bramshott church
- heidi (4th Aug 2012 - 19:51:34)
Today i visited the graveyard, I was absolutely disgusted with how overgrown this has become.. Some gravestones could be barely seen due to the grass and weeds being so tall. Please tell me who is responsible for the up keep of this, as this is distressing? I visit a few graves in different areas and this is by far the most overgrown i have ever seen!

Oh how strange!
I made a post, about this, this morning/ lunch time!,...mine hasnt gone live yet!
But i totally agree, with you Heidi,..its an absolute disgrace!i too was there yesterday, and cannot believe how overgrown it is!
disgusting to see,....assumably, some family members of loved ones, buried there, have had a go, at strimming some parts of the churchyard,...and you can actually see, where someone has mowed a pathway, to a family members grave, and mowed around it!....how disgusting!
i would like to see, my post go live!!!

I am in absolute shock, at how overgrown, Bramshott Churchyard is!
The main front part, is ok,...but the newer back part, is a disgrace!
Such a sad state,..and to think, that this is where, me & my family will end up, as with most of the Liphook & Bramshott residents!, infact i have a family member there, and it is so overgrown, inplaces, that you are unable to see quite a few of cremation memorial plaques, because the grass has grown over them,....in some parts, the grass, is at least 2 foot high, and you struggle to pin point headstones!
its obvious, that maybe fellow parishoners, have had a go, in places, to strim the area!,......and if i had the means, i too would, help control the area!
but who is responsible for the upkeep, of the churchyard?
please dont say this is part of the cutbacks?
i would love to hear your thoughts,......i am intending on calling the council, and the church tomorrow!
many thanks

As a result of this thread I have this morning visited Bramshott Church and can find to cause for complaint.
The Canadian part is pristine. The remaining area has or is being cut back. It is not an easy or quick job to cut back between head/grave stones of various sizes and shapes.
I don't know who maintains Bramshott but at my church we rely on dedicated volunteers.
I give credit to those who look after Bramshott Church Yard

I think this is the same issue that other people commented on about areas of Liphook. I went for a walk to the church today and grass cutting has been carried out. The war graves area is always kept immaculate so I assume this maintenance is carried out separately.
I live locally and would honestly say that the majority of the time the upkeep of the grounds has been good. It must be extremely labour intensive to strim in between all the graves so budgets would have to be taken into account plus as has been said before - the weather this year has led to a lot of lush growth.
Churchyards are well known for being fantastic areas for wildlife especially due to lack of chemicals and generally not being disturbed, so personally I am happy to see areas left a little wild. Friends of St Mary's have been doing an excellent job of trying to raise funds for the roof. There is a group looking after the sunken lanes in Bramshott. All this work by volunteers. So maybe it needs a volunteer group to enhance the work done by the usual maintenance people during the year.

perhaps in the time it took to boot up your pcs and compose your posts you could have cleared a small patch if you find it so offensive .... i walk through there regulary and think it is an oasis. you see more butterflies there than anywhere else (even with the non summer we have had)

Sandy g
Point taken:.....but i use Bramshott common/Radford park, for the butterflies & wildlife!
I have a recent family member there., and find it distressing, to see her memorial plaque, being buried, by grass, weeds and the likes,....and for your information,..........i have cleared a few spots!
a bit of respect, wouldnt go a miss!,.....if it doesnt interest you, then simply dont comment!

the cemetery interests me hugely as I walk through there regulary and sit a while with my memories of my loved ones who lay there. I am entitled to my opinion ... i don't find it a mess or shocking.... and if I did i would just get on and do something about it. It is a spiritual haven and a beautifully tranquil place to spend time (IMO)

This is a story about four people named Everybody Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it but Nobody realised that Everybody would not do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Everybody could have done.

Anna,
I would rather worry that somebody may get upset if anybody went around cleaning up the graveyard / graves, for example if they were one of the people who thought it looks great the way it is.
I did clear the dried up grass cuttings off of one grave last week, I don't know who cuts the grass (maybe Hampshire county council who have made a pig's ear of the rest of Liphook's grass cutting and left messy cuttings EVERYWHERE).. but the grass cuttings were all over graves, which I think is just abysmal.
There are some really old graves near the steps (near the climbing roses) which really badly need weeding, one of them has some beautiful flowers which were obviously planted years ago and are still blooming, which are now fighting through the weeds, and I would dearly love to pull up all the grass that's drowning them, but.... i'm nobody official, that is somebody's grave, what if their relatives disapproved of the action?
I think this is the problem and some information regarding who is responsible for keeping the place looking respectable (not necessarily manicured, but neat) would be useful. IE - what are they supposed to be doing, and what is actually being done.

I totally agree with S - this was the same thought which occurred to me - indeed, if someone started 'tidying up' my own parents grave there I would be a bit miffed... Having said that, I do think the graveyard looks unloved. The war graves show it up badly. I'm all for wildlife and I wouldn't want it to look too cultivated but there is certainly room for improvement. If someone IS responsible for its upkeep then I would like to who it is - I was never given any information when I started using my plot. And if nobody is responsible for it then I think it's high time they were!

One of the grave diggers informed me this week that he usually has shears with him which he has lent out to people at the churchyard when he has seen them trying to tidy up graves with scissors!
He didn't know who was resonsible for the upkeep of the graveyard but had seen the people out cutting around the Canadian war graves on Thursday.
