
- Susie (14th Aug 2012 - 20:03:29)

While on holiday this year I passed a few streets with official and home made 'play street' signs.
What a great idea even if it only works to make drivers a little bit more aware that children are running, scootering, biking about.
I'm thinking of putting up my own sign on our street but maybe the Parish council could also look into it?

Nice idea in theory.

Doubt the PC would be interested in involving themselves: and I hope they don't as I think it would be asking for trouble.

Official signs would give the impression that playing in the street is something to be encouraged, when really, in a town like Liphook where the vast majority of homes have adequate garden space, and we are surrounded by woodland and play-parks with tracks suitable for cycling, scooting and playing, we don't exactly need to designate play-streets do we!

Roads were built for cars, pavements were built for pedestrians. Children shouldnt be encouraged to play in the street, it is dangerous (signs or not!).

Maybe an alternative suggestion to make our streets safer for children would be to take them to the park instead!

And just before anyone jumps down my throat - i'm not anti-children or anti-playing or anti-fun.. I just think that signs of this kind would leave children thinking that it is a safe place to play, or a suitable place to play... And really is just isn't.

If you live on a quiet cul-de-sac and feel that your children have enough sense to play safely outside on the street then fair enough, but I think that officiating it is a bad idea.

I think that what Susie was referring to about play streets is that it warns drivers that there is a high possibility that kids will be playing in the street. Some of the streets around Liphook have lots of kids playing/riding bikes etc and it just gives a bit of warning to drivers. Personally I think that it's a good idea.
